About

We have created a very unique die using the Mayan numbering system (http://www.mayandice.com). We have 5 prototype dice in hand from the producer and they look FANTASTIC! They are standard-sized acrylic dice, 16mm Square-edged Opaque White, balanced with pips engraved in black.

The Maya Empire, centered in the tropical lowlands of what is now Guatemala, reached the peak of its power and influence around the sixth century A.D. The Maya excelled at agriculture, pottery, hieroglyph writing, calendar-making and mathematics, and left behind an astonishing amount of impressive architecture and symbolic artwork.

The numbering system that the Mayans used was similar to the Babylonians but the Mayans chose different numbers as their bases. They used dots to represent numbers under five, so three shows 3 parallel dots, four shows four parallel dots. Five is represented by a single line and six is a single line and a single dot. This is a unary system, but using five as a base rather than the more common ten.

With the dice we use the Mayan numbering system of 1 - 6 the dice can be used just like a standard set of dice in any game, just with a unique twist. Could be a fun way to start a conversation and look back on a time long ago...

The Mayans used three basic symbols for counting:

a (shell) to represent zero
a (stone) dot to represent one.
a (stick) bar to represent five.

The Mayan civilization, which reached its height from 300 A.D. to 900 A.D., had a talent for astronomy. Advanced mathematics and primitive astronomy flourished, creating what many have called the most accurate calendar in the world.

The Mayans predicted a final event that included a solar shift, a Venus transit and violent earthquakes.

Their Long Count calendar begins in 3,114 B.C., marking time in roughly 394-year periods known as Baktuns. Thirteen was a significant, sacred number for the Mayas, and they wrote that the 13th Baktun ends on Dec. 21, 2012.

As you may already know; with Kickstarter; our project will only be funded if we meet our goal amount of $3000. Once met, the dice will be produced with any additional funding going toward marketing, distribution and advertising.

**(INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS ONLY) We are required to fill-out a US Customs form before mailing and will need to complete these forms by hand as they are carbon-transfer paper. The additional costs listed are for International shipping and handling. Thank you in advance, we appreciate your understanding.
