What started out as an update became a major overhaul so here we go. First I want to thank everyone for their comments and questions about the project, and what better way to thank you than by listening? That being said I’ve made a lot of changes to the project such as adding new rewards that don’t utilize the point system, textured walls, pics of the walls in action, scale pics, showing the progress on the connectivity issue, and dealing with shipping to our friends across the pond.
Before we begin with all the updates I want to clarify that these walls are not complete, this isn’t a pre-order type Kickstarter the project is still developing daily. I did this to allow you the people that are going to be using them a chance to offer your input to make the walls more useful to you. So keep those suggestions, comments, and questions coming! Also, thanks to everyone that has suggested places to promote the project.
Five new reward levels have been added that don’t use the point system, instead they are set. By set I mean that the number and type of walls are pee-determined and cannot be changed. Each reward level has an image of one of the many possible ways these pieces can be arranged and a list of the types of walls and connectors it comes with further down this page. The other rewards are still available for anyone that wants to select their specific pieces using the point system. All rewards will give the backer the option of selecting the texture they want their walls to be, and anyone using the point system can choose multiple texture styles.
Initially I was only offering the modern wall texture with other textures being offered later as stretch goals, but after so many requests for textured walls I’ve decided to offer the choice of five now and add even more texture types as stretch goals. The textures offered now are: Bricks, Cinder-blocks, Vinyl Siding, Field-stone, and the original Modern. Note these pics are 3D models and are still works in progress.
The field-stone walls are being hand sculpted and I'll have pictures of them one here soon.
At the bottom of the project are several pics of games using the Buildings in a Bag, for larger images just click on them. There is also a scale picture with miniatures from different Miniature companies that I use often.
Getting the walls and connectors to stay together has been an issue that I’ve been working on lately, and after trying several methods I think I’ve found the one I’m most happy with. It adds grooves to the insides of the connectors and matching “tongues” to the ends of the walls. The pics show the latest pieces; I’ve increase the thickness of the tongues and grooves since then but haven’t received the pieces from the 3D printers yet to see if that improves anything.
When the walls and connectors inter-lock like this it makes everything more stable and allows floors to be separated simply by lifting up one wall section.
When I first started this project I was worried that something would come up that I was unaware of, and of course that happened when someone asked if the project was EU Friendly. I had no idea what that was until it was explained to me. This was a tough choice to make financially, but in the end I can’t see forcing someone to pay an extra 20-40% to back my Kickstarter project so I contacted a company that handles shipping from inside of the European Union and now yes the project is EU Friendly. However, there is a catch. Due to the issues that would arise from ensuring that backers received exactly what pieces they wanted the only reward levels that are available as EU Friendly are the Locked rewards.
That about wraps it up for this update / overhaul. Next week I’m hoping to have shipping estimates for everyone, but keep in mind these will be rough estimates at best. Hopefully I’ll be able to show the new connection pieces and more progress on the textures too.
The walls and connectors are in 28mm scale.
Here are some images of what each level contains.
Set Gas Station $20
Set Town Hall:
Set City Street:
Rather than force the backers to take specific walls and connectors I decided to use a point system which allows the back to select which pieces they receive. The following is a list of the pieces and their point values.
Here are pictures of some possible choices with the reward levels using the point system. Also note that the five texture choices are available for each wall style and size when using the point system.
Shipping costs will be determined on individual basis due to the fact that weights will vary from backer to backer. I'll will try to keep shipping costs as low as possible.
BUILDINGS IN A BAG in Action:
Risks and challenges
Although I've been making and selling terrain for over a decade I've never attempted to mass produce a product on this scale before. I've tried to plan for every possible problem, but it's the ones you haven't thought of that keep you up at night.
My other concern is the fulfillment date, I'm sure I'm not the first person to start a Kickstarter with the hopes of fulfilling it three months early and terrified it will be three months late, but it is a risk that occupies my mind. It's hard to ask a group of strangers to have faith that they will get their rewards on time, and I can only promise that I will do everything in my power to make that happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
