I am seeking funds to serve as an "advance" so I can do research for my book.
Since I have my publisher in place, I can begin gathering images and interviews on a "road trip" from southern Connecticut to northern Maine. I will visit Coast Guard stations along the famed craggy coast, and interview many of the old salts who have made this a fearless and beloved service.
This book is timely, because I recently finished a book that touched on the Coast Guard's history. It is "Nautical Newburyport: A History of Captains, Clipper Ships and the Coast Guard." It has sold well. This will dig deeper into the service's heroic lore.
After the book is published, I plan to travel throughout New England to offer a lecture-with-slides. People will get to see the results of my research.
I have already received a taste for the popularity of the subject. On a recent Facebook post (www.facebook.com/authordykehendrickson) of a 270-foot vessel back from a drug interdiction voyage, I quickly received 725 "likes" and 126 "shares."
My home town of Newburyport is the birthplace of the Coast Guard (1790), so I have a built-in support system with many readily available resources. Also, many former Coasties have retired here.
And Newburyport has been designated a Coast Guard City by national brass in Washington.
The book will be 160 pages, with 45 photos. Some will be taken by me, and others will be from the Coast Guard itself. Public affairs officers in Boston have pledged full support.

Risks and challenges
Your investment is protected because I already have a contract with a publisher, History Press of Charleston, S.C. So the book definitely will be published and distributed.
I am an experienced journalist and previously published author (four books). I know the ins and outs of undertaking this project, which eliminates any risk of spinning my wheels.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
