About

I'm a writer and editor who’s passionate about true stories — the people and places, the relationships and experiences that write history in a way nothing else can.

I also teach memoir, critiquing and editing thousands of interesting stories. In 1996 my oldest student was born in 1907. She hid in a bomb shelter in England during World War I, trembling in her grandmother’s arms. My students wrote about having ice delivered to kitchen ice boxes, about outhouses and getting indoor plumbing. There were stories about tenement life in the Lower East Side, about ration stamps in the Depression, about surviving World War II. And then the stories started changing. By 2010 people were writing about living on communes in the sixties and being Vietnam draft resisters. The up-close and personal about the first half of the 20th century was disappearing as time passed on and the stories passed on with it, uncounted treasures lost.

I'm a storycatcher — and it was obvious there was a big hole in the net.

I decided to change that, with "100 Years in the Life," a collection of first-person stories that show what thrilled, what frightened, that tell about how it is and how it’s been — stories you’ll never find in history books. I knew the everyday can be out of this world and now I could share it.

The First Book Is Almost Ready!

“100 Years in the Life of an American Girl" captures girlhood through a century. I’ve collected over 50 stories by interview and story submission from around the country about the life and times for girls under 13 in every decade since 1910. The girls are different races and religions, classes and cultural backgrounds. The ten decades get their own chapters, with five or six girls and their first-person stories featured in each one. Short chapter openers show the big developments of every decade and their influence on girls’ lives along with pop culture highlights. I’ll be the publisher, which means no one has to wait two years to see the first book in print — the usual schedule with a traditional publisher — and I won't be constrained by the limits of a publisher's interest in a series.

A Taste!

The 1910s (Chapter 1) Mary Ann chases horse-drawn fire engines in New York City.

The 1920s (Chapter 2) Julia yells into the telephone to reach her aunt on the new long-distance line.

The 1930s (Chapter 3) Helen rides horseback to her one-room school in Montana.

The 1940s (Chapter 4) Saturday matinee double features cost a nickel and in San Francisco Joyce watches them with a lapful of candy.

The 1950s (Chapter 5) Sherry plays Elvis in secret in the bathroom with a guitar and a tube of her dad's Brylcreem.

The 1960s (Chapter 6) Victoria goes to Woodstock at 11 and serves blueberry pancakes to a line of hippies at her family’s camper van.

The 1970s (Chapter 7) Terry is born in Saigon to an American GI and a Vietnamese mother during the Vietnam war. They flee to her dad’s rural Georgia when the war ends, and her mom walks out.

The 1980s (Chapter 8) Amy Lam wants a Cabbage Patch Kid more than anything. Everyone has one. She can fit in and feel American! Years pass before she finally gets one and by now she's ready for a good laugh when her aunt says, "Its name is Ming."

The 1990s (Chapter 9) Computers come to class in third grade, and Brianna learns to type. But she already knows her way around: she plays Putt Putt and a Barbie detective game on the “family computer” at home.

The 2000s (Chapter 10) Aalaa is a student at an Islamic school in Ann Arbor, Michigan on September 11.

You'll find excerpts from each chapter at facebook.com/100yearsinthelife.

What Will This Kickstarter Do?

I need the funds to publish, publicize, and distribute the first book and launch a series that supports itself.

Your support will allow me to devote myself to collecting stories from around the country and produce a set of fascinating, original print and e-books.

I'll be able to hire the professionals I need to help create quality books: a copy editor and proofreader, talented cover and interior designers, and an experienced e-book uploader. Other self-publishing costs include ISBN fees, distributor’s catalogs, a short print run and contributor copies. And I can hire a website designer right away and create the place where lots of people can submit to future books.

The first book will publish in September. The second book, “Snapshots! 100 Years in the Life of a Child,” will be a photo e-book where photos and short captions show life through a century. It will publish this December. Production will start by January 1st on “100 Years in the Life of a Teenage Girl: Coming of Age Stories (1910 - 2010),” and the series will be launched.

Have a Look at What Could Be Ahead. You Can Be a Part of It!

• 100 Years in the Life of an American Girl: True Stories 1910 - 2010

• Snapshots! 100 Years in the Life of a Child 1910 - 2010 [photo e-book]

• 100 Years in the Life of a Teenage Girl: Coming of Age Stories 1910 - 2010

• 100 Years in the Life of an American Woman 1910 - 2010

• 100 Years in the Life of an American Man 1910 - 2010

The series could expand to other countries — “100 Years in the Life of a British Girl 1910 - 2010" — and much more.

My stretch goal: With enough funds for it, I can create audiobooks and cover costs of licensing and production. Fascinating “100 Years in the Life” games are another stretch goal, like a “pop quiz” game where you can test your knowledge and get some pretty interesting surprises about pop culture through a century. (What disastrous event inspired the name for a popular candy created in the 1910s?)

Your support will help prove the everyday can be out of this world.

Here are a few ways you can SPREAD THE WORD

• Email your friends and share the link to this project.

With all of my heart I THANK YOU for your support!

It's the supporters, the people who also believe the stories of our lives and times are inspiring, entertaining, connecting, mind-expanding and sometimes mind-blowing valuable treasures, who have made this happen.

And I'm happy for the chance to give back. The more you contribute to support this series, the more goodies you get — the rewards are cumulative. Pretty awesome. And so are YOU.

Risks and challenges

I sleep and wake this project — and I look forward to doing that for a long time. I know 100 Years in the Life is an important, fascinating, original, and far-reaching series, and I'm driven. I feel more on my game than ever. I love interviewing people and I'm good at it, I’m a devoted storycatcher, and I'm a good editor with a zillion pages of experience. Deadlines have been a part of my life since I started as a magazine editor at 23 — I meet them. Creating books is easy for me. I've put so many into print over the years and I know what’s involved. Self-publishing is new for me, but with the funds to hire the publishing and marketing experts I need I’m confident that the Kickstarter rewards will be fulfilled on time and this project we all believe in will be off to a strong start.
