Interview with Daniel

Daniel is a homeless artist who will be participating in this event if it gets funded. We have developed a unique friendship and he allowed me the opportunity to briefly interview him and here his story: on being taken advantage of, being homeless, and his aspirations.

Off the Margins

Off the margins is a one weekend pop up art gallery that gives marginalized communities a space to showcase their art in which they get 100% of the proceeds from any sale. Artists will include individuals who are affected by homelessness, blindness, disabilities, and other people who are living “off the margins". I  aim to give these people a platform to represent themselves and a way to gain a profit from their own work. This originally started out as being only for the homeless but once people from the blind community reached out inquiring about participating, it opened to people any marginalized community.

As a New York native—growing up here, going to school here, and volunteering here Ive seen first hand the decline of public programs and access to resources. I've worked hard to learn about these communities and help spur change. Last fall, I helped create digital initiatives that could increase volunteering at Food Bank of New York. This spring, I  want to provide a platform where these same communities can showcase their talents.

Who are you helping?

You believe in helping those affected by homelessness, the blindness, the disabled and any communities that might be considered marginalized. So far participating: 2 blind artists and 2 homeless artists. One poet and artist named Twin from Atlanta neighborhood friend Ross Boone wants to help get Twin to the event to showcase his poetry. Below is Twins poetry with an overlay of Ross' artwork of a profile of Twin on top of the pages.

The money will be exclusively used for the following:

  • to provide upfront artists with transportation to the event and frames for their artwork.
  • to subsidize the cost of the gallery space
  • to subsidize the cost of kickstarter backer rewards

Stretch Goals?

I’ve decided not go to with stretch goals since this event is still a work in progress: I’m still connecting with artists and potential venues. If this project surpasses the goal, I would love to provide all participants with a care package.

Who am I?

Hi I'm Jason
Hi I'm Jason

I'm a product designer in the interaction design program at SVA. I've grown up in NY and I've seen the plight of homelessness for 20+ years now plague the greatest city in the world. I often think about what could benefit these communities and what technologies could help. Sometimes I ramble on these thoughts. I've spent a good portion of the past few months interviewing people in this community and learning more about solutions regarding homelessness and marginalized communities. I first started my journey speaking with stakeholders and trying to map homelessness.

As an outsider looking in, I'm not trying to solve an age old problem instead my goal is to continue an ongoing dialogue through art and allow the artist to be the speakers.

In closing

This event is about the juxtaposition of art and the people who create it. On either side of the fence, the canvas of art remains unchanged. Highlighting the skills of those affected by homelessness helps to continue the conversation about those in need and our duty to act. I hope that you’ll join in on the journey, and in advance I give my heartfelt thanks for listening.

Risks and challenges

This project is heavily reliant on securing a space. A majority of the funding will go to that. The reason the funding goal is so high is to ensure the space we get is wheelchair accessible, convenient for the blind and others.

Disclaimer: I am not a gallery owner nor curator. I'm simply an individual who loves art and wants to connect to aid those who need it. I currently have a roster of 4 artists who are looking to showcase numerous pieces at the event and I am working to get more.
