Wayfarers Game Convention
A "West Coast" style Convention held in Pittsburgh, PA. Featuring Tabletop, RPG, LARP, Miniatures & a kids room.
I recently moved to Pittsburgh from the SF Bay Area, where I was a regular attendee of KublaCon, DunDraCon, and a number of other "West Coast" style conventions up and down the coast. I was shocked to discover that - despite an abundance of gamers and game culture - Pittsburgh does not currently have it's own table top game convention.
I recently traveled to another city's "East Coast" style convention and experienced a HUGE culture shock. I had been playing with the idea of starting a convention here in Pittsburgh, but the personal experience inspired me to action! So, I contacted a hotel, checked on viability, and decided to launch this Kickstarter with the goal of bringing a table top gaming convention to Pittsburgh!
A bit about me.
I love going to conventions and sharing in a hobby with all of my new best friends. I want everyone to have as much fun as I do, and feel safe, comfortable, and welcome. I will be working with my husband; together we have put on countless events, including a cross country tour, a 2 day music festival, and a Steampunk Convention.
1. A board game library- Games you can check out during the con in the open play rooms. (If we don't meet this stretch goal, we'll still have games to check out, but if we do, we'll have LOTS of them and they will belong to the Con from year to year, rather than just being borrowed from difference sources.)
2. Live Band- On Saturday night we will have a live band to play our ball.
3. If we get 1000 backers we will move to the convention center.
What we are creating
We are working with local game companies, game groups, and game creators to bring you hours of programing including:

- Trading Card Games
- Collectible Cards
- War Games
- Game & Geek Businesses in our Dealers Hall
- Panels and workshops from Game Industry Professionals
- Play-testing new games
- Game Demos
- Board Games
- Teen games
- Kids game room (child care not included in ticket price)
- AND, pending full funding a Ball with dance lessons and fanciness!
Being our first year, we need to gauge interest and reserve the right number of rooms. We also need to plan the right number of activities etc. Running a Kickstarter ensures that we have the funds to move forward, the interest level to be viable, and have proven that there is a demand to support our existence.
What's in it for you? As a backer you get Badge prices available only to Kickstarter backers.
We aim to create a welcoming space for people to come together, play games, connect with friends, and build community.
To help achieve this, we strictly enforce our code of conduct. Any act of bullying, harassment, prejudice, or sexism, can and will result in a removal from the con, potentially without reimbursement. This includes Vendors and Exhibitors.
Date and Hotel
At the time of launching this Kickstarter, what we can say is that we are in early stages of talks with a very high quality hotel in Downtown Pittsburgh for a weekend that will not conflict with any other major con that we know of and that does not fall on a major holiday weekend.
Pledge $1 to get updates... you can always change your pledge right up to the end of the Kickstarter! PLUS, it'll make it easier for us to find a hotel if we know how many people are coming!
What day is my pass good for?
If you purchased a weekend or attendee plus, you have access to the event all three days.
If you purchased a day pass, it is good for either Friday, Saturday or Sunday. You can contact us in advance to schedule your day, or show up at the convention on the day you wish to attend and we'll issue you a ticket.
Although there might be some exceptions, unlike other gaming conventions that we've been to, a pass will grant you access to most of the convention without any additional charge.
Our con will be run as a blended signup. Most events will have 80% of their seats allotted in advance, and 20% reserved for attendees at the con.
In order to maintain your allotted seat, you need to check in at the desk between 4-24 hours before the event, or your seat will be added to the available seats. Available seats will be given to people who have not signed up in advance either because they forgot to, or because they didn't pre-register for the con. Kickstarter backers will be given preference both in advanced registration and day-of assignments.
How do I exhibit my artwork or games?
Becoming an exhibitor is super simple! During the Kickstarter, you can sign up to be a Exhibitor by choosing the appropriate reward level. Once the Kickstarter has concluded, information on becoming an Exhibitor will be provided on our webpage.
How do I become a Vendor?
Becoming an Vendor is much like becoming an Exhibitor. During the Kickstarter, all you need to do is select the Vendor reward level. After the Kickstarter, if we have space, the sign-up procedure will be listed on the Vendor page of our website.
What is the deference between a vendor and an exhibitor?
Exhibitors can not sell anything, just provide demos, a vendor can sell games and wares.
How do I become part of the Art show?
Becoming part of the Art show is super simple! All you need to do is select the Art show reward. After Kickstarter, if we have space, you can contact us on our part of the Art show page.
How do I volunteer?
The volunteers are the life-blood of any convention. To apply to be a volunteer all you need to do is visit our volunteer Page.
How do I get a Scholarship?
Once our Kickstarter is over, we will match any money contributed for a scholarship. The process for applying for a scholarship will be posted on our webpage, including application deadlines.
Is there a refund policy?
Yes, we do have a refund policy. You can request a refund up-to 48 hours after your purchase, as long as it is not within 7 days of the event. To make a refund request make sure to visit our contact page.
Where can I find the schedule of events?
We are constantly updating the schedule of events leading up to the month of the show. We want you to get excited! So make sure to visit our events page frequently for the most up to date information.
Can my child get in for free?
We are proud to say that all children five (5) years of age and under can enter for free.
Do you have Family Packages available?
Yes! We have bundle ticket packages.To help accommodate the need for families to game together, we have family bundles available on our ticket page.
Risks and challenges
Starting a new conventions is challenging. Venues and Dates are very important, and finding the right sized venue is even harder without being able to accurately gauge potential interest. We are hoping to help solve this problem by running the Kickstarter. Allowing us gauge people's reactions, and see what size venue we need; weather a hotel or convention center.
Conventions also require a lot of organization and preparation. Both my husband and I are excellent at these. He was the founder of a West Coast Steampunk convention that is still going strong, and I have put on a number of productions including the Kickstarter Backed Storytime Burlesque! We have a number of friends who run KublaCon, Celesticon, and other West Coast conventions. We recently attended an East Coast convention where they advertised registration would close at 9pm, but also set their computers to update at 9pm. That's the sort of failure in planning that we would never allow.
Between my husband and I, we have run several Kickstarters that were 100% fulfilled; including Steamstock, The Cross Country Train Tour and Storytime Burlesque. All of these were event-based and similar to the task we are undertaking now. I also ran a Kickstarter for d-Bag, witch is over 98% fulfilled, with the remaining 2% only awaiting updates from customers.
