Mark of War is a wargame where players command large armies and using turn-based tactics and strategy play head-to-head battles against opponents online.
In Mark of War, players take turns commanding their troops across the battlefield until the enemy is defeated or the mission objective achieved. During a turn you’ll strategically move and position units, claim and defend objectives, pick targets for your archers and war machines to fire upon, cast powerful wizard spells, charge into combat, and battle against enemy heroes!
Even though Mark of War is a turn-based game there is little to no downtime. After ending your turn you will be busy issuing defense commands, responding to charges, accepting challenges from enemy heroes, countering wizard spells, and taunting your opponent. Before all this though you must first Build an Army.
Mark of War will fully support an intuitive and deep army building system where players collect, build and customize their forces preparing them for war.
Collecting - Players will begin with a Starter Army from all factions so they can play the army that appeals to them the most. Then through fighting battles, completing quests, and crafting equipment new troops, spells, and magic items will become available.
Building - Using the ingame army builder players will assemble their forces from a selection of troops, heroes, warmachines, monsters and more. Players will choose which spells their wizards will use and what magic items their heroes will wield. With near limitless combinations and strategies it will be up to you to create your own unstoppable army.
Customization - Basic customization will include background, hero traits and armor selection. With the addition of the Army Painter stretch goal players will also be able to further customize the colors, details and look of their troops for a truly unique force.
Armies in Mark of War will be comprised of a wide variety of troop types each offering different strengths and strategies upon the battlefield.
Heroes - The Heroes are the leaders of your army and they represent you as the Commander. Depending on the army Heroes will range from Warlords to Generals, Master Engineers, Wizards, Princes, Paymasters, and Assassins each with their own unique war gear and set of abilities
Infantry - The backbone of any army is its Infantry. These are the numerous spear and swordsmen that hold the lines.
Cavalry - Heavily armored death knights, shining pegasus riders of the Kingdom, and bear riding feral dwarves of the mountain clans are just a few of the cavalry units in Mark of War.
War machines - From stone-throwing catapults to lead-belching cannons, thunderous chariots to towering siege engines, war machines bring death wherever they go.
Monsters - Many a general has captured such terrifying creatures to ride into battle or to unleash upon their enemies at just the right moment.
Opposing armies clashing upon the battlefield is the core gameplay of Mark of War.
Once both players have assembled their forces it is time to throw down the gauntlet and determine who is the better Commander. Taking turns players will give orders to their units, sending their troops into battle until one army is victorious and the other utterly destroyed.
The Battlefield - With a variety of fantasy themed settings and randomly generated environments battlefields will change from game to game. Each piece of terrain from hill to forest, river to building will provide different gameplay mechanics and strategies. Battles can also take place during the dark of night, or the dawning of a new day, be obscured by fog or pelleted with wind and rain. All of these changes will affect gameplay and require you as the Commander to adapt to the changing conditions.
Game Turn - During a players turn each unit can be moved once and perform one action. Actions can be shooting with a ranged weapon, casting a spell, issuing tactical commands, performing a unit reform, or attacking in combat.
Moving - Units will move across the battlefield marching in disciplined ranks or charging headlong into combat, tunneling from below the ground or landing from the skies above.
Shooting - A key component to controlling the battlefield is supporting your combat units with ranged firepower. Archers are great at picking off small units while the hard hitting crossbows excel at piercing heavily armored foes. Catapults can wipe out an entire block of infantry and cannons are the bane of large monsters.
Magic - A single spell from a wizard can cause utter devastation to the enemy or protect your own troops at critical moments. With multiple magic lores and spells to choose from there are numerous combinations and strategies to master.
Combat - The most direct and effective way to defeat your enemy is through close combat. When units charge they will engage in a bloody clash of steel and skill until one side is wiped out or flees for their lives.
Mark of War will feature multiple game modes at launch so players can test their skills in a variety of ways.
The various modes will offer an enjoyable experiences for casual, hardcore, and competitive players. With a simple and clean interface players will quickly get to where they want to go whether it’s playing with friends, building a new army, or crushing opponents in ranked matches.
Battle - In the standard Battle mode players will be able to fight battles against the AI, other players online and of course connect directly with friends for head-to-head matches. The mode will also offer a tutorial for the game and helpful advice for even veteran gamers.
Ranked Play - Players will fight battles to climb to the heights of the ranked ladder system granting them access to tournaments and unlocking special units and in-game rewards. Ranked Play will be seasonal with the players who have climbed to the highest peak of the ladder receiving limited edition in-game rewards.
Tournaments - Tournaments will range from locally hosted events to grand tournaments, regionals, nationals and even annually held world finals with a host of rewards and prizes. Players will be able to form teams, and create their own custom logos.
Barracks - When players wish to view their collection, build armies, or customize their troops they will do so within the Barracks. Players will also be able to create and save multiple armies, and view their past achievements.
Mercenary - A unique mode where players are challenged to create ad hoc armies from a random selection of troops, spells and magic items and then battle against other players for rewards. The more wins a player can rack up the bigger the rewards, but three losses and you're eliminated.
Stretch Goal: Game Modes - There are several additional games modes that will be added to Mark of War upon reaching the required funding.
Single Player Campaign - A new single player game mode that takes players on an epic and bloody crusade across the realm. Focusing on a young hero, players will delve deep into the lore, politics, and races of the world as they battle against seemingly insurmountable odds.
Map Conquest - A new multiplayer game mode where players battle each other for conquest of the realm. Starting with a small army players will claim territories, gain resources, expand their forces, recruit heroes, craft magic items, form alliances, backstab each other, and all for the sake of ultimate victory.
- Siege Warfare - A new multiplayer game mode where players can build and defend their own towns, forts, and castles with full-on siege warfare. New units and mechanics will be added for ladders, grappling hooks, siege towers, moats, boiling oil, battering rams and much more!
A world engulfed by war and broken asunder by its creator. Armies of brave warriors, titanic beasts, arcane spellweavers and devastating war engines clash for dominance of a fantastical land.
When the Liberator used demon essence to turn humans into orcs these legions overwhelmed all civilisation they encountered. In desperation the Creator removed the barrier that kept his Angels from entering the world and sent them to place their essence upon the humans still loyal to His cause. Thus were the first elves created. The cities raised before the great war fell to the influence of the Liberator or were conquered by the orc legions, and from these cities came the Ascended.
At the end of the great war, the legions of the Liberator had swept all before them and only one city remained. Upon the eve of their victory the orcs were abandoned by their allies. The city held and the Creator unleashed the Day of Wrath, slaying many orcs and tearing asunder the world. The last bastion of the Creator’s design survived as their foes scattered and now after a century of rebuilding the people of the Kingdom are ready to reclaim the lands that have been lost.
The Kingdom Public statement The Kingdom is home to the remaining humans loyal to the Creator’s original vision. The symbol of the Kingdom is three intertwined chain links that represent Discipline, Obedience and Loyalty. These are the three Pillars of Civilisation, which the Kingdom rigorously enforces in law as well as custom. Ruled by the seeress-monarch Queen Elyzabet, Incarnate Serenity of the Creator, the people of the Kingdom live in the fortress-city of Westfort. From birth its people are raised on the Pillars of Civilisation and before reaching maturity children of all backgrounds are schooled in warcraft and formation combat.
“For the Creator and Queen Bez! Charge!” - Syr Martyn of the Vales, the battle of Standford.
The Liberator and those that had been cast as demons into the outer darkness laid their touch upon the humans and made the orcs, filling them with the same hatred of the Tyrant that they held. The orcs were an unstoppable force, righteous in their destruction of all that the Tyrant and humans had built. Upon the eve of their great victory, as the last city of the Tyrant lay within their grasp, the orcs were betrayed by their allies. The city held and the Tyrant unleashed the Day of Wrath, slaying many orcs and tearing asunder the world. Following the Day of Wrath the Liberator disappeared, leaving the orcs alone and without purpose. Many have become common brigands, while a number still hold to their original mission, to purge the land of all the Tyrant’s mark. Some are nihilistic destroyers, known by other orckind as un-orcs or fallen orcs, willing to fight for anything, to die for nothing, but with nothing to live for either.
“There is no place for us in this world until unless we build it with the bones of our enemies.” - Chakok the Flame, Word-tearer of the Dread Legion.
Part-Angel and part-mortal, the Elves are the foremost power of the Creator in the world. The Harmony binds together elven society, ensuring that no elf feels alone or abandoned, and equally prevents any deviation of thought or disenchantment that might breed disobedience or selfishness. The elves live in their own cities high in the mountains, but a good number spend much time in the Kingdom, ensuring that the people of the Kingdom do not pursue forbidden knowledge. Some elves – the Skyborn – are so blessed by the essence of the Creator that they have wings. This is taken as a sign of leadership and nobility.
“He that stands, stands with all. He that fights, fights with all. He that falls, falls alone.” - Lady-Advocate Iomene.
Listening to the teachings of the Liberator, the Ascended have discarded obedience and the unthinking dogma of the Creator for a more enlightened approach to knowledge. The Ascended seek the secrets of the universe in many diverse ways, cleaving to exotic philosophies and using esoteric means to uncover the mysteries that lie beyond the veil of ignorance. Each of the Ascended city-states has its own beliefs, hierarchy, religions and military, but they are all characterised by an expansive and predatory outlook on other societies and races. Some Ascended societies practice slavery, others espouse freedom for all and even take in dissidents of other city-states. Some are run with iron control and brutally enforced codes of belief and behaviour while many are barely-functional anarchic states where the most ruthless or charismatic rule for a short while. The Ascended city-states have one thing in common – an insatiable hunger for resources. Some simply need food and workers, others lust after the study of the myriad beasts and monsters unleashed by the Day of Wrath or the accumulation of history and wisdom.
“If you desire it, seize it. If you despise it, destroy it. That is the secret of a happy life.” - Khadiz Sek, addressing the Anointed Cabal of Hydraphates.
As the armies of the Creator and Liberator brought ruin to the lands, one divine servant grieved for the wounds inflicted upon creation. The divine servant allowed its Essence to be absorbed into the ground itself, giving rise to the race of dwarves, imbuing them with a fierce disposition and desire to protect all things of natural creation. In giving birth to the dwarves the Maker gave up its immortal existence, living on only in the souls of its creations. The dwarves are at one with the world and its ways, at home equally in the deep caves as they are the dense forest or the icy peaks. Imbued with the raw Essence of the Maker they have an affinity for the beasts and birds. This kinship with natural essence allows the dwarves to capture its energy in all manner of artefacts using detailed marks and patterns called Oggra. The dwarves scattered during the great war, seeking out groves, mountain passes, sacred hills and other locations worthy of their protection. These became the clans. Dwarves are of the earth and if returned to the earth they will be reborn, truly dying only when their Essence is taken from them or their bodies so mutilated that their Essence has nothing to rebuild.
“The dwarves and the world are in each other. It is our mother and father. We are its teeth and claws.” - Ruan Orcbaiter, Elder of the Moss Clan.
Nobody knows for sure where the Hollowed Ones first came from. These vampiric creatures appeared shortly after the Day of Wrath, but unlike the other monsters that were released from the Rift, they appear to have a purpose, an agenda to fulfil. The Hollowed Ones have earnt their name because they contain no Essence – no spark of life left over from when the Creator brought the world into being. In order to survive the Hollowed Ones must consume the Essence of other creatures. Even angels and demons can be drained of their Essence by a suitably powerful Hollowed One, leading to True Death for the unfortunate victim. It is rumoured that the Hollowed Ones can, if they choose, make another of their kind,. Certainly they seem to be growing in numbers in recent years. Many theorists agree that the lack of Essence and grotesque physical features are linked to the imprisoning of the demons; some even believe that the Hollowed Ones are the physical remains of the Liberator trying to gather enough Essence to reincarnate itself.
“Puppets. You’re all just puppets already, so why not let me twitch the strings?” - Vagrath Sharptalon.

With a game like Mark of War and our strong commitment to game balance, we just don't know for sure how long the game will have to remain in beta. This may result in delaying the launch but we feel that a high quality experience is the most important.
Our core team is made up of veterans of the video game industry and many of us have worked with each other in the past. That being said we are still a new indie studio making its first game.
