A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Car ventilators for parked cars in open places have been around for years but it has always come at a cost -a terrible user experience. They have been always been poor-quality, inefficient, ready-made and insecure-until now.    

acool is the first of its kind, addressing all the problems of current car ventilators. It is custom-made, secure and solar powered by design, using cross ventilation technology to reduce substantially your exposure to the adverse health effects of high temperature and pollutants in the parked cars.

¹Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are pollutants that emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors, including parked cars (up to ten times higher) than outdoors.

Powered by a 50W solar panel, in module draws in cool and fresh outside air into the car through its 4 blower fans to blow hot air out of the car through the opposite out module. In just 5 minutes, this cross ventilation can replace all of the air in an average size car at least twice to optimize the cabin temperature.

                                        

acool is the first car ventilator to use cross ventilation technology, comprising in and out modules for effective air exchange. This speedy air exchange makes the cabin more comfortable when re-entering the car.

acool is designed and made according to the dimensions of each car's rear door window to ensure the right fit. No rubber strips and trimmings are required to seal the window gaps.

acool provides triple protections to help your car to stay securely closed while the ventilation does its work. It is strong enough to prevent anyone from being able to remove the unit or get into your car. 

acool allows ventilation on hot but cloudy or even rainy days by providing a power option from your car's 12-volt power receptacle, which consumes a small amount of electricity from your car's battery.

acool is the first car ventilator to have an air filter. Dust and particles can be filtered so that only clean air is drawn in.

acool installation is straight forward and simple with a few steps completed in minutes. There is no drilling, no trimming of sealing strips, no tinting, and no alteration. And most conveniently, acool can be kept mounted while driving. 

 acool is the only effective solution to ventilate your parked car.

Every day, you have to live with heat and pollutants such as VOCs in your car. Even with a cool outside temperature of 24 °C, your car inside temperature can rise 10 °C within 10 minutes. And in an hour, the car inside temperature can be 25°C hotter than the outside temperature and VOCs can be 6 times higher. It is definitely harmful to you when you return to take a drive.

The glass windows of a parked car produce a greenhouse effect such that the solar radiation which enters the car is trapped inside, causing a sharp rise in the car cabin temperature. 

High in-car temperatures accelerate the release of VOCs from interior finishes. The hotter the temperature, the more chemicals are released. 

 

VOCs can cause serious health effects in both the short and long term. Health effects vary from minor eye, nose and throat irritations all the way to liver and kidney damage or cancer, depending on the level of exposure.

The UV rays and high temperature can damage and crack interiors including dashboard, steering wheels and car seats.

Rolling down the windows or running the air conditioner at high speed result in higher fuel consumption.

1. Wind down the rear windows on your car and attach in&out modules onto the windows. For automatic windows, steadily wind the window all the way up. 

2.Mount the solar panel inside on the front windshield.

3. Connect the solar panel with the in- module.

4. Turn on acool by solar power.  Green LED light is on.

5. Connect 12-volt power receptacle with the in-module for temporary use, if needed.

6. Turn on acool by receptacle power. Blue LED light is on.

201821697279- this product is designed to reduce the temperature and to maintain air exchange in parked cars. It provides cross ventilation to parked cars, with the in- module powered by a solar panel drawing cool and fresh outside air into the car through its 4 blower fans to blow hot air out of the car through the opposite out- module. 

Most of our team members are everyday car users, suffering from the high heat and pollutants in our parked cars. Current car ventilators can’t help in reducing temperatures and with security problems. We have developed acool to redefine car ventilators, aiming to reduce temperature by over 15°C and VOCs concentrations more than 60% while maintaining car security.

1. Proof of concept and functionality

     c. Average performance: reduction of 5°C

2.Making and testing of engineer prototypes (EP2-3): functional and appearance improvements

   a. Changed DC fan to blower fan 3 pieces to improve airflow and soundproof.

   b. Planned to use injection molding for covers and fan containers.

   c. Replaced acrylic channels for window boards by to stainless steel to promote strength and security.

   d. Replaced screws with 3M double coated acrylic acid foam tape for channels for waterproof and better strength.

   e. Tested on  

  • Volkswagen Golf Mark 6 1.4TS1  
  • Honda Odyssey 2012  
  • Landrover Discovery 3

    f. Average performance: reduction of 9-10°C and reduction of VOCs concentrations by 40%.

3. Making and testing of the final engineer prototype:

   a. Finished mould drawings for covers and fan containers and arranged 3D printings based on the dimensions of drawings for final engineer prototype.

    b. Replaced screws by 3M double coated acrylic acid foam tape for cover.

   c. Added 3 security screws to strengthen security. 

   d. Replaced 40W solar panel by 50W and add 1 piece blower fan to strength air flow.

   e. Tested on

  • Landrover Discovery 3

   f. Average performance: reduction of 15-20°C and reduction of VOCs concentrations by 80%.

4. Next steps: We are ready to  

   a. refine our prototypes.

   b. start the injection moulding for cover and fan containers.

   c. refine bill of materials.

   d. make and test production prototype and further refinements.

   e. start production.

1. In line with studies¹², even at relatively cool ambient temperatures, the temperature rise in cars parked outside is substantial. Figure 1 shows that with outside temperature at 23-25°C, car inside temperature increased by up to 22-24 °C.

2. acool, developed to perform air exchange, was tested and Figure 2 shows that the cross ventilation system was effective in mitigation of rise in cabin air temperature with a reduction of 15°C to 18°C.

3.  acool is designed to reduce VOC concentrations inside cars. Figure 3 depicts that cross ventilation has a significant effect on decreasing VOC concentrations by up to 80%¹.

For over 10 years, we have tied closely with a partner factory in China with great experience and expertise in manufacturing, and good delivery records. The factory is equipped with full scale facilities including high-speed mounters, re-flow soldering system, automatic ultrasonic wedge bonders, epoxy die bonders, and plastic injection moulding machines. 

We believe that crowdfunding gives people the chance to support us in creating a product that can really benefit personal and family health. We want to raise awareness of the issues around temperature problems in parked car and to gather valuable feedback from concerned people that we can develop into the final product that they will receive. Funding would be used to support the moulding, production tooling and equipment, purchase materials and expand our production line to cover cars of all years, makes and models.

After the campaign concludes, we will set out to make these designs, which will be collected from our backers. Then we will deliver customized acool to all of our backers through this campaign!

Risks and challenges

The specialty of acool is that it provides an effective cross ventilation within the car cabin while maintaining security and customization. While it adds to the beauty of your car and the effectiveness of acool, it also means added work for us to perfect a different size for each car.

The process has been defined and our team is experienced in the manufacturing world to cover all the cars out there and to meet our timeline. Our goal is to have acool delivered to all the backers before the coming summer and for everyone to be prepared to beat the heat! We are truly excited about getting acool into people's hands.

As with any hardware project, there are natural risks and challenges in engineering and manufacturing. We've done a lot to minimize risks for backers: We have completed generations of prototypes that have demonstrated all the key functionality and appearance. These really help to minimize any potential issues that may come up. Accordingly, we have completed our design for manufacturing processes so that we have a clear vision of how long it takes from when the various components reach us and the final product reaches your door.

In addition, we have already teamed with our partner manufacturer and have begun moulding and the making of a production prototype. We will also do our best to be as transparent as possible and keep you informed, and work hard to resolve any issues that may arise.
