ENGLISH (Inglés luego español):

A few days before Passover, Fernanda, a young Mexican woman, is hired by a Brooklyn cleaning agency to work in the local Jewish Hasidic community. Despite a prolonged wait for her payment, Fernanda continues to faithfully show up for work each day at Nechama’s house. An unexpected connection between the two leads to a fight for justice against the cleaning agency at fault, bridging the gaps between their very different worlds.

The story behind Division Ave is inspired by true events happening to this day on the corner of Division & Marcy Ave in Brooklyn, NY. This modern day slave labor started decades ago in the early 1990’s, in a different Williamsburg location. It is common practice for individuals and companies to frequent Division & Marcy early in the morning and hire a cleaning lady for the day. The women, mostly immigrants from Latin America and Eastern Europe, are often underpaid and/or sexually abused.

Watch the teaser trailer:

The events depicted in the film are the reality of many immigrant men and women who are often mistreated and underpaid. The New York law protects the employees in this case, who are often afraid to speak up due to concerns of losing their job. This is a chance for New Yorkers to take a stand and say: we stand behind you, we support you, we encourage you to speak up. Together we can make a change.

There are still actions to be taken regarding the reality of the women of Division Ave: They hope to move to an indoors space for the daily gathering, to raise their minimum wage to $15/hr, to sign contracts with the employers and to be provided with necessary safety equipment (hats, gloves) when working in construction sites. Supporting the film means supporting domestic workers in NYC.

Risks and challenges

Creating a film is no small task. From script editing, to scheduling, to casting, to securing locations, there is a lot of work to be done and a lot that can go wrong in the process. Luckily, we managed to put together a great team that includes experienced and talented individuals.

Other things that could delay the process -
*MTA decides to shut down the L train earlier than expected.
*A hurricane shuts down the entire electricity system in NY.
*Everyone on set gets food poisoning from the catering.
*Everyone gets their period.
*Trump.

RIESGOS Y DESAFIOS

*Trump.
