About

Note : All release estimate in the rewards are when we are estimating a release into Early Access.

We’ve been working super hard to provide a little demo for you to try Little Legacy for yourself. It’s been difficult for us, trying to find a good ‘cut off’ point (how do you show off a small slice of a procedurally generated, near infinite world?).

So, we’ve given you a version of the game as it stands. It’s got a load of the basic systems in place, a couple of spells to throw around, some fancy garms to impress the townsfolk, and a whole heap of potential!

Hopefully the demo will give you a good idea of the direction we’re heading, the kind of ‘feel’ we’re aiming for - and most of all, a good impression!

That said, the systems that are in the game, still have a massive way to go before we’re happy with them. This is just a little slice! :)

Quick note : We've had some feedback about the combat - we just want to make it very apparent that the combat is super super early on - it is definitely not representative of how it'll be in the final version!

LITTLE LEGACY FOR MAC (CLICK ME!)

LITTLE LEGACY FOR WINDOWS (CLICK ME!)

Okay, so now you’re (hopefully!) thinking, ‘well it sure does look great, but what’s the gameplay like?’.

Well..

  • Near Infinite Worlds - Last we checked, it'd take you somewhere around 600 years to walk halfway across the map. I mean, don't hold us to this because we don't have that much time to test it! You get the idea though - you're not gonna run out of space to play.
  • Persistent Worlds - Okay, you've made a character, done some adventuring, but Mr Man isn't living up to your expectations. You've made him stupid but lucky, and are starting to realise only being able to shout at everyone isn't how you wanted to play the game. So, you start a new character - and whilst you're playing as him, your old character will still exist in the world. He won't be off slaying gods or adventuring too hard, but he'll be there. And if you find it appropriate to sacrifice him, well, that's your call.
  • Magical Worlds - The worlds you create in Little Legacy have been sprinkled with a rather generous serving of fairy dust. Magic plays a huge part of the gameplay in Little Legacy. The flora you encounter in the wild might have it's own magical properties, and you should feel free to abuse that how you see fit. Found a tree which increases the fertility of all the plants around it? Why not cut it down, grow some more, and start churning out potatoes so fast that... you have too many potatoes to deal with.
  • Destructible Environment - Everything in Little Legacy has a health value - and we all know the old saying "that which has a health value can be needlessly destroyed". Or something, we might be paraphrasing. The point we're trying to get at, is that there are no limitations. If someone in town has been a little rude to you, you have the power to obliterate them, their families, their house and even the town itself if you see fit (we'd do the same, don't worry).
  • Towns - The thing with a lot of procedurally generated games, is that after a while it can begin to feel quite lonely. You're out in the wilderness on your own, scraping by to survive. So, we've done a bit of smarty pants coding behind the scenes, and thrown in a load of people and towns for you to play with. You'll be able to buy a house (if building one isn't your thing), settle in and potentially make some friends. Do a bit of trading, maybe give a couple of gifts. If you're nice enough, maybe some of the townsfolk would be up for adventuring with you!
  • Gods - The worlds you create in Little Legacy will have their own history, and their own gods who inhabit them. The gods in Legacy are those ‘pesky interfering’ types you hear about in stories. Not all of them are bad, and not all of them are good - but all of them will have an impact on the game. The gods are immensely powerful people who exist in the game. They are not just legend, and they are not immortal. Godhood could be yours if you’re able to harness the power and skill required to kill one - but if you fail..
  • Crafting - We’ve designed the crafting to take advantage of all the magical effects and properties that you might find in the world. If you manage to find a funky tree which has healing properties, that property will be applied to anything you create from it. Think houses that heal themselves, think artsy handmade wooden armour that’s slowly filling your health back up, think magical everything!
  • Live how you want - We’ve tried to create Little Legacy to be as non-linear as possible. There’s no over arching story, no scripted sequences and nothing you ‘have to do’. It’s an open world, full of possibility; it’s up to you what you decide. Live as a nomad, a farmer, a mayor, a warrior, a god, or anything in between. You decide.
  • Monsters - There’s a heap of monsters and beasts we want to stuff the world full of. You’ll be getting all of your usual fantasy creatures, and a whole load of particularly interesting ones straight from our imaginations. They will all fit seamlessly in with the world (imagine a giant stomping through a town, bulldozing everything as it stumbles through someone’s house). Each different lifeform will have it’s own influence on how you progress in the world. Bigger, badder enemies will drop better loot. Softer, squishy enemies will be good for farming and resource collection. You'll be able to craft items that can give you specific, powerful advantages; how about crafting a skull helmet so that Skeletons aren't aggressive?
  • Magic - Magic plays a huge part in Little Legacy. There’s magic for everything. We’ve got magic that goes in the environment (to make the areas more unique and exciting), magic that goes on items, and magic that you can cast at will! The magic isn’t all combat focused - it’s about the world too. Crops taking too long to grow? Cast a spell that increases fertility around you. Accidentally set your house on fire? Why not summon a rainstorm and douse it (but next time, do try to be more careful). Magic is also extremely powerful - eventually allowing you to obliterate towns, people, enemies and gods. Everything in the game can be destroyed, and we want to give you tons of ways to do it.
  • Your character - Your character in the game isn’t just a slightly chubby, average looking person you tell to move around. Your character is a person, and has things they’re good and bad at. When you create your character, you’ll be able to change your stats based on how you want to play the game - and these stats will influence what you’re able (and not able) to do. Making yourself super strong might mean that you can break down people’s doors, intimidate them and throw their stuff around. Making yourself super dumb will probably end up with you shouting your own name at people because you’re a little too thick to converse with them.

Vote for us on Steam Greenlight!

The world is composed of lots of different areas called ‘biomes’. Each different biome will look and behave a certain way, and be full of it’s own wildlife. You may have seen similar systems in games before.

We’ve taken it one step further - and made each of these biomes entirely unique. Take a forest biome - it’s grassy, full of oak and pine trees and it has some bushes in it. Okay great - after 3 or 4, you’ve seen them all, and it’s no longer new or exciting.

Our system aims to make biomes of the same type, differ from one another. You might run into 2 forest areas, but one has an abundance of pine trees which are green, and teleport you away when you get too close. The other is an overly dense forest with blue leaves on everything, with barely any room to walk around. Along with this, we’ve given the areas names - to add to the feeling of being in a ‘world’ and not just a ‘place’. Thinking ‘oh that guy lived just outside Clippet Woods’ is far more interesting than ‘umm.. I think his house was left a bit..? By those trees. Definitely’.

And that’s just using the Forest Biome as an example - we have tons that we’d like to put in, ranging from wacky enchanted magical forests, to swamps, to the arctic wasteland.

The towns you’ll encounter in Little Legacy are all procedurally generated - filled with a colourful of different assortment of buildings and people. The building’s you’ll find aren’t just there for pretty decoration, they’ll all be functional. Imagine towns filled with churches / temples, carpenters for all your crafting needs, blacksmiths and hunters. Imagine roaming spell salesman, travelling the world and stopping off at towns to empower the locals. These are the kind of things we’d like to add to the towns.

However, the towns will have their own laws and rules. Whether it be ‘no magic’, ‘no goblins’ or ‘no weapons drawn’, you’ll have to obey (or face a very stern talking to by one of the guards).

If you find a town you like, you’ll be able to buy a little house there (assuming you’ve got the gold to match your taste). You’ll be able to settle in, make some friends, and eventually set fire to the whole thing in ‘some freak accident’ (we won’t tell if you don’t).

Towns will provide safety from the beasts that lurk the wilderness, and some company for you. The services provided by the townspeople are invaluable if they like you, and expensive if they don’t.

People. People are everywhere. They’re like the plague. You’ll find them sheltered up in their homes during the dark hours because ‘the dark is too scary’ and ‘they need sleep’.

Fortunately, some of these people are actually okay. They all have things they like and dislike. Some are going to hate you straight away, others.. Not so much. How much a person likes you will influence how they interact with you. If they own a shop, you might get better prices if they like you.

However - if they don’t like you - it might be worth using their shop anyway. Being a regular customer and spending a lot of money is a surefire way to make someone like you!

All the people in the world can come adventuring with you. So if you’re tired of being on your own - make friends with someone and bring them along too!

Finally, the people are only people. When they die, they die. If you’re powerful enough, it might not be the end of their story, but for the most part.. They’re dead. Be careful with your magic (and temper)!

Background

Okay - time for a bit about us. We’re a team made up of 2 people (Matt & Selwyn). We’ve been working on Little Legacy for around 15 months, entirely in our spare time. Nearly all of our spare time actually.

We’ve been working our day jobs (developing VR software) to pay the bills, and working on Little Legacy until late into the evenings in our rooms!

We’ve been entirely self funded up until this point, and are pretty proud at the progress we’ve made so far.

Matt - 'The right half of the brain'

  • Handles the programming and general game design / development.
  • Has worked on a multitude of different VR projects, giving him a solid experience with lots of areas of game development.
  • Likes chicken, drum and bass, and acting his shoe size.

Selwyn - 'The left half of the brain'

  • Handles making Little Legacy look as pretty as it is, and all other media aspects.
  • Has a wide skillset in different creative areas, including 3D modelling, animation and general design.
  • Likes metal, angrier metal, and spending his pocket money on new crayons.

Coming to Kickstarter to secure funding has been a bit of a big deal for us. We’re making steady progress, but we only have so much time that we can dedicate to it, whilst having other jobs.

The funding will allow us to work on Little Legacy full time, in an actual office, and significantly streamline the development.

We’re also using Kickstarter to create a community of people who want to be involved in the development. We know that early iteration and constant feedback is essential, and at the moment, we’ve been lacking it. Having a community of people who can provide constant feedback for us, will allow us to produce a much more stable, engaging game.

We will also be using the funding to outsource some of the work that falls outside of our area of expertise. The most immediate being the music / soundtrack - neither of us are professional composers (nor do we have the time to be!), and so we would like to make use of some of the many talented composers out there.

If we surpass our funding goal, we would ideally like to bring on extra talent to help speed up the development process.

We’ve come to Kickstarter to tackle three very important obstacles.

First and foremost, we want to be able to fully commit ourselves to the development - being able to support ourselves financially whilst developing the game. Following on from that, we want to maintain creative control over the project.

We’ve dedicated a lot of our time, energy and passion into the development so far. There’s a lot of our skin in the game, and we’d like to keep it that way. We certainly don’t want someone telling us to change the game, or sacrifice it’s quality in order ‘to make more money’. We have a vision for it, and we plan on delivering it.

Finally, Kickstarter allows us to reach a mass audience of people, who not only like games - but help them by supporting them. People who will share our vision of the game, who want to see it succeed and be involved in the development.

We’d be fools not to have come here!

Risks and challenges

Risks :

Little Legacy is a pretty ambitious project - certainly for 2 people. There is a magnitude of work still to be done, but we have tried to remove as much risk from the project before coming to Kickstarter. The vast majority of the underlying systems that could cause problems have been implemented, and because of this, we are absolutely confident in saying we can deliver this project.

There is an element of risk to our schedule, too. As we are only 2 people - any major problems can slow down devleopment quite drastically. We've attemped to combat this already by getting the real tricky stuff out of the way before coming here.

Challenges :

Procedural generation is a tricky thing at the best of times - and as such, comes with it’s own set of challenges which need to be addressed. The majority of the challenges we have faced, and will face are entwined with the procedural generation system. There are nearly always performance concerns when generating content at run time - fortunately, we have an abundance of ideas and optimisations that we can perform to ensure the game runs flawlessly. These optimisations are yet to be implemented as they can take some time - but it is something we will be addressing in the future.

Our last main point would be that we'd like to remain as transparent with our supporters as we can possibly be. If we are having problems, we will endeavour to keep you filled in on the current state (and not just drop off the face of the earth). You've placed your trust in us by supporting us, and we would like to earn yours through the development.
