This quote by Leyla Acaroglu during her 2014 TED Talk inspired us as designers and innovators to rethink the electric kettle. Here at MIITO we love a good cup of tea, but let’s face it: traditional kettles are wasteful. In order to make a simple cup of tea, you end up overfilling the kettle. This wastes energy and water and also means you have to wait longer for it to heat up. We set out to change this by eliminating the electric kettle completely and replacing it with MIITO.
MIITO is a super adaptable device that can heat a variety of liquids directly in the vessel of your choice.
MIITO is the game changer that goes beyond your normal kettle needs. You only have to heat the amount of liquid you need using whatever vessel you prefer. And it heats more than just water – it can also heat milk, soup and even more.
MIITO's uncomplicated design works with cups, bowls, glass, teapots, and any other non-ferrous vessel. Simply fill the vessel of your choice with water, place it onto the induction base,immerse the heating rod in the liquid, and let the liquid boil.

The boiling time will vary depending on the vessel you use and the liquid you want to heat. The thicker your vessel is on the bottom, the longer it will take the liquid to boil. For this reason, we would not recommend using a footed kettle or cup. However, you can use any vessel made from non-ferrous materials, such as ceramics (including porcelain, earthenware and stoneware), glass and heat-resistant plastics. One of the things that makes MIITO so intuitive is its one button technology: a touch-sensor button. Simply touch the button and MIITO will enter Standby mode. MITTO will wake its smart sensors and check that the rod is placed in the vessel before starting the heating process. Once the water is boiled, MIITO will switch off automatically or simply press the button again at any time to switch MIITO off manually. MIITO won't be accidentally turned on or off and it won't keep heating your liquid after it reaches the boiling point!
MIITO started as a student project when Nils Chudy and Jasmina Grase were still at the Design Academy Eindhoven (NL).They continued working on it after graduation, eventually leading to them co-founding MIITO. The continuous amount of positive feedback MIITO received, along with a growing list of design and innovation awards and nominations, led Jasmina and Nils devote to start devoting all their time and energy to realizingMIITO. Going the independent route, they turned down offers from companies and advertisers and went straight from being new graduates to co-founders of their own company. In this way, they've managed to keep their original vision for MIITO alive. Earlier in 2015, Jasmina and Nils set up their base in Berlin and teamed up with engineer David Riding so that they could continue their MIITO journey. Before moving to Berlin with his family, David worked in Electric Engineering in England and later established a kitchen appliance company where he developed and distributed home appliances. young international creatives and expert partners, the MIITO team shares boundless energy and passion aimed at leaving their mark on this world through everyday innovative products.
Over a year ago MIITO started as a concept and now it has developed into a working prototype that heats a variety of liquids in different vessels. As you can imagine, we have already gone through multiple stages of development: our initial concept to create a device that heats liquids through induction; countless sketches and 3D designs to work out MIITO's design and technology; a MIITO proof was created to test our concept; then we developed our prototype to reproduce the actual technique and improve the electronics; and now as we prepare for mass production, we are in contact with possible manufacturers who can help us bring MIITO to life.
Of course we still have plenty of steps ahead of us before MIITO is ready for the mass market and that first step is crowdfunding. Once we meet our crowdfunding goal, we will have the means to further perfect MIITOs technology and choose the right materials for the mechanical design. We will also be able to run a test alpha series of MIITOs for initial manufacturing and certification purposes, and collaborate with a professional manufacturer to launch into full-scale production. And finally, we will be able to fulfill your pre-orders and reward your support!.

MIITO Precise will allow you to select the precise temperature you need when heating a liquid. Tea drinkers can choose a temperature between 60-80°C (140-176°F) based on whether they are making a delicate green tea or hearty black brew. Meanwhile, parents can simply lower the temperature to about 37°C (98.5°F) to make sure baby food is heated just right. The new temperature sensor will include:

Risks and challenges
Fortunately for the consumer, appliances used with food and beverages come with strict safety regulations. We don't try to pretend to be experts in this area. That's why we are partnering with an expert who can handle all the necessary steps required to get MIITO approved and certified for the consumer market.
DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURING:
During pre-production, our prototypes are rigorously tested by our engineering and manufacturing experts in order to create an optimal final product. However, we are aware that our MIITO may face additional changes to meet manufacturing and certification requirements. In addition to keeping our supporters up to date, we will make sure any changes during manufacturing uphold our original design intentions and meet the greater interests of our supporters.
Manufacturing a product is complex and involves many people, parts and tools all dependent on each other to keep things running smoothly. If one thing doesn't go as planned, it can lead to any number of disruptions along the production line and result in delays. If anything does come up along the way, we promise to handle it like the pros we are and will keep our supporters informed of any changes.

We have built up a strong network of experts in hardware engineering, tooling, manufacturing, distribution and certification. We are ready for any challenges that may pop up along the way. However, we realize creating an amazing hardware product is a highly complicated process. We promise our complete devotion to bringing MIITO into production and into our backers homes! Furthermore we promise complete transparency and we will communicate on a regular basis with our backers.
Let's say you are making a cup of tea. Simply place the water-filled cup on the induction base, take the heating rod, place it in the cup of water and press the touch-sensor button on the MIITO base. The electromagnetic sensors in the base will sense the rod and begin heating. MIITO does the rest while you prepare your tea. There's no need to hold the rod during the heating process because the disk on its bottom easily keeps the rod upright. Once the water reaches boiling point, MIITO is intuitive enough to go into Standby mode. Then once the rod is lifted out of the water, the base will shut off and the rod can be placed back on the base to cool off.
That’s what we love about MIITO: it's a super flexible system! You can use any vessel you want as long as it is made of heat-resistant and non-ferromagnetic materials (which means no metal that is heated by induction itself). So you can use your favorite ceramic mug, a glass, a heat-resistant plastic container, or a large porcelain teapot. Vessels having a particular shape and form will work better than others with the MIITO system by heating liquids more efficiently and quickly. MIITO is the perfect companion for heating water. Yet, it also works perfectly well with milk-based drinks and coffee. It's also a great way to heat up soups, broths, sauces, and even baby food. As long as the substance is consistently liquid based and doesn't contain solid ingredients, it will work well with MIITO! Just be aware that MIITO isn't optimized for heating food. MIITO needs the natural convection to occur and that works best with liquids – not solid food. You would only end up burning the food rather than heating it properly.
A temperature setting is something we are currently developing and is our top stretch goal. Naturally, we are still fine tuning what exact features it will have and how we will need to adjust the original design concept of MIITO. Ideally, this feature will let you choose between different temperature levels that exactly fit your needs for tea (60-80°C | 140-176°F), coffee (91-96°C | 195-205°F) and even baby food (37°C | 98.5°F). However, we are getting a lot of feedback from people about specific settings they are looking for and would definitely optimize this feature to make it most compatible with everyone's needs.
What can the maximum thickness of a vessel's base be for MIITO to still work? Will it still work efficiently with a footed/thick-based mug?
The thickness of the cup definitely influences the amount of energy that can be transferred from the induction base to the rod. Right now, we are getting excellent heating results in our simulations working with 12mm of distance between the coil and the rod – which is a lot! That means that since the glass surface itself is 3mm thick, you can still have a vessel base thickness of up to 9mm (0.35 in.) for it to heat efficiently. Naturally, if you use a cup or vessel with an even thinner base, the energy being transferred will increase even more and the liquid will heat faster. So while we may advise you to use a thinner bottom-based vessel over a thicker bottom-based one, thicker ones will still work. Please send us a photo of your favorite cup and the thickness of its bottom if you have any doubts and we will let you know what we think!
MIITO is made with easy cleaning in mind. The stainless steel rod can be wiped off with a wet cloth, rinsed off under running water or thrown in the dishwasher. Since the MIITO base contains all the electronics of the device, it's important to treat it like any other electric device: small spills on the base are fine but don't plunge it into water. It's best to wipe down the base with a damp cloth.
The stainless steel heating rod is fully water resistant. It can be put under running water or even in the dishwasher. The MIITO base, on the other hand, contains all the electronic components for inductive heating and should never be submerged in water.
The first edition of MIITO will be a standard electric device you plug into the wall. Each MIITO's plug will also be compatible to the country the device is being shipped to. Of course, we are considering developing a portable version in the future that will either be charged by battery or by solar energy.
What's great about our induction base is that its technology is so much safer than traditional electric cookers. The MIITO base doesn’t get hot at all! So there is no harm that children might burn themselves by touching the base. However, we still recommend that an adult supervises a child when they are using MIITO. There is still the risk of them burning themselves by overturning the heated vessel while it is on the base or by grabbing the heated rod by the wrong side while it is still hot.
How does MIITO compare in heating different liquids? How fast will it heat a cup of milk or bowl of soup?
Water is a very easy substance to heat – you pretty much add as much energy to it as you want and it won’t burn! Other liquids, like milk or soup, are a bit different. You might have noticed this already when heating milk on a stovetop. If you turn the heat too high, the milk – as well as soup – will burn on the bottom of the pot. That's why with MIITO, we need to reduce the energy a bit to make sure we don't burn the milk. But keep in mind that you usually don't want to boil milk or soup, only heat it up. So, bottom line, we expect a cup of milk or soup to heat up within about 2 minutes.
The MIITO system is made for everyday countertop use as long as you take the same general precautions when using any kitchen appliance. The heating rod itself is 280mm (11 in.) tall and the disc on its bottom is 45mm (1.77 in.). So it's not top heavy and its disc bottom helps support it upright. It definitely won't fall over easily! The vessel the rod is placed in will most likely weigh more than the rod, preventing the rod from tipping over the vessel. So it's much like if you have a long thin spoon resting in a cup - if you knock the spoon, it won't likely knock over the cup.
Can I use the MIITO base with my induction compatible pots or the MIITO rod with my own induction stovetop?
We love the technology behind induction stovetops and that's what obviously inspired us to make MIITO! However, since induction stovetops are pretty amazing on their own, we didn't set out to replace them. Instead we wanted to design a new alternative to the kettle. Of course, we love that MIITO is also flexible enough to heat such things as milk and soups. But we designed MIITO to work together, as a base and a rod. In fact, MIITO is intuitively designed to first detect the rod in the vessel before turning on completely so if its sensors don't detect the rod, it won't power on. Plus, traditional induction cooktops are designed to heat larger cookware, so naturally this cookware won't fit on the MIITO base properly or be able to be properly heated. So we cannot recommend using part of the MIITO system with your induction-based appliances.
Unfortunately, as much as we would love to provide each and every supporter around the world with our first MIITOs, there are still numerous trade barriers and restrictions that make this difficult for us. Since we are still a small company, we currently don't have the resources (both financially or time wise) to devote ourselves to this. That's why we are currently only offering shipment to EU countries and continental Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, Gibraltar, Russia, Israel, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. We would prefer to guarantee that supporters in these countries successfully receive their MIITO rather than stretch ourselves too far and not be able to meet individual country's shipping requirements - and fall short of our promise.
However, you may want to also consider the option that some of our supporters in non-shipping countries has chosen to do: Ship MIITO to a friend in a country we ship to and then they can ship it directly to you.
Efficiency is a broad term and makes people think of different things. When we refer to the efficiency of MIITO, we are talking about the complete system of heating liquids. MIITO was designed with this thought in mind: How can we heat just the amount of liquid we want more efficiently? Let's face it, people tend to overfill regular kettles for many different reasons:
-Firstly, some electric kettles have a minimum mark which is at 0.5L, which is twice as much as you need for just one cup of tea.
-Secondly, with any kettle, it is difficult to read the exact amount of liquid in the kettle because a) most indicators on electric kettles are small and poorly marked, b) it's hard to level out the exact water amount while filling it or c) stove-top kettles do not come with a measurement indicator.
-And lastly, sometimes we are just in a rush or just plain lazy. We want to heat our liquids as fast and as easily as possible without always measuring things out.
That's why we wanted to find a way to eliminate overfilling and make it as easy as possible to heat exactly the amount you need using MIITO.
Naturally, some of you may be more interested in talking about efficiency from the technical side: converting electrical energy into thermal energy (electricity to heat up the liquid). If we look at efficiency in only this way, then yes, the efficiency of an electric kettle is phenomenal! While an electric kettle seems to be more than 90% efficient, induction is on average a bit lower at 80-90%. This means that if you would heat 1L of water using an electric kettle and 1L of water using MIITO, the electric kettle would be a tiny bit more efficient.
However, efficiency for us has never been about developing a technology that is more efficient. It is about simply making a system that is a more efficient option to the ones we know and use everyday. By eliminating the overfilling and heating of excess water, we stop wasting water and the energy it would take to heat it! And that sounds pretty efficient to us.
