Jalopy is a sci fi film made by students who are passionate filmmakers seeking to make something entertaining.
It is our goal to recapture the essence and feel of classic sci fi films such as Star Wars, Alien, Forbidden Planet, and Star Trek. To do this we plan on filming models and building sets as well as shoot on 35mm film.
We are not making this film for ourselves but for you and it is our intention to create something entertaining and prove that classic special effects and film formats are anything but out of date.
So what's it about?
Dustin and his wife decide to do something special for their honeymoon. Go to another world.
While in suspended animation aboard an Inert Space lines ship to the tropical paradise planet of Bellicose Dustin finds himself awakened prematurely. 30 years too early in fact. To make matters worse the ship is losing power at an alarming rate. In another week the ship will be powerless, and that's a bad thing to happen while in space.
Kate a scavenger and pirate who has taken a fancy to robbing ships with crew in suspended animation, boards Dustin's ship.
Kate must choose to sacrifice her own ship along with her treasures in order to save Dustin's ship or simply rob it and leave as she's always done.
Who's Making this?
Here's some of my work:
I'm Daniel Kautz a film student at San Francisco State and I decided to do something different for my thesis project.
So why am I qualified? Good question, here are several reasons. I have worked on five feature films as well as several student thesis films in the past. I have earned several awards as well as my Boyscout rank of Eagle for a Historical documentary I made about my home town of Newark while I was in High school.
My interest in the film making business was peaked when I was allowed to play the commercial tapes at the local television network when I was in 6th grade.
I'm a sci fi fan, enjoy comedy, action, and things that are awesome. While I like a good explosion like anyone else I believe as most do that the focus of the story should always be characters. With this film I hope to fulfill my desire I've always had to make a sci fi film and even more importantly, fulfill my desire to tell a fun and entertaining story.
We are a group of filmmakers who want to do something different. It has always been a dream of mine to shoot a sci fi as has it been to film a movie on 35mm film. While the digital age has brought a wealth of tools to film making it has caused many filmmakers to forsake older methods that are just as relevant to movie making today.
If you support this film not only will you help ambitious filmmakers but you'll be supporting a project that intends to raise awareness and showcase the strengths of classic film making methods that are being abandoned by Hollywood today.
How can you help?
Money is always nice but even more important is spreading the knowledge of this project.
Tweet, Comment, Share on Facebook. Any method of spreading us to your friends through social media is appreciated and helpful.
Risks and challenges
The first and most challenging goal is that of constructing sets. Unlike in the kickstarter video above we plan to build our locations rather than create them on computer. This is an area we can use your support because constructing sets is neither cheap nor easy.
We already have a team that has experience building sets, we simply need more help getting the funds to allow them to do their work.
As I mentioned earlier we plan to shoot this movie on 35mm film stock. We have already secured the 35mm film camera and have purchased the film stock. We just need help getting the money we will need to develop the film.
Another major expense will be gear rental such as lights and camera lenses. Now we can do this on our own and have done so before but your money will make it much easier not to mention less stressful since we will not be paying for equipment out of our pockets.
Please show us your support and support filmmakers who want to make films not the easy way but the right way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
