The Story Behind the Idea
As I was sitting in my living room, watching the local news with my family, I was listening to another story about a woman being assaulted while running. The trail, on which the woman was attacked, was a trail right by my house and one that I have ran multiple times. I began to wonder if I was safe running in my own neighborhood. Law enforcement advised to run without headphones and to run with a partner. Although the advice was sound, it was not an acceptable solution. I began to think, what if there was a device I could wear on my back that would alert me if someone was approaching from behind, while still allowing me to wear headphones and enjoy my music? This is how Defend Six was born.

Breanna Cleghorn, President and Co-Founder
As a wife and mother to three boys, running is a great way for me to clear my head and keep my health a priority. As I run, I do so while looking over my shoulder, with the fear I may not know when someone is approaching me from behind. Defend Six will give me a sense of security and allow me to continue to enjoy my music while wearing my headphones. Keeping women safe is paramount for me. As I continue through this journey, I would like to use my resources in protecting women around the world. I am hoping, Defend Six will also give me the platform I need to protect and rescue women and young girls who have fallen victim to sex trafficking. My vision for Defend Six goes much further than a running device. I hope to have longevity as an entrepreneur and truly live to make a difference.
Stephanie Abercrombie, Vice President and Public Relations Director
As a wife and mother, making a positive impact on people I meet and the community I live in is a priority in everything I do. I have learned that to offer my best to others, I must nurture my mind, body, and spirit. Doing this equips me to be my best self. I’m passionate about empowering women to reach their full potential and be confident in who they are. When my long-time friend, Breanna, brought the idea of DefendSix to my attention, I knew that the device would be a tool all women could use to grow their physical strength through running, freed from the fear of becoming an unsuspecting victim. Defend Six not only develops products that empower women, we are a company that believes that enabling women to pursue their passions with confidence will lead to positive and long-lasting impacts in the communities in which they live. Earning a B.A. in Public Relations has helped me to develop a skill set that I have passionately devoted to growing and promoting the mission of Defend Six Corporation by helping women everywhere live their best lives.
Derek Doyle, Chief Engineer and Co-Founder
Having earned multiple Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees up through my Ph.D., I’ve spent over a decade innovating technologies that improve situational awareness through embedded sensing systems and applied electromagnetics. I came to the team through my friendship with Breanna, and helped prove out her vision by developing our flagship product, DefendSix. My passion to improve lives motivates me to innovate groundbreaking technologies that deliver a wide range of new capabilities. Not much of a runner, I love that DefendSix can be used as a warning system in so many ways—like monitoring through a closed office door for when the boss is approaching and one might be napping!
Pat Brown, Business Development
In 1985, at age 21, I founded NebArk Courier, Inc. Over the course of 15 years, the company grew to be the largest independent freight company in New Mexico before being sold in 2000. Having ownership and interest in various ventures from retail to financial services, investing, advising and growing startups is a passion. It is important that the Defend Six device makes it to market and I am honored to be involved.
