We are The Sextet, and we’re on the verge of recording our debut EP "In a Natural State!" We see Kickstarter as a home for creative minds and a wonderful platform where people who believe, respect and see the vision, can support an idea and make it a reality. Using Kickstarter, and giving our fans the opportunity to be a part of the process, just feels right.
We want to invite you - YES YOU! - to participate in this milestone event.
The Sextet is a Groove Jazz six-piece based in Portland, OR. If you take 1 3/4 cups of jazz, a tablespoon of funk, a few spritzes of soul, you're getting close to vibe we create. True to our jazz roots, we make music without limits. Our debut album will incorporate elements of a wide range of musical styles; a fan once referred to one of our tunes as "the Ethiopian sounding song.” To us, music is the influence of sounds, in all vibrations and sizes, telling a story or pointing in a direction of imagination.

This album tells two stories.
1. The poetics of musical open-mindedness
Jazz embraces a multitude of perspectives. Each member of The Sextet plays in multiple groups in Portland, in the widest range of genres imaginable – hip-hop, country, pop/rock, bluegrass, etc. Each genre requires something different from the musician. Across genres, we bring an attention to detail and way of listening that blends each member’s voice into a unique whole. The result is a rich blend of styles and influences, each tossing splashes of color onto our jazz canvas.
2. The natural state of Oregon.
This album was inspired by one of the most incredible places on the planet. Oregon is a breathtakingly beautiful state. Its diverse landscapes span snow-capped mountains, cool dry deserts, the eerie and majestic Pacific ocean, the forests of bountiful Doug Firs. A natural consequence of this environment is self-reflection and growth of the soul. We channeled this inner and outer beauty into the music, and we offer it back up to you.
This music is very important to us. It is the vessel through which we can express the deepest aspects of ourselves, which inevitably becomes the deepest aspects of all of us. Your contribution is a statement that you value the process of self-discovery inherent in jazz. With your help, we can share that which moves us, and hopefully you'll be moved by (and move to) our debut EP.
When Robert Castillo graduated from North Central College two years ago, he moved from his native Kansas City to Portland. He quickly fell in love with the beauty of the environment and the creativity of the culture. He decided to form a jazz group, and in less than a year, a vital core group had formed, and The Sextet started gigging around Portland. A year later, Kansas City is calling him home. This chapter of their collaboration is winding down. Your contribution will allow The Sextet to pay respects to each other, to this time together, and to the music they created as an ensemble. The album we create together will be a testament to this phase in their collective growth, and to the idea that we all grow together in creativity.
We're very happy to be offering so many rewards for contributing. You can score a physical copy of the EP, music theory lessons, your own original tune written by Robert, or an original work of art, and/or a private concert.
For those who contribute $80, our very own bassist-turned-artist Robert Castillo will create a unique drawing just for you! Using pen and paper, Robert likes to play with lines and curves to create abstractions that reveal themselves upon close inspection. Take a look!
"It takes a village..." to get an EP created. From the composition of the tunes, to the musicians rehearsing, the sound engineer and mastering, to the final production of the physical product. All of these various aspects require money. With your help, we'll raise enough funds to immortalize our current sound and have it available for the world to hear.
Peace and thank you!

Risks and challenges
We've been blessed to have the help of some incredible graphic designers and video producers. Extra money we receive will be allotted to compensating them for their time and effort.
Also in the budget, we've allotted enough funds for 100 physical copies of the EP. Hopefully that's enough! If not, we'll use money raised over our goal to order more physical copies!
