In a world of mass produced cases, Fraemes let you stand out. 3D-printed Fraemes are one of a kind.
These colorful, customizable, interchangeable creations allow you to change your Fraeme as often as you change your mind. Because they are 3D-printed, every case is individually produced, and we can give you a number of design options you want and deserve. Even better, you can swap the design out whenever you want thanks to Fraemes’ two part style – a protective rubber bumper and an insert.
We're passionate about the transformative power of 3D printing and want this to become the first 3D printed product that millions of people carry - but we need your help to manufacture our rubber bumper - and get the word out.
3D printing a Fraemes design at home (or in this case, at TechShop San Francisco)
The Fraemes team loves the technology behind the cases – easy to use interfaces and hard computer graphics problems. We've built a real-time mesh generation pipeline that connects to a beautiful rendering system and a web-based 3D viewer using WebGL. In non-hacker speak, our system makes it seamless for a designer to create an insert and then for you to personalize them. Plus, 3D printing means Fraemes inserts can have cool cut-outs and textures unlikes most current smartphone cases.
We use Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) 3D printers to 3D print Fraemes, but they can also be printed on consumer 3D printers with FDM/FFM or SLS technology.

A Personalized Case made for you
Creating your own personal Fraemes case is a two part process. First, select a design, then personalize it.
Step 1: Fraemes believes that everyone deserves access to great art. We also believe in the talent of young designers. That's why we've partnered with so many of them to create a collection of awesome designs for you to choose from. We have ~150 designs at launch - which include vintage, patterns/monograms, memes, nature, Brooklyn, San Francisco, music, and even some animals dressed up as hipsters.
Plus, every time you buy an insert, the designer gets a cut.
Step 2: Personalize. For some designs, you can personalize them with text and then pick your color. We're still deciding on our final colors, though we’ll likely offer red, blue, pink, green, purple, and orange. (Colors in pictures will vary from final options).
Design your own (for designers/illustrators)
Want even more customization? Do you have design skills – or know someone who does? With Fraemes, designers can easily create their own insert design from scratch using our simple template. Once you've created your own design, we'll 3D print it for you.
Have us design one for you
For those who don’t know a lick about design, never fear! Our design team can custom-create one for you. (Just be sure to pick the right reward level.) It's perfect for sports teams, fraternities/sororities, causes, and companies.
Our designers have created several cases for causes we believe in. When you pick your case after the Kickstarter is complete, you can pick one of our 'cause designs' and we'll donate 50% of profits to an associated organization. If you're a social enterprise that wants it's own case, please get in touch.
We're also placing 1% of our equity into a social enterprise for the causes we think we can impact as a company (today, 3D printing in schools and emerging markets). If you're a teacher who wants to use Fraemes for a class project, let us know at firstname.lastname@example.org
Strong and stronger
Fraemes are strong but flexible. Inserts are made using the newest 3D nylon printing technology, which is a fancy way of saying they're practically plastic. And they’re easy to clean – just wipe down your case with a little soap and water if it gets dirty. Bumpers are made of a rubberized plastic, which means they’re easy to get on and off your phone, they securely hold inserts in place, and they give your phone a lot of protection from bumps and bruises.
$10 (Bumper + STL file): Pick from a subset of the Fraemes designs (~50), and we'll send you the STL file for 3D printing yourself plus a rubber bumper in the mail - that and an angel will get its wings. (We unfortunately can't offer all our designs as a downloadable file, due to copyright restrictions by the designers we work with).
$25: Early bird! Be one of the very first to get a Fraemes case and get a nice extra discount. You get 1 black bumper (iPhone 5, iPhone 5S) + 1 insert from our awesome collection that you can personalize with text.
$32: Be (almost) one of the first to get a Fraemes case. You get 1 black bumper (iPhone 5, iPhone 5S) + 1 insert from our awesome collection.
$42: Fraemes in Metallics: You get 1 black bumper + 1 insert in Silver or Gold.
$45: A Fraemes case and an extra insert. What makes Fraemes so cool is that you can swap the inserts in and out whenever you want. You'll get 1 black bumper (iPhone 5, iPhone 5S) + 2 inserts from our awesome collection that you can personalize with text.
$50: Design your own Fraemes. You get 1 black bumper (iPhone 5, iPhone 5S) + 1 totally custom insert based on your design. We’ll give you our proprietary insert template (don’t worry, it’s easy to use if you’ve got some design chops) and you can have fun creating your own totally unique design. We’ll then make sure it’s in perfect shape and 3D print it for you to work with you Fraemes bumper. Plus, if we like your design, we’ll ask if we can sell it on our site. (Read more about custom designs in FAQs)
$250: Fraemes for the year. Change your Fraemes insert as often as you change your mind. You get 1 black bumper (iPhone 5, iPhone 5S) + 12 inserts from our awesome collection to keep you going all year long.
$350: 1 Fraemes bumper and 10 copies of an insert designed by us. Send us your logo or other design and our design team will create a custom insert. Perfect for the person who wants a completely unique design, or the company, team, club, band, or other group that wants to show their shared pride. We're always happy to provide you more than ten of your custom design in the future. See our notes in the FAQ below.
Are Fraemes real yet? Yes. All the photos you see, unless otherwise noted – are photographs of fully functioning v4 Fraemes cases. We've been using them on our iPhones for months. However, the final product that you get will be the final rubber bumper.
Are Fraemes really 3D-printed? Yes, the inserts are. Awesome, right?!
Do I need my own 3D printer to use Fraemes? No - we'll handle all the 3D printing for you, except in our first reward level. All you have to do is tell us what design you want.
Can I buy more inserts? Absolutely! After the Kickstarter closes, we'll be launching a full retail site at fraemes.com. There you'll be able to order as many inserts as you want that will all slide into your existing bumper.
So why do you need our help? Manufacturing the final, awesome bumpers will take some upfront cash.
How did Fraemes come about? Our team loved the power of 3D printing and wanted to make it accessible to millions of people. We wanted a case that was more personal and said something about us. Plus, we fell in love with the challenge of making user interfaces and products people loved.
I love my smartphone. How protective is a Fraemes bumper? Our rubber bumper will be strong. It won't be an armored tank (for that we love Otterbox), but it'll have strong shock absorption and do a great job of protecting the most fragile aspects of your phone.
Anything else I should know about the bumper? We've made our bumper to be a perfect fit - and so it sadly means that Fraemes don't play nicely with screen protectors. It's something we'll fix in our next iteration, but in this first batch, we won't be able to provide a bumper that works if you use a screen protector. Sorry about that.
Can I really create a totally custom design? Yes. You just need to use our graphic design template (in your favorite drawing program, like Adobe Illustrator). Our template is really easy to use for designers, and has step-by-step directions to guide you along the way. Just pick the right reward level to get the template – the Design Your Own one. If we ask to sell your design on Fraemes, we'll also refund you $10 plus pay you every time the design is sold.
Can you create a custom design for my team or my company? Yes. We've got a team of great designers at the ready.
You'll send us your logo or other idea, and we'll put our designers to work translating your vision into a 3D-printable reality. We'll give you two rounds of revisions to make sure you get a design you like. Of course, there are some limitations on what the design can look like. For example it has to be one color, but we’re confident we can make something you’ll love. Just pick the right reward level to have us create the design for you. And you can drop us a note, if you want more of the final design for your friends, teammates, or coworkers (it'll be much cheaper once the first design is made).
When will you start shipping? We anticipate having all cases delivered within 120 days of the Kickstarter campaign’s conclusion. However, we hope to have the earliest batch ready much earlier – more like 30 days. We know that's a while to wait, but we don't want to let you down by being late - and so purposefully have extended our dates. We expect many customers to receive cases earlier than May, but we can't promise.
What phones do you support? At launch, we will support the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S. Next up we’ll be working on the new Samsung Galaxy S5. Please let us know in the comments if there's another phone you want us to support soon.
I have my own 3D printer. Can I get the STL file? While some designs (~30) are available under a Creative Commons license, many of our designs are copyrighted by our designers and can't be shared outside the Fraemes platform currently. We hope to change that in the future.
Can inserts be interchanged between different phone models? The designs can be interchanged between the iPhone 5/5S and 5C. For future phones, this likely will not be the case.
What will the actual retail price be? After the Kickstarter campaign, we think the retail price will be a little bit less than $40 for a Fraemes case – $15+ for the bumper and $20 per insert.
What about international orders? Shipping internationally is hard for most Kickstarter campaigns. We do it reluctantly, hating that we can't provide the best prices, good shipping times, or great support, but knowing there'll be a few people who get so excited about Fraemes that they have to have one. We'll charge $30 more for each order (it's expensive, we know, but we prefer to use postal methods with a low likelihood of loss/damage), it'll take 2-4 weeks extra to ship out, you'll have to pay all customs fees yourself. That's a mouthful, but rather than remove the international option completely, we preferred to add a ton of caveats.
As some of our team lives in the France and the UK, there's some likelihood we'll be able to use domestic mail, and if so, will refund the money we save for backers in those two countries.
Any legal notes? All custom designs must adhere to all applicable trademark and copyright law.
Our Thanks Thanks to our amazing illustrator, Lea, for helping get our Kickstarter campaign together, to Jim Laabs Music for our lovely accordion track, and to one of our high school friends Viren, for putting together our Behind the Scenes music track at the age of 14.
Thanks to Shapeways for helping us get hundreds of prints, and to all the early prototyping machines we used from our RepRap, to the Noisebridge's Makerbot Cupcake, to our Ultimaker, to our friend's Type A Series 1, to the communal Makerbot.
Thanks for your support!
From Start to Finish
Fraemes was a long road made possible by the friends we made along the journey, fueled by milkshakes and our own passion for 3D printing. Building physical products is not easy, and if you're a person or team looking to do one yourself, and think we can help, please do reach out (email@example.com).

Risks and challenges
We’ve worked hard to get as many kinks out of our system as possible. In fact, we’ve already produced several hundred Fraemes cases (both bumper and insert) without any (well, very few) issues. If we hit our goal, we're pretty darn confident that we can send out the rewards within our timeframe.
We've got Koji already designing the rubber bumper - and some initial tooling complete. However, switching bumpers does mean some increased production risk – despite our best efforts, it might take a couple tries to get the bumper as high of quality as we want. So there's some risk that our deadlines will slip.
Of course, we'll keep you updated all along the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
