Really Ready to Read! - A book by a kid for kids
"Really Ready to Read" is a book by a kid for kids that empowers them to understand they have a voice and a vision that has value.
It is our hope that this whimsical book created from the point of view of a child will engage and entertain your children and fuel their love of reading and desire to participate.
Want to know what the world looks and sounds like to a child? Ask a child.
To our daughter, Brielle, the world consists of pink “knights knocking with their knees” and “whistling white whales eating wheat.” We discovered this while playing one of our family’s favorite games creating silly sentences using words starting with or including the same sounds.
During the long cold winter of 2015, Brielle began writing and illustrating these sentences. While working with our daughter to sound out the words and write the sentences in the book, she became more cognizant of blended sounds such as au-, br- and ch- and increasingly "really ready to read." Brielle then collaborated with her sitter Ivy, who happens to be an art major at a NYC public high school, to illustrate the sentences and bring them to life.
“The book is really engaging and I think that is the most important part for kids to be able to relate to it and learn at the same time.” - Executive Director, LiteracyINC
“What Brielle really models is all children are writers and all children are authors and that putting your mind on paper is not something you need to wait until your literacy skills are fully mature and that this is something all children can do at all ages. Brielle really models for young children that they can be authors too and that they can take ownership over their own literacy." - JCC Manhattan Nursery School Director
“The children really enjoyed the concept of the book. They noticed the highlighted sounds instantaneously. I’ve never seen a book like this. What a great way to learn beginning blending sounds.” - Early literacy teacher, Book Nook
Our parenting philosophy is simple: It is the quality of time we spend together as a family that we believe empowers our daughter to thrive. We make every minute count by being as present and playful as possible, to enjoy our time together no matter where we are or what we are doing. In fact, the inspiration for this book came while playing word games during car rides and walks on the city streets.
We decided to self-publish the book and include bonus pages for families to have fun creating their own sentences together. We are also offering the "Really Ready to Read" soundtrack* sung by children 5 – 7 years old so you can sing along and play a “hot potato” game with this or any other book. Whoever is holding the book when the music stops has to randomly select and read a page. Help your child sound out the words and have fun playing together.
HELP ALL KIDS THRIVE
One evening, totally exhausted from trying to keep up with household, childcare and work responsibilities while developing this campaign, I told our now 5 year old daughter that I thought the book and video we created together were masterpieces. She then said, "Mama, you are the masterpiece" which brought tears to my eyes.
Join us in helping other parents empower their children. Based on the positive feedback we received from family and friends, as well as leaders in the educational field (see video) we are launching a kickstarter campaign to get the book in the hands and homes of as many people as possible.
We hope you will enjoy reading this book to your family and support us in donating to leading literacy charities to help other families provide the brightest future for their children by fostering a love of reading. A portion of the funds we raise and/or copies of our book will be given to leading not-for-profit organizations promoting and facilitating early literacy including the Association for Library Service to Children, Literacy INC and Reach out and Read.
What is the status of the book?
It is REALLY READY! We have test printed several copies to get feedback. See video for very encouraging and exciting parent, children and educator reactions.
When can I expect the book?
You can you expect delivery of this book during the Winter 2016 if not before the end of 2015. We will be in touch via email following the close of this campaign once we reach our $10,000 fundraising target to provide estimated shipping times.
What is the length of the book?
48 pages consisting of 21 different blended sounds each crafted into a silly sentence and colorful pictures to match. Plus, we have included additional blended sound worksheet pages for you to create and illustrate a sentence together, as well as additional pages for you to try to create more sentences and illustrations on your own.
Who will enjoy this book?
This book is suitable for girls and boys of all ages 0 - 8. It is our experience that young children including preschoolers love the whimsical pictures and silly sentences, Kindergarten-aged kids are particularly intrigued by the repetitive sounds that sound familiar to them, first graders quickly recognize and can often read these sounds as they are learning them in school and second graders and older have loved reading the book by themselves as it is quite entertaining with some new words to learn.
Which charities do we support?
We want to make a difference in the lives of as many children as possible. We will be distributing a portion of the proceeds and/or copies of "Really Ready to Read" to organizations near and dear to us including, but not limited to the following leading charities supporting early literacy:
1. The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) is the world's largest organization dedicated to the support and enhancement of library service to children. From creative programming and best practices to continuing education and professional connections—ALSC members are innovators in the field of children's library service. Due to organizational policies, we can only donate monetarily.
2. Reach Out and Read is an evidence-based nonprofit organization of medical providers who promote early literacy and school readiness in pediatric exam rooms nationwide by integrating children's books and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud into well-child visits. We have permission to donate our book and money to this organization.
3. Literacy Inc. builds neighborhood networks that support young readers by working with schools, libraries, and community partners. Our community-based strategy targets families in high-need, high-potential neighborhoods across New York City. We have permission to donate our book and money to this organization.
*A special thanks to Mark York of Shuffles tap school for creating and playing our soundtrack and Brielle's class for singing so beautifully and enthusiastically.
Risks and challenges
Our book is completed and we have done a successful test print at one reputable self publisher. We expect this publisher and several others we have been in touch with can ensure delivery of our books to our backers by or before February 2016. We are hoping for a large number of orders so we plan to partner with BackerKit which will facilitate all fulfillment house selection (we are already in touch with the few they recommended to expedite shipment to our backers), post-campaign communication and customer service. In sum, we feel confident we have a good plan in place to get the books and correspondence out to our backers efficiently and effectively.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
