ABOUT THE BOOK:
A few years ago, huge Earthquakes off the coasts of Japan and Sumatra shifted the North Pole about an inch and shortened our days by microseconds. Though hard to see, the physical facade of our world has cracked open and it's only a matter of time until our emotional and mental facades crack open as well. It is here that I feel the world is telling me to pay attention to the stars.
I had been photographing more "traditionally". More like a fly on a wall. Earth changes were quickly reflected in me and I began to photograph as if I had nothing to lose. Everyone has there own personal Genesis, a creation and constant destruction... or do some call that growth? Regardless, we all have immense stories. I could never relay, portray and wrap my hands around the size of the storyline of each person. It was other worldly events like floods and meteors in the sky that made me see that we are in it together. Your story is I.
There seemed to be more truth to offer in a photograph when I took out the details. There was no more storyline to defend. The texture and light begins to look like hope. Subjects can be seen through the eyes of change. The image can run in mass freely with others. I used to take photographs but now I let photographs take me. The camera is an ethereal compass; photography the language of spontaneity.
Luminous Flux, in scientific terms is the measurement of visible light. In book terms it's 70 pages documenting the circuitry of life, the energy, the collective action, will power and the costumes that adorn our adventure.
About 90% of the book is shot on film with medium format cameras. The book will be about 8" x 11". This is a locally made, self published book, hand glued and bound in Chicago, IL with the help of MATT AUSTIN and THE PERCH, who is donating labor and materials for this book. All of the book will be printed in Illinois. The Softcover Edition of the book is printed with archival paper at LATITUDE. The Harcover Edition is clothed, embossed, hand bound and glued. The embossing presses a design by Todd Diederich into the hardcovers book board, leaving a three-dimensional, raised design in the cloth. The cloth is a luminescent purple. Updates will be made to the kickstarter as some of them get made.
The Deluxe Edition of Luminous Flux will include the hardcover as well as a beautifully designed and crafted clamshell case to protect the book (see video). The clamshell case will also be embossed with designs from Todd Diederich.
WALKER BLACKWELL at LATITUDE will be providing labor, ink and his lab to help produce archival inkjet prints of the highest quality. Walker is no stranger to printing museum quality shows and has worked with some of my favorite photographers.
It's actually not even a donation. It's a way to pre-sell my book so I can keep creating exciting work. There are great things to get as well. From small cards to large prints and for some donaters a special and one of a kind DVD... edited from hours of footage I make while out photographing the world, well, just Chicago really. Risks and challenges
The biggest risk is you not ordering a book. All the books are printed in Chicago and our connections with creative doers in the city keeps costs extremely low. My relationship with The Perch and my residency at the Chicago lab Latitude helps make this all a reality.
Timing is everything and the world isn't 100% perfect. If we get in over our heads with too many orders (crossing fingers) some people may get their book deliveries a couple weeks later.
The weather in Chicago can get pretty traumatic. As long as the sun comes up every 5 days or so we should be able to procure all the materials we need to fulfill the orders. But, weather can be an issue though I don't foresee it (famous last words).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
