About this project
We are a startup from Denmark that introduces edible insects to the general public. Since August 2016, we have been developing a delicious juice shot where the main source of nutrition is derived from sustainably farmed crickets. Today, we are ready to launch our first insect powered product: FEMTEN Fårekyllinger!
FEMTEN Fårekyllinger (or FIFTEEN Crickets in English) is a delicious apple-ginger shot enriched with crickets. Every bottle contains the equivalent of, well, fifteen crickets!
One bottle (150mL) will cover 50% of your daily need for vitamin B12, which is essential for integrating protein in the body.
Our juice is made with purely natural ingredients: apple, ginger, lemon and crickets. Nothing else. With FEMTEN Fårekyllinger you get a unique umami-flavored beverage, adding a new dimension to the culinary experience.
Unlike traditional livestock, insects require a minimum of water, feed and space. They are a sustainable, healthy and tasty alternative to traditional sources of nutrition. Our mission is to kickstart a sustainable food revolution by freeing the potential of edible insects.
Therefore, Insekt KBH actively engages in a circuit of symbiotic urban farms. We call it: The Urban Ecosystem
Within The Urban Ecosystem, we collaborate closely with co-actors in order to redefine what constitutes a 'resource'. For instance, we donate our leftover fruit pulp as organic feed to the local cricket farm, Bugging Denmark. In turn, the cricket rearing at Bugging Denmark empowers all other sorts of valuable networks.
We do not regard edible insects solely as a business. We want to provide a solution to over-consumption and food waste. In our view, edible insects form part of a green movement towards a better world.
Insects are extremely healthy and nutritious. Crickets, for instance, consist of 70% protein, contain a wide range of B-vitamins (including loads of B12), all essential amino acids, Omega 3, zink, iron, magnesium - and many other minerals. It is nature’s own multivitamin.
Crickets have a subtle and nutty flavor and are packed with umami. Umami is one of the five basic tastes (together with sweetness, sourness, bitterness and saltiness) and is best described as a lingering savory flavor that binds other flavors together. The sensation of umami stems from the detection of protein and it enhances the taste of a wide variety of foods, including juice.
Insects also consume fewer resources and emit less greenhouse gas than traditional livestock. Indeed, insects can be produced with almost no environmental footprint whatsoever. If we can alter the behavior of consumers in favor of edible insects, we can ultimately release immense supplies of food and reclaim agricultural land that has previously been dedicated to livestock rearing or feed supplies.

The Insekt KBH team is a passionate and well-balanced collection of believers and lunatics, all striving towards turning a quirky idea into a cultural accepted phenomenon. And we love crickets. We hope you will too!
The story of Insekt KBH begins with the first meeting between Philip & Jakob, who stumbled into each other at a cocktail event with insects – what else?
Before that, each had been tumbling with his own idea of 'doing something' with edible insects. In Philip’s case, it all began with a case of beer and a blurry brainstorming session with a close friend. In Jakob’s case, the idea had already manifested itself as a physical entity: he owned his very own urban cricket farm!
Despite their very different backgrounds – Jakob has a Post.Doc in science and Philip is a business student – they immediately clicked. During the course of the following months, friends and families were exposed to all sorts of curious insects and funky experiments such as worm pate, cricket pesto and beetle liquor. The receptions were mixed – to put it mildly...
Soon after, however, the idea of a cricket powered juice came to life. Suddenly, it wasn’t so crazy anymore! Indeed, after the very first sip of a home brewed apple-ginger juice with crickets, they realized how well the crickets balanced the taste in the drink. Since then, the recipe has barely been altered.
Today, it seems that everything is coming together as more and more people grow interested in the product and the cause.
Now we are here!
And that's not all! Our awesome T-shirts are made from 100% organic cotton produced in collaboration with Makershirt. Through creativity, quality as well as social and environmental responsibility, Makershirt is aiming to change the way people buy and use textiles.
We will highly appreciate all support and will do our best to make you proud as our backer. THANK YOU!
Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
A huge thanks to Julie Ølgaard, Mikkel Brøndum & Christian Houge Laursen for the movie production; Martin Keller & Carsten Lind for the music; the insect dancers from Dansekapellet; Jesper Huyk for his artwork; and not least all our friends and volunteers!
Risks and challenges
We've tried our best to mitigate any potential issues that may arise throughout the process. Thus preparations for production are well under way so backers won't have to wait long for their rewards.
When we have reached our funding goal we'll get straight to full scale production of FEMTEN Fårekyllinger and shipping. However, as this will be the first big production, some hurdles are inevitable, e.g. longer international shipping times. Nonetheless, we have tried our best to calculate for potential delays in the shipment date.
Most importantly, we are committed to transparency and open communication. Our backers will be the first to know if any issues arise that may affect our delivery timelines.
This is our timeline:
* August 2016 - January 2017: Developing and testing our product. Selling at various events.
* February: Production of a first batch.
* April: Kickstarter campaign begins.
* April: Developing the recipe of a new flavor.
* May: Kickstarter campaign ends.
* June: Full production of the first FEMTEN Fårekyllinger batch as well as the new flavor batch.
* July: Shipment of rewards to Kickstarter pledgers.
