A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
If you spend any time on the water, your equipment is not complete without a safety whistle.
Most of us have been playing with whistles since we were little kids. Strutting about and blasting away in high pitched squeals that annoyed our parents to no end. The whistle is an incredible invention. It’s a small handheld device that turns your exhale into a piercing tone.
It doesn’t scream words. It doesn’t emit flashing lights, it doesn’t send out radio signals. But if you’re hiking and you hear a loud whistle blasting off-your bow, you know exactly what’s going on. Someone’s in trouble and they need your help.
With a design rich in efficiency, the Captain's Whistle will increase your audible sound levels over distances not achievable with voice, cutting through any background noise, or weather. The beautiful opening in the body reduces the amount of exhalation effort required to generate an audible whistle signal.
When blown, your breath is concentrated and forced to rush out through a narrow opening in the Captain's Whistle's entrance. The flow of air at the center of this air stream is significantly faster than the still standing exterior air close to the main stream. If the still standing exterior air stream is easily deflected, vortexes are generated. As this happens repeatedly, many more vortexes with similar properties are generated. These vortexes cause air pressure to vary in a cyclical, periodic, way, which produces a sound wave. The audible frequency of this sound wave is related to the rate at which the vortexes are shed. Since the process is rather chaotic, many different rates or frequencies are produced at a time, which has the pleasant effect of producing the rich tone, and highly audible signature of the whistle.
As you can see in the video, the air stream is divided into two parts. One part coming out of the opening and the other part stays inside the whistle cavity. Any sound wave trapped inside will interfere with each other. If the frequency of sound doesn't match any of the resonant frequencies of the chamber, the waves will interfere destructively and vanish quickly. However, if a frequency matches the resonant frequency of the cavity, as they do in our finely tuned Captain's Whistle, the wave's amplitude will increase. The rate of increase will decrease as the amplitude builds up until the sound wave reaches a steady state. At this point, the amplitude of a sound wave is strong enough that the sound becomes very audible. The sound wave comes out of the hole, get dispersed strongly, and loudly reaches our ears.
The Captain's whistle is tuned to 3150 Hz. This 3150 Hz tone is recommended by U.S. rescue services as the optimum tone to be heard over crowds, machinery, through glass or on the water.
The versatility of the Bow-Shackle made it an indispensable tool on the seas, and it continues to impress today. Although the brass Bow-Shackle is the statement piece of the Captain's Whistle we have made it available exclusively through this Kickstarter campaign as a gift for backers at our $10 tier. Creativity is your only boundary when putting the Bow-Shackle to use.
We have taken our inspiration—the Bow-Shackle—and transformed it along with our products into our own signature hardware. To do this, we had to learn a little bit of just about everything from boat building, design, and engineering to metal machining. Our signature shackles are found in each style of our whistles, Signature Bow Shackle key fob, and other products.
With our design roots in Boston, our company draws creative inspiration from the hub of America’s rich nautical history.
The nautically-inspired Captain's Whistle harkens back to a time of adventure on open seas, its durability a testament to the harsh demands of that bygone era.
Our hardware is tied to the art and science of sailing and exploration. We’ve spent months refining the Captain's Whistle into its final, perfectly balanced harmonic form.
The Captain's Whistle has been manufactured to thrive over decades of use. What was once a labor of love, is now a timeless safety instrument available for all, but we need your help to make this dream a reality.
Our products are steeply discounted off retail prices because we want to reward our very first customers. At $50 for our Backers, the opportunity to purchase a functionally tuned whistle of this magnitude is rare. With our solid brass, our finishing assembly, our master craftsmanship, the Captain's Whistle with your help shall be accessible to all.
Inspired by nautical-grade hardware, The Captain's Whistle is Oceanus's signature safety good. Its unique design, rich color, and practical beauty are perfect for everyday use, travel, or adventure.
We stand behind the quality of our tools and the uniqueness and complexity of our signature hardware. Slender cut from a solid bar of brass, The Captain's Whistle's slim profile makes it both attractive and practical.
We are planning the manufacturing run to be:
Length of Whistle (Without Shackle): 50mm Width of Whistle (Without Shackle): 10mm Body Wall Thickness of Whistle: 1mm Weight: 24 grams (0.85oz)
*Bow-Shackle Dimensions* Width of Whistle (With Shackle): 19mm Width of Whistle at Bow Shackle Attachment: 9mm Width of Bow Shackle opening: 9mm
We launched Oceanus Brass because we wanted to share our nautically inspired hardware with the world and turn an idea into action. A project that was both challenging and rewarding, the Oceanus Captain's Whistle is something we are very proud to share with you. We hope that you will never need to use it, but if you do, we will feel confident knowing that our whistle will be grasped firmly in your hands. We also hope to encourage others to try their hand at something new just as we did, to build something of their own, to go through that exploration process of learning and bringing inspiration to fruition. We owe a great debt of gratitude to the many relationships we’ve built along the way with industrial designers and manufacturers who helped us push the boundaries of what we were told was possible. Countless times we heard, “Nobody does this anymore,” “Use cheaper materials,” “Too many small, mechanical pieces,” and so on. Nevertheless, we stayed the course.
The solid brass construction is nearly indestructible, so for the cost of pen ink refill every couple of years, this pen will likely last forever.
These are targeted milestones for us to hit as a community. If we do hit these goals, each and every backer benefits! We'll send out the item from the corresponding tier with each Captain's Whistle, depending on where we finish. Below is the breakdown of stretch goals:
$15k -- We will start manufacturing the whistle before the campaign ends, which will move the shipping date up by at least two weeks!
$25k -- In addition to the $15K goal, we will work with an external audiologist to increase DB by an additional 10DB!
$50k -- In addition to the $15K and $25K goal, we will also offer a "tinned" variant to give a silver color less prone to discoloration!
As always, a huge thanks to our amazing (and growing) backer base!
Risks and challenges
For once, there are really limited risks here. This is a classic tool, which has already been mostly developed across the ages. Remember, we built this whistle for our own use first and only then offered it to backers like you through this Kickstarter Campaign. For our partnered manufacturers, the classic captain's whistle may be the simplest product they have ever worked on, which will allow everyone to focus on build quality.
We are confident and passionate about delivering quality goods. We have spent months designing and prototyping our products, executing pre-production runs to ensure we can meet our high standard. We have internally funded the design and production of our signature brass hardware. Our resources and team are based here in the United States, primarily on the East Coast, so we do not foresee any issues with our ability to deliver your new Oceanus Brass Captain's whistle upon successful funding of our project.
We will keep you up-to-date on the progress of production and let you know of any issues impacting our ability to promptly deliver your new Oceanus products, including steps we are taking to get back on track. We will do our best to manufacture locally as we have done to date, but may shift focus onto manufacturing overseas if doing so will result in delay avoidance or quality consistency. We stand ready to resolve any challenges to make sure you have a positive experience with our service and product!
Ahoy! Welcome to the Oceanus Brass team. With this Fleet Pack, you will be able to outfit your entire crew with a whistle for both safety and statement. Promote our distinct hardware in your community while identifying with your respect for the sea.
