With Austin's booming theatre community, performance space has become scarce. Escalating real estate prices have forced several existing venues to close their doors. Ground Floor Theatre, a new 501(c)(3) non-profit theatre organization will help alleviate this shortage by building a new performance complex located at 979 Springdale in East Austin. Opening Dec. 1, 2014, the new space will not only host Ground Floor Theatre productions, but will also be available to arts groups, business and community groups in the Austin metro area.
Boasting 4,500 square feet of total space, Ground Floor Theatre will house a 140 seat blackbox theatre offering a full-service, professionally managed venue for theatrical productions. Seating and stage configuration is flexible and the space also features two dressing rooms, a green room, a private backstage bathroom and ample parking.
In addition to housing Ground Floor Theatre's company, the venue is already booked to host two major Austin theatre events. Fusebox 60-IN-SIXTY will be the inaugural event hosted in this space on December 9th. Austin's legendary FronteraFest Long Fringe follows, running January 19 - February 1, 2015.
Building a new space brings challenges, but it will lead to huge rewards and we want to invite you to participate! We would like to raise at least $30,000 to help defray the costs. The building itself is near completion, but it still has to be finished out with theatrical lighting, sound, audience seating, dressing room and lobby furnishings. $30,000 is a drop in the bucket, but it will bring us closer to the venue Austin so desperately needs. Your donation is an investment in the future of Austin and its artists. If you believe in the Austin theatre community and want to continue to see it thrive; if you want to see a space where under-represented communities (people of color, LGBTQ, the differently-abled, etc) can have their stories told; or if you just want to invest in the future of our amazing city - this is your chance to make a difference!
Ground Floor Theatre will foster an environment for creative thinkers and artists to produce new works by and for under-represented communities as well as provide a performance space for companies that share our vision.
Risks and challenges
Obviously there are many risks and challenges that come with creating a new theatrical space. We are well prepared to open the space - this building IS HAPPENING. The challenge for us will be keeping it open. That's where you come in - your investment in the future of this company and this space helps to ensure many years of new artistic endeavors.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
