About the Memoir:
Set in a vinyl floored apartment, the cracking concrete of New York City, with memories of a Dominican Republic during the 1950's, Full of Grace: A Dominican Girl’s Attempted Escape From Womanhood is a memoir that traces the true story of Rosa's and her family's failed attempts at loving. The making of a totalitarian father with a steel guarded vulnerability, and a mother with a stronghold on protecting her three children in a violent household, lead to the crippled tools that Rosa uses to thrust herself into a fragmented world of unveiling sexual exploration, slippery racial landscapes, and relationships that soul-break before they imperfectly bond back shatters of a dangerously callousing heart. The story unfolds in a non-linear, time-weaving collection of memories in vignettes, letters, and short stories, told in a voice that speaks to the self, the reader, and directly to the characters in the text. We follow Rosa through young daughterhood, budding womanhood, and early motherhood through a language infused with poetic craft, recollections in Dominican Spanglish, and a shifting tone, painted with the tremors of failure and uncertainty as well as unexpected hope.
About the Residency:
The money raised will allow me to obtain support from a residency like Vona, and grant me the opportunity to develop pieces for the chapbook version that backers like you will be receiving (and that will be available for sale online). The goal for this summer is to labor in developing a working structure for the memoir and complete several pieces that will fit into that structure. My vision is to enter the final year of my Creative Nonfiction MFA program at Mills College with a thesis ready for thorough revision (as opposed to continuing to mostly write from scratch) while I work full-time and finish the program. The chapbook supporters receive, completed at the end of this residency, will reflect the works in their pre-thesis completion phase. The post-thesis finished product backers receive will include more pieces, and the memoir will have gone through extensive revision.

Risks and challenges
If I am not able to obtain support from the structured residency programs I am applying to, I intend to utilize the funds allotted for this to obtain consistent feedback support from another experienced writer or editor who wholeheartedly believes in the vision for this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
