We are working to implement a strong and widely-adopted local currency for the Baltimore, MD metropolitan area, and our Kickstarter goal is to collect funds for an initial print run of paper bills: BNotes.
We revealed the final BNote designs at a press conference in Baltimore on Feb. 25th, and simultaneously right here on Kickstarter! They pay homage to two great Baltimore city sages: Frederick Douglass on the 1-BNote bill, and Edgar Allan Poe on the 5-BNote bill (click on Updates to view the images).
Local currencies have begun sprouting all over Europe and the USA, including the inspirational BerkShares (berkshares.org), because they strengthen regional economic resiliency, create local jobs, and boost community pride. Here's how: 10 dollars can be exchanged for 11 BNotes, which will be accepted by participating local merchants as equal to dollars. The incentive of this built-in discount draws money into the local economy and encourages it to be spent there, supporting local businesses instead of letting corporate chains take it out of the community. Visit our website, baltimoregreencurrency.org, for more information.
We hope to raise $12,000 to cover the printing costs for about 120,000 bills with strong counterfeit protection. We estimate that this quantity will be well-supported by our initial network of businesses and local users, as well as all exchanges made over the course of the first year in circulation. We have set our minimum goal lower at $8,000, since that will still print about 60,000 bills, enough to support initial circulation and adoption. However, we want to avoid the wasteful expense of additional small print runs in the first year just to meet demand, as has been necessary for some successful local currencies.
So please help us reach $12,000, so we can make the BNote a fundamental and inspirational part of the local economy and communities of Baltimore!
