Hi, my name is Matt Rebholz, and I am an artist, printmaker and professor of studio art from Austin, Texas. You can see some of my work at the website for Seattle's Davidson Galleries here.
I recently finished the first chapter of my first graphic novel. Called Floating Head Bounty Killers, it is the story of a Bounty Killer relentlessly pursuing his quarry and can be viewed in it's entirety here. While the Floating Heads play cat and mouse games, we follow them through an increasingly unusual world as narrow, fleshy canyon systems give way to sprawling subterranean temple complexes full of stone idols, monumental statuary and strange labyrinths.
I won’t give away too much, but the big reveal at the end is that all of the action has been going on inside a titanic and densely wrinkled hand. The second chapter, called The Astronomer, is about the owner of that hand, and I am in the midst of working on it as we speak.
So far, it’s feeling a lot like a hallucinatory, post-apocalyptic, cosmic western. A lone astronomer, packing a rifle alongside his telescope, is tracking a comet across a bleak and desolate wasteland littered with the ruins of an ancient civilization. The civilization is largely inspired by pre-Hispanic Mesoamerican art and the story is fixing to get very, very weird as the Astronomer continues his mystical, funky journey.
I've been offered an opportunity to go to the prestigious Vermont Studio Center this July for a residency to complete The Astronomer. That’s where you come in. The Vermont Studio Center isn’t free, and while I've been granted partial funding, I need your help to cover the difference in fees, travel expenses and supplies. As soon as the project is complete, the good folks at Monofonus Press will print up copies of the second chapter and they'll be ready to be shipped out to you.
In exchange for this help, I have some great incentives including copies of the Floating Head Bounty Killers and the forthcoming Astronomer comics, handmade t-shirts, original artwork, etc. etc.
That’s about it. Thanks so much for your support.
