About

We are running a Kickstarter campaign in order to fund the production of our second collection of sustainable clothes for kids.

We are The Fableists, telling the whole story of where our clothes come from. And our fable has a moral: that we need to learn to buy more wisely.

Our clothing has become disposable and it’s estimated that people in the UK alone dump 500,000 tonnes of clothes in landfill every year - compared to the two million tonnes bought in shops. So we are simply throwing away one quarter of the clothes we buy, each year. If we bought better quality clothing that could withstand repeated wear, if we cared for it properly and if we bought with long-term wear in mind, then we would keep money in our pockets and keep clothes out of landfill.

When I was a kid, no one bought clothes for their children that wouldn’t last at least two siblings at two years each! We lived in hand me downs and those same clothes took us to Granny’s for Sunday lunch, for a paddle in the sea and up the trees in the local park. And they did the same for our sisters, brothers and even cousins.

The Fableists want to change the way that people buy clothes. We want you to buy less and wear more. We launched in October 2013 with our first collection, which consisted of thirteen original artist-designed t-shirts and nine other pieces, including four tops, two jackets, jeans, a denim skirt and a dress.

All of our clothes are made of GOTS certified organic cotton. The cotton we use is grown by a collective of small hold or marginal farmers in India. Their livelihood and farms would not be sustainable were it not for the power of the collective. Our fabrics are made to order and dyed naturally in a closed loop process that recycles almost all of the waste water. The workers at the factories we use are paid a living wage, have rights and access to benefits.

No child labour, sweatshops or poisonous insecticides are used in the making of The Fableists’ clothes.

Our clothes are also made to last. With a nod to vintage work wear, our designs are hard wearing and they will last to be passed on. As such, most of the clothes in our collections are unisex. Most can also be worn year round and we therefore do not produce seasonal collections. At the same time, our clothes look the business. Kids should look and act like kids and not be restricted by their clothes. We are building a wardrobe that can take your kids - both boys and girls - through the year, for all occasions.

We have already successfully launched our business with a collection of clothes. We have received a great deal of press, which you can see on our site and our blog. We have our web site set up and running to sell our first collection but just need a little help to get ahead and order our next collection. As we don't subscribe to fast fashion, our clothes take 3 months from order to delivery.

Here is a sample of the press we have received.

What Are the Rewards?

Some include our limited edition artist-designed t-shirts for kids. Only 500 of each design is printed and each is numbered, like fine art. The full selection can be viewed on our web site but here is a slideshow.

Other items on offer in our rewards include the Smock Dress, Western Shirt, Smock Top, Breton Top, Baseball Tee, Denim Skirt and Dark Denim Jeans.

A day with The Fableists will include insider access to both the fashion world and the advertising world. Spend time with our designer, founder, the people who come up with our advertising ideas, the artists behind our films and more.

Risks and challenges

There is always the chance of delays. We make sure the employees at our factories aren't being forced to work illegal overtime hours in order to meet deadlines. But we have already successfully launched our first collection and therefore understand the time constraints involved in having things made to a high quality and to ethical and environmental standards.

We have held off launching our Kickstarter campaign until we knew that all the pieces of the puzzle were in place. With the soft launch and first collection tried and tested, we are ready to move forward. We have already sampled the second collection, so our patterns and fabrics are all selected and in place, just waiting for us to hit 'GO'! We are also almost finished two amazing brand films, one done by The Mill and the other by director Olivier Venturini of Great Guns films. Both of these will be part of the hard launch for our brand in spring 2014.
