AUDIOBOOK STRETCH GOALS

Adding audiobook stretch goals on October 12th, with 5 days left to go in the campaign. More stretch goals may be added, this is the first goal, designed to be long enough to make an audiobook of producable size. As with last year, Skyboat Media, headed by Stefan Rudnicki and Gabrielle de Cuir will produce the audiobook if this goal is reached! Audiobook including the following

STRETCH GOAL $11,200

  • "The Women You Didn't See" by Nicola Griffith (a letter from Letters to Tiptree)
  • "Damage" by David D. Levine
  • "Grandmother-nai-Leylit's Cloth of Winds" by Rose Lemberg
  • "The Pauper Prince and the Eucalyptus Jinn" by Usman T. Malik
  • "Our Lady of the Open Road" by Sarah Pinsker
  • "Today I Am Paul" by Martin L. Shoemaker
If this stretch goal approaches, other audiobook stretch goals will be added, to add more stories.

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of the Long List Anthology is to celebrate more of the fiction that was loved by the Hugo Award voting audience.  Every year, besides the well-known final ballot, there is a lesser-known longer list of nominated works.  The purpose of this anthology is to put a bunch these stories in a package to make them easy for readers to find, so you can put them on your bookshelf or load them up on your e-reader. The goal here is to widen that celebration of great fan-loved fiction.

This will be the second volume of the Long List Anthology.  Last year's volume was a huge success, reaching the base goal in a couple days, and the stretch goals for novelettes and novellas not long after, and up into audiobook stretch goals after that.  It has sold close to 10,000 copies, appeared in Amazon's top 100 paid books for a time, and still continues to sell copies steadily almost a year later.

The base funding goal will include the Short Story category only. Stretch goals will expand the anthology to include novelettes , and then novellas.

Ebook copies will be available in EPUB, MOBI, and PDF.

This project is not endorsed by nor affiliated with the Hugo awards, WSFS, WorldCon, or any associated entities. The Hugo name is used with permission.  Please note that the anthology is NOT called "The Hugo Long List Anthology".  It is called "The Long List Anthology", or the full wordy title: "The Long List Anthology: More Stories From the Hugo Award Nomination List".

WHAT STORIES WILL BE IN THE ANTHOLOGY?

(note these are listed in alphabetical order by author name, not in order of table of contents)

Short Stories and Letters (base goal)

  • "Three Cups of Grief, By Starlight" by Aliette de Bodard
  • "Madeleine" by Amal El-Mohtar
  • "Pockets" by Amal El-Mohtar
  • "Tuesdays With Molakesh the Destroyer" by Megan Grey
  • "The Women You Didn't See" by Nicola Griffith (a letter from Letters to Tiptree)
  • "Damage" by David D. Levine
  • "Neat Things" by Seanan McGuire (a letter from Letters To Tiptree)
  • "Today I Am Paul" by Martin L. Shoemaker
  • "Pocosin" by Ursula Vernon
  • "Wooden Feathers" by Ursula Vernon
  • "Hungry Daughters of Starving Mothers" by Alyssa Wong

(Note that this base goal includes all 5 short stories that were nominated for the inaugural Eugie Foster Memorial Award!)

Novelettes (stretch goal at $3900)

  • "The Heart's Filthy Lesson" by Elizabeth Bear
  • "So Much Cooking" by Naomi Kritzer
  • "Another Word For World" by Ann Leckie
  • "Grandmother-nai-Leylit's Cloth of Winds" by Rose Lemberg
  • "The Deepwater Bride" by Tamsyn Muir
  • "Our Lady of the Open Road" by Sarah Pinsker
  • "The Long Goodnight of Violet Wild" by Catherynne M. Valente

Novellas (stretch goal at $5000)

  • "The Pauper Prince and the Eucalyptus Jinn" by Usman T. Malik
  • "The Sorcerer of the Wildeeps" by Kai Ashante Wilson

Note that the stories on the list here are those which have been queried and which have agreed to be in the anthology.  Not all of the stories on the long list can be included because of printing constraints, and not every story is available, so the anthology cannot include everything.

NONFICTION

Last year, the anthology was entirely comprised of fiction. This year we're trying a small change. Letters From Tiptree is one of the works on the longer list of nominated works for the Best Related Work category. The premise as described on the publisher Twelfth Planet's website:

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Alice Sheldon’s birth, and in recognition of the enormous influence of both Tiptree and Sheldon on the field, Twelfth Planet Press is publishing a selection of thoughtful letters written by science fiction and fantasy’s writers, editors, critics and fans to celebrate her, to recognise her work, and maybe in some cases to finish conversations set aside nearly thirty years ago.

Included in the base goal are two of the letters from Letters To Tiptree, written by Seanan McGuire and Nicola Griffith. These are complete works in themselves, but if you like what you read, you might want to consider checking out the full book.

AUTHOR TERMS

The authors will be given an advance of 1 cent/word, plus a pro rata share of 50% of the royalties.  These are the same terms as the authors from the first Long List Anthology have received.

Risks and challenges

This is the second year of running a Kickstarted anthology based on this premise, so the risks and challenges are well understood.

With last year's experience under my belt, and with all of the details of cover art, interior layout, cover layout, and story permissions already arranged, I expect this project to go very smoothly.
