The Gentleman's Guide to League of Legends:
A comprehensive tool to help you understand the game and climb the ladder!
I am Gentleman Gustaf, and I want to teach you to be a better gamer. For the last two years I have been deeply involved in the League of Legends theorycrafting community. I recently hit Diamond 1, and want to bring my expertise (both theoretical and practical) to bear on a project I've wanted to undertake for a long time. Inspired by Day9, a supportive and educational video blogger from the Starcraft 2 world, I want to analyze high level games, stream interactively, produce informative articles and guides, and coach players to higher skill levels.
Most importantly, I want to centralize all of this information on one website. Ultimately, the site will be dedicated to providing a window into high level League of Legends play, and how to recreate it for yourself.
If this Kickstarter is successful, I will be upping the quality on all of my work -- starting with the website! -- and producing consistent content for 4 months. I will be creating at least 5 pieces of League of Legends content per week, and over 80 posts by the end of the project!
On top of that, there will be at least 3 hours of unscripted content (streamed solo queue, 5s, or coaching) per day, for 240+ hours of streamed League of Legends play. Finally, I will be introducing additional projects according to my week-to-week interests. Over a 4 month period, this will sum to over 10 continuous days of League of Legends content.
What exactly will I be creating?
Articles - I will continue writing high quality articles on mathcrafting, tier lists, theorycrafting, and life as a gamer. But I will be upgrading my editing and modeling software, for cleaner and more interactive infographics.
Guides - I already write in-depth guides for all champions I love. However, I want to devote time to learning other champions to write guides on them, as well as bring in other high-Elo players for collaboration.
Tier Lists - I will release tier lists for junglers, and collaborate with other high-Elo players to create comprehensive tier lists for all positions.
Vlogs - I have done scripted videos in the past. However, I will produce a series of semi-scripted LoL related video shows, an hour in length, on a predetermined topic. The topics will be varied but dedicated to improving as a gamer, with specific tie-ins to League of Legends. What is a semi-scripted video? A basic train of thought, but influenced by viewer feedback and commentary.
Casted Games and Tournaments - I will cast high-Elo or tournament games. From a viewer perspective, this gives you the potential to see what League of Legends looks like on the fly. But from a learner perspective, this will be aimed at highlighting what exactly it is that a high-level player sees in the flow of a game.
Replays - Casting is nice, but sometimes it takes a premeditated analysis to truly understand a game. I will dig deep into the choices a team makes and explain how everything from champion select to their level 1 setup was aimed at their team's strengths, while exploiting their opponent's weaknesses.
The focus will be on videos, articles, and guides, with at least one of each per week. As well, I will be publishing a tier list every other week. Once LCS starts again, I will be casting a game or reviewing a replay at least once a week. Again, I will be producing 5 pieces of content per week.
On top of that, I will host a high-quality stream about which you can always say 'I really learned from watching that'.
What does your funding do?
As much as I wish I could simply start this project on my own, I currently have neither the time or the money to fully upgrade my current work.
The funding will go to the startup costs (hardware/internet upgrades/website maintenance) and allow me to work full-time on the project.
As you can see by looking through my YouTube channel, the video quality is not the greatest. Viewers watching my stream have noted that it occasionally (whenever there is a teamfight) lags, and my video editing seems done more by machete than scalpel. Anything above my target could go towards getting guests on the show, coordinating with Riot, streaming tournaments, and more! Without advertising, I currently pull in 20k viewers per post. Between advertising and coaching, I could easily support my maintenance fees going forward.
November 25 2013: Kickstarter ends, upgrades begin; they will roll in over time, but should be done by January 2014.
November 31 2013: 24 hours of streaming, including League of Legends, SCP: Containment Breach stream, my thoughts on competitive balance, and more!
December 1 2013 - March 31 2014: 4 months of content, 5 days a week. Promotionals (viewer games, coaching, et al.) begin on a first-come first-scheduled basis.
April 1 2014: This is not the end, but the beginning. Content will continue with improvements.
General rules - Many of the rewards allow you a choice. Keep in mind that many of my followers are under 18, so keep it minor-friendly. For the children. On top of that, keep it classy.
Preparation - Many of the rewards will take up to a month to create. However, in the event that many backers are at that level, they will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. That is, I will only be publishing a max of 5 articles a week, so 20 article requests will require at least a month to get to.
Unranked Tier: $1 - Can I have my division listed?
At the Round Table of Gentlemen, all sponsors are equal, regardless of class, gender, race, or league.
Bronze Tier: $5 - Shout out?
I will literally shout "THAT WAS FOR ______, TEEMO!" Of course, your name isn't "______", so you'll have to tell me your name (real or summoner). If you'd prefer a different champion, just tell me.
Silver Tier: $10 - But Gentleman Gustaf, my match history is perfect!
Then you'll get the satisfaction of me telling you how perfect your match history is.
Gold Tier: $15 - Elaborate?
Four posts per month will go up at least one week early, with password-only access. All backers at this level will get the password. Currently, I'm planning on prioritizing Tier Lists for early-access content, so that subscribers can stay ahead of their opponents on the ladder.
Platinum Tier: $20 - How many games?
At least 3 hours per week, with as many of you as possible!
Diamond Tier: $25 - Just how are you going to get your picture taken with Skarner?
I'm resourceful when it comes to networking! Here's a picture of me with my buddy Gentleman Cho'Gath!
He took a bite out of my side as you can see, so hopefully the Skarner photoshoot will be less dangerous.
Challenger Tier: $30 - Bring it, Gentleman Gustaf!
Oh, I shall.
Chat Buddy: $40 - What if I want more than the one hour?
See the add-ons section below rewards!
Scholar: $40 - I don't want coaching, I just want to talk to you!
Then I suggest Chat Buddy!
Consultant $50/$75 - Any topical restrictions?
I'll talk with you personally to negotiate a topic, but as long as it's relevant to League of Legends and remotely viable (no AP Darius), you should be in the clear.
Sponsor: $100 - What qualifies as a logo?
Any small image (or even a short slogan) you want me to advertise.
Gentleman-in-Training Tier: $125 - What does that mean?
I'll watch the game, providing analysis on the game itself, and feedback for you to improve! Then I'll post it on my website.
Creative Adviser: $150 - Anything? No restrictions at all?
I'll be publishing it on my website dedicated to you, so again, keep it classy.
Gentleman: $200 - But you never Duo Queue!
That's how much I appreciate your support! Caveat: you have to agree to not be toxic towards the other players in our game.
Game Analyst: $250 - Any game? Why only computer games?
As long as I can get easy access to it. I don't own any consoles, so console games are harder for me to get a hold of.
Rockstar: $500 - Do you have any musical talent?
I used to sing choir/a Capella many years ago! Many, many years ago. Doesn't that make it more fun?
If you choose any add-ons, include the details in the comments of your pledge.
Coaching - You can add an hour of coaching (or again, if you don't want coaching, we can just chat) for $40, just add $40 to your pledge after choosing your tier list. For another 5 hours of coaching, add $180 (saving $20), and for 10 hours, add $350 (saving $50)! Mention this in the comment when you back the project, for clarity.
Logos - You can add a logo to any Champion Tier pledge simply by adding $100 to that pledge.
Other Combinations - If you want to combine other pledges (for example, Consultant and Scholar), pm me.
Completion and Stretch Goals
I have big plans for this site, and this is just the tip of the iceberg.
First, if we do hit the goal, I'll be celebrating with a full playthrough of the updated SCP: Containment Breach, a horror game that I streamed a much earlier version of.
You'll get to watch me whimper, giggle, and cry my way through the game.
With each stretch goal we reach above the base goal of $4000, I'll be able to add on to my plans right away! I won't add ALL of the stretch goals here; you'll have to unlock them over time!
5000 - I will visit Riot Gaming and conduct interviews with as many champion design and balance people as I can. Priorities: Iron Stylus, Phreak, Morello, Xypherous.
6000 - I will cosplay in the outfits of the following skins, doing a brief photo shoot and spending one day streaming as each of them:
Mafia Miss Fortune
Other stretch goals will be revealed if we make it this far!
I started with a small Youtube channel dedicated to creating videos about self-improvement in League of Legends. However, I was soon vaulted into prominence by A Different View, the long-standing mathcrafting hub run by DiffTheEnder and supported by Vvinrar, and have written for Reign of Gaming since, maintaining a column focused on mathcrafting and general theory. I enjoyed this niche, predicting such strategies as double attack speed items on Vayne, the nerf to Corki's passive to ignore crits, and the addition of CDR to Ancient Golem, as well as calling support Annie almost a season in advance.
However, there was one problem: I was in Silver to start, and only barely made Gold in time for the end of Season 2. At first it didn't bother me, but I started to notice the same comments on every article: you're not even Diamond, why should we listen to you? So in late July, I took a week off from everything, even work, and did nothing but ladder. In one week, I was in Plat I from Gold V. A friend of mine who had been starting a team saw potential in me, and offered me a spot on his team of all Diamond players. We played as a five together, hitting Platinum I rather quickly before he was pulled away from us for another team.
At that point, I looked at where I was, a Plat III jungler (I'd suffered some Elo decay) on a team of Diamond players, and indubitably the weak link, and tried another experiment. I was going to take a month off from everything. I had the savings to do it (barely), and the time, and the job I'd been about to take was delayed for the government shutdown anyway. I thought I'd be able to hit Diamond I by the end of the month, and I'd make a push for Challenger next season. Instead, I was Diamond I in 10 days.
From there, I was at a crossroads. While I toyed with the idea of spending the next 5 months training and trying to prepare a team for Challenger Tier, the idea seemed too risky as a straight up career path.
So while I still ladder in my free time, my focus has shifted to teaching, something with which I am very familiar. I've been a tutor for the last 10 years of my life, and designed tests for the government. Had I had the money, I'd have gone to grad school and become a professor. But now I find myself in possession of new skills, and eager to share them.
And that brings us to the present day, with me wanting to help the League of Legends community improve! But I can't do it alone; I need your help.
Risks and challenges
Once the project is funded, it should be mostly clear sailing. The first month will be a bit rocky as all of the upgrades roll out, but once everything is up and running, the biggest problem I see is getting the right guests to come on the show.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
