In the months since releasing our second EP Individuation, Blizzard at Sea has been busy!
As much as we value and love playing live shows, we have all but given them up recently in an effort to focus more on creative writing for another album. And as frustrating, challenging, and disheartening as it was at times, we have managed to pull together a hefty slab of new material to compile into Blizzard at Sea's debut full length album, which will be called Certain Structures.
In the past, we have made a point of pushing the boundaries of genre and of expanding our range of sound, and this time is no different. What we have come up with for Certain Structures is approximately an hours worth of more diverse, passionate, and matured sounds than our previous releases, and we can honestly say we are more excited about these songs than we've ever been!
While Certain Structures will retain significant elements of what has defined Blizzard at Sea's sound in the past, new doors have been opened, and what we have planned will have a wide range, traveling from a crushing wall of sound to quiet meditations. As always, we have a heavily progressive and experimental attitude towards our music, and as excited as we are about this upcoming full length, we know you will not be disappointed!
Our goal is modest because we have attempted to ask for the minimum amount needed to get us to the recording studio. We aren't in this for the money, just head over to our bandcamp page (http://www.blizzardatsea.bandcamp.com) and you will see that our music is (and always will be) a pay-what-you-want download. We are here to make and spread this music and art with the incredible tools that we have available to us, and if we did have the means to do so, we wouldn't have to be asking for your help. But the fact is that we have already put more than we can afford into this band (including flying bass player Jesse Cohen half-way around the world from Abu Dhabi to record!), so crowd-funding is our best option now to keep this music going!
Risks and challenges
Here's the deal, Blizzard at Sea has always looked towards the future, be it in songwriting, lyrical themes, or the fate of the music industry itself. We have learned the hard way that physical copies of music is no longer a priority for many people. With that in mind, and considering the substantial cost of pressing physical albums, we have opted to release Certain Structures online only (for now) as a digital download. Doing so will greatly reduce the amount of money that we have to raise, and will lessen the amount that you, the supporters, need to contribute. Now, obviously one of the great things about physical copies of music is the artwork that you get to hold and appreciate, so we will be sure to include high-resolution files of the artwork with the download, and we will definitely press a physical album if we ever have the means.
