About this project
About the film
We aim to answer the question: “What is the FGC?” by examining the culture that is competitive fighting games. We want to examine what it means to be a part of this community, whether as a player, organizer, content creator, streamer, or a fan by going into topics such as:
What is the FGC?
The history of the FGC. How did this start and get to where it is today?
The journey from monthly majors to EVO and the toll it takes on players.
Public perception of the FGC, both from within and from the outside world.
How the FGC is represented in the media.
Much, much more
We hope to explore these topics (and many more) by following several key individuals and speaking to a host of figureheads in the community, as well as the larger gaming community. We've reached out to many people to be a part of the project and while we don't want to give them away just yet, we have a nice group of familiar and not so familiar faces on board.
How long will this take to make?
We're looking to start filming from January 2014 all the way to July 2014. This would let us focus our efforts on chronicling the experiences of our chosen subjects as the EVO 2014 season gears up, as well as give us ample time to schedule additional interviews and capture B-roll.
We'll then spend the later half of July into August hard at work putting together a draft to send to film festivals such as Slamdance, SXSW, and Sundance. Hopefully our hard work pays off and we'll be accepted to a few festivals and have the pleasure of showcasing the FGC to the world!
Soon after the submission to festivals, we'll continue working on the rough cut until it's polished and delivered to you in Spring 2015. In the spirit of the grassroots, DIY nature of the FGC, were aiming to distribute the film ourselves. This is the fastest route to getting the film in your hands as soon as possible, anywhere in the world.
Schedule at a glance:
January 2014 - July 2014: Filming of the EVO 2014 season. Conduct interviews with community members as well as other gaming figureheads. Cut promotional videos to share with our audience on our social media outlets.
July 2014 - August 2014: Begin cutting a rough cut of the film and submit to film festivals.
August 2014 - May 2015: Polish the rough cut, color correct and grade the footage, create any required motion graphics, and prepare to release the film.
June 2015: Film release! Backer rewards shipped and digital copy available for purchase/streaming.
We Need You To Make This Happen!
Our initial funds have allow us to secure some of the necessary equipment as well as cover our travel, but in order to really push things to the next level, we’ll need your help. Your support will help us cover further equipment, production, and distribution costs.
How Can We Thank You?
We've put together rewards that'll allow you to pre-order the film on multiple formats such as a direct, DRM free download, DVD, or Blu-Ray as well as other interesting rewards such as a signed transcript of all the interviews in the film, a Q&A session with the director, and even giving you the opportunity to submit a video that showcases your local FGC and have it included in the film.
Please follow our Twitter and like our Facebook page to not only keep updated, but also to ask us any question you may have about the product.
Risks and challenges
Long term projects such as this can sometimes lose focus in not just story, but production. As outlined above, we believe sticking to a strict schedule in not only production, but in audience engagement is extremely important. Ignoring the audience that has helped give you the opportunity to make a dream come true is a cardinal sin in my book. We want to be as transparent as we can about the process and keep our audience involved.
This project was born from my love of fighting games and seeing that same love reflected in the eyes of thousands while travelling the country this past year and I would love the opportunity to share this community’s story with the world.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
