Note: On October 2nd I broke the big "Novelette Audiobook" stretch goal into individual stretch goals for each story.

Note: Check out the new stretch goals and rewards added on September 21 for production of an audiobook by Skyboat Media, as well as the new Kickstarter video that Skyboat Media put together!

The purpose of the Long List anthology is to celebrate more of the fiction that was loved by the Hugo Award voting audience.

For those who aren't familiar, the Hugo Award is one of the big awards in science fiction, voted by those fans who choose to support WorldCon. If you want to participate, all you have to do is to buy a supporting membership.

The works on the final ballot receive a great deal of attention every year, between copies of stories distributed to voters and discussions about voting on various forums. Every year at WorldCon the Hugo Award administrators publish a list of the top fifteen nominees in each category including those that were on the Hugo ballot. But the works on the long list, also greatly loved by the group of fans voting for the Hugo, tend to not get very much attention. For this anthology I am soliciting the works from this long list to bring more attention to these works, and provide a place to discuss them.

There is a lot of great short fiction out there, and most people don't have time to read it all. Some people use the final Hugo ballot as a recommended reading list and register for WorldCon specifically so that they can get some of the nominated works bundled together in the Hugo packet. The goal here is to widen that celebration of great fan-chosen fiction.

This project is not endorsed by nor affiliated with the Hugo awards, WSFS, WorldCon, or any associated entities.

The base funding goal will include the Short Story category only (stories of 7500 words or less). Stretch goals will expand the anthology to include novelettes (between 7500 and 17,500 words), and then novellas (between 17,500 and 40,000). Novellas may be in the ebook only due to printing constraints--it will depend on the number and length of the stories involved.

Ebook copies will be available in EPUB, MOBI, and PDF.

Thanks to Alex Shvartsman for his helpful advice, Dave Thompson for lending his voice, the donors of the awesome rewards, the writers, and anyone who chooses to donate.

 WHO AM I?

I'm David Steffen, most well known for running the Submission Grinder, a webtool to help writers track their submissions and find markets, which has been around since January 2013. I make all of the new market listings, update the existing listings, and handle all of the user interaction.

The Submission Grinder is an extension of my longer term efforts at Diabolical Plots, an online publication that has continuously published content related to science fiction and fantasy since 2008. Earlier this year Diabolical Plots began publishing original short fiction paid at professional rates, with stories all read anonymously to ensure that the quality of the story was chosen without author identity affecting the editorial choices.

I'm also a writer, with dozens of short stories published in a variety of venues over the last six years.

EXACTLY WHAT STORIES WILL BE IN THE ANTHOLOGY?

Since the full list of nominated works was released by WSFS on August 22, I have spent much of the intervening time querying the authors of the stories on that list. For this anthology I am not the arbiter of taste as I would be when editing another fiction collection; I will be an impartial curator. The Hugo voters are the ones who chose the stories by nominating them. The only criteria that will need to be met for a story to be published:

  • Originally published in 2014.
  • Word length within the funded word length categories (i.e. if a novelette-length story is in the short story nominee list, I will run it only if the novelette level stretch goal is reached)
  • The author agrees to the terms (1 cent/word for non-exclusive reprint rights).
  • If exclusivity periods for the story's original publication still applies, the original publisher must waive this requirement for the story to be published (Many publishers do have a specific clause for "Best Of" anthologies or will choose to waive the requirement)

I have not yet reached all of the authors of the stories on the list.  I am basing the base goal and stretch goals assuming that all the remaining stories will be included to make sure that enough money is budgeted.

Here are the list of stories for each of the categories that I've been able to confirm are available for this anthology if it successfully funds (listed in alphabetical order by author, not necessarily the order they would be in the book). Please note any particular story is not absolutely guaranteed, as contracts are not signed until after the Kickstarter funds, but these are the ones which are intended to be included at this point.  These lists may expand as authors get back to me.

 BUDGET

  •  $500 Fiction
  • $200 Contributor copies and distribution
  • $150 Ebook Layout
  •  $300 Reward production and distribution and other costs
  • $100 Kickstarter and transaction fees
  • ----------------------------------------------------
  • $1250 Total

This budget includes purchasing reprint rights for the 10 available short stories.

ADD-ONS

+Book ($20)
If you want to add a paperback copy of the book to an existing backer reward of $10 or more that involves shipping, just add $20.  If you want to add a paperback copy of the book to an existing backer reward of $10 or more that does not involve shipping, add $20 plus shipping fee (no additional for US, $10 additional for Canada, $15 additional for the rest of the world).  I will ask in the post-funding survey to make sure this is the add-on that you want.

+Audiobook ($15)
If you want to add a digital copy of the audiobook to a backer reward, just add $15.  I will ask in the post-funding survey to make sure this is the add-on that you want.

STRETCH GOALS

Note that as I get more responses from authors about story availability and the word length of stories that I haven't been able to determine, these values may go down.

 $2500
Novelette Level

This stretch goal includes purchasing reprint rights for the 9 available novelettes

$3000
Selected Novella Level

This stretch goal includes purchasing reprints rights for 2 novellas (the two that I have been able to determine are available at the time of campaign launch): "Grand Jeté (The Great Leap)" by Rachel Swirsky and "The Regular" by Ken Liu.

$6500
Short Story Audiobook

This stretch goal will fund audio production by professional audiobook publisher Skyboat Media (see the section WHAT IS SKYBOAT MEDIA? a bit further on for more information).

Audio is my favorite format for fiction.  Adding a great reader can make a great story even better, and I have every confidence in Skyboat Media to enhance the works with their production.  Adding the audio format will also make the stories accessible for the vision impaired and others for which text is not an easily accessible format.

This goal will fund the short story level of the audiobook, of those works from the print and ebook anthology whose audio rights could be acquired.

This will include:

  • "Covenant" by Elizabeth Bear
  • "This Chance Planet" by Elizabeth Bear
  • "The Breath of War" by Aliette de Bodard
  • "The Truth About Owls" by Amal El-Mohtar
  • "When It Ends, He Catches Her" by Eugie Foster
  • "A Kiss With Teeth" by Max Gladstone
  •  "Makeisha in Time" by Rachael K. Jones
  • "Toad Words" by T. Kingfisher
  • "The Vaporization Enthalpy of a Peculiar Pakistani Family" by Usman T. Malik

The authors are still being reached to inquire about these rights, and this list and stretch goal cost will be updated as replies are received.

The audiobooks will be available on Audible, iTunes, Downpour, Amazon, and other retailers.

Authors of the stories in the audiobook at this and higher levels will receive an additional advance, plus royalties of audiobook sales.

 ABOUT THE REWARDS

Most of the rewards should be self-explanatory, but here's a little more information about some of the rewards.

Homemade Jam

The jam will be made by writer and Podcastle co-editor Rachael K. Jones. Choices from a limited set of jams will be offered to the backers who choose this reward. A choice will be provided from a selection of local varieties, depending on seasonal availability.

Rachel Swirsky Writing Question

Rachel Swirsky holds an MFA from the Iowa Writers Workshop and graduated from Clarion West in 2005. She's published seventy short stories in markets varying from Tor.com to The New Haven Review. Her work has been nominated for the Hugo, the Locus Award, the World Fantasy Award, the Sturgeon Award, and others, and twice won the Nebula Award. Her included work, "Grand Jete," was originally printed in Subterranean Online's final issue, has been reprinted in year's best anthologies from Dozois, Strahan, and Horton, and was nominated for the Nebula and World Fantasy Awards. She wrote it in the winter while she was working on her MFA and outside it was very cold and lonely.

Sonnet/Sestina by Ruthanna Emrys

It isn’t Shakespeare: I’ll admit as much;
They’re what I write when I’m not up for prose.
The forms of old are comfort food that shows
The tired writer hasn’t lost her touch.

But though these poems are nothing like the sun,
They might give hazy thoughts a form and shape,
Or make you laugh: give sharpness to a jape;
All poems have purpose, else they lie unspun.

I could compare your love to summer nights,
Abstract your dissertation so it scans,
Or villainous, declaim your cunning plans:
I’ll write an ode to whatever delights.

Still, I reserve the right to add my spin,
So trolls beware: the bard will always win.

Animal Art

Sam J. Miller is a writer and a community organizer. His fiction is in Lightspeed, Asimov’s, Clarkesworld, and The Minnesota Review, among others. He is a nominee for the Nebula and Theodore Sturgeon Awards, a winner of the Shirley Jackson Award, and a graduate of the Clarion Writer’s Workshop. His debut novel The Art of Starving is forthcoming from HarperCollins. He lives in New York City, and at www.samjmiller.com

He is also a visual artist.  The backers that take this reward can give him an animal (including dinosaurs) and an occupation and he will make art depicting the animal working in that occupation.

Here are examples of images he has made for such calls before:

 Crocheted Cthulhu

Crocheted Cthulhu by Sylvia Spruck Wrigley
Crocheted Cthulhu by Sylvia Spruck Wrigley

Handmade, theoretically childsafe. An Elder God who is described as "an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature" with a "pulpy, tentacled head surmounted by a grotesque scaly body with rudimentary wings". The Great Old One is imprisoned on Earth in the sunken city of R'lyeh. This baby Cthulhu yearns for the rising of R'lyeh from the depth of the ocean and the descent of mankind into madness ...and cuddles. Stands approx. 15 cm tall. Wingspan: 13 cm Weight: ~40g (The crocheted Cthulhu was made by writer Sylvia Spruck Wrigley)

Wilson Fowlie Story Recording

Wilson has been reading stories out loud since the age of 4, and credits any talent he has in this area to his parents, who are both excellent at reading aloud. He has been narrating stories for more people than his own family since late 2008, when he answered a call for readers on the PodCastle forum from PodCastle's then-editor, Rachel Swirsky. Since then, he has gone on to become PodCastle's most prolific narrator, reading or appearing in nearly 30 episodes. He's also narrated for many other podcasts, including, of course, PodCastle's sister 'casts, Escape Pod and Pseudopod, as well as StarShipSofa, Protecting Project Pulp, Crime City Central, Tales To Terrify, Beam Me Up, Cast Macabre, Dunesteef Audio Fiction magazine and the Journey Into... podcast. He fits in all this narrating between his day job as a web developer for a tech company in the Greater Vancouver area in Canada, and being the director of a community show chorus called The Maple Leaf Singers.

Graeme Dunlop Story Recording

Graeme is an Application Solution Architect and Voice Actor living in Melbourne Australia. He is the co-host of fantasy podcast PodCastle, the audio producer for the horror podcast Pseudopod, and former host of the YA podcast Cast of Wonders. You can find him on Google+ and he occasionally tweets as @kibitzer on Twitter.

 Cassie Alexander Critique

Cassie Alexander is offering a read and critique of the first 10,000 words of someone’s novel. You’re welcome to include your query letter and synopsis on top of that word count. She’ll be critiquing for plot, pacing, readability, character arcs, voice, how well the opening works, and give overall, general impressions of the story. All critiques will be done in MSWord via track changes, and will be done in under a month. Cassie Alexander is the author of the five book Edie Spence urban fantasy series, comprised of Nightshifted, Moonshifted, Shapeshifted, Deadshifted, and Bloodshifted, and has been published in Germany, France, and the Republic of Czech. She’s an experienced workshopper, having attended Viable Paradise and Clarion West, and frequently is a writing workshop professional at conventions she attends.

 Anaea Lay Critique

Anaea Lay is the voice of Strange Horizons, a reviewer for Publisher's Weekly, and a multiply published author. Her short fiction has appeared in a variety of places including Lightspeed, Nightmare, Apex, Daily Science Fiction and Escape Pod. She has critiqued work for authors including Ken Liu, Beth Cato, Vylar Kaftan and Leah Cypess. She runs the Craft Crucible, a monthly discussion of a short story that focuses on the technique of why it works.

Yoon Ha Lee Critique

Yoon Ha Lee's collection Conservation of Shadows came out from Prime Books in 2013 and was one of Publisher Weekly's Best Books of 2013. His Machineries of Empire trilogy was recently acquired by Solaris Books, with the first volume, Ninefox Gambit, due out in June 2016. His short story "Effigy Nights" was a World Fantasy nominee in 2014. Other short fiction has appeared in Tor.com, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Clarkesworld, Lightspeed, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, and other venues, as well as being reprinted by various Year's Best anthologies.

Usman T. Malik Critique

Usman T. Malik is a Pakistani writer resident in Florida. His work has won a Bram Stoker Award and been a Nebula finalist. His stories have been published or are forthcoming in several Year's Best anthologies, Tor.com, Nightmare, Strange Horizons, and Black Static.

 David Steffen Critiques

Besides the other projects mentioned here, I also have sold and published dozens of my own short stories, have extensive short story critiquing experience from several different writing forums, and have written up a suggested guide of critiquing etiquette. I will give overall impressions, thoughts about themes, with a focus on the beginning and ending that are so important in short fiction.

Risks and challenges

Longer stories, such as the novella category, may be harder to acquire because they may still be on sale as standalone ebooks and/or still under exclusivity clauses from the original publisher. To make the funding goals of the project as realistic as possible, I have tried to reach the authors of all of the stories before the Kickstarter launched, and will adjust the stretch goals downward if stories are not available.

I have editing experience through my work at Diabolical Plots. Both my work at Diabolical Plots and the Submission Grinder require organization and communication skills, which will be key in arranging for reprint rights to these stories. I am confident that I am well-equipped for any challenges that arise.

TO AUDIOBOOK OR NOT TO AUDIOBOOK? That is the question. Stefan Rudnicki and Gabrielle de Cuir of Skyboat Media Audiobooks (www.skyboatmedia.com) will prepare a one-page bullet-point analysis of your novel or book to help you determine if you should pursue an audiobook format of your writing in the current day audiobook market. They will analyze length, estimate production costs, address genre markets, and recommend social media possibilities, casting, and distribution options. Skyboat will need your manuscript emailed to them, and the one-page analysis will be delivered to you within three weeks of receipt. (It is not to be assumed that Skyboat will produce and/or publish your book.)
