E|MERGE Interdisciplinary Artist Residency at EARTHDANCE, in Plainfield, MA is entering its 3rd year—bringing together 25-35 artists of multiple disciplines for a ground-breaking, collaborative residency: part think-tank, part lab, part workshop, part performance festival. Forging new ground in cross-disciplinary performance, while successfully building a dynamic and powerful interdisciplinary artist network!
E|MERGE is the only artist residency program of its kind in the country!
Artists work in dance studios, cabins on the land, loft spaces, kitchens, attics and outdoor locations. They create installations, film, interactive work, dance, theater, music and genre-busting contemporary performance. Local, national and international artists participate.
While E|MERGE has been an incredible success for the artists in supporting the vibrant mission and environment that Earthdance sustains, Earthdance does not currently have funding for this program. We remain committed to subsidizing this residency for artists, who already have the expenses of travel and time without income for 12 days. We are committed to providing this crucial time and space to hard-working artists.

This residency is unique in its core structure. It provides a multitude of avenues for engagement including time for focused ensemble work, large group resource sharing and feedback, learning labs, workshops, as well as, individual time for rest and reflection. The artistic relationships that have been cultivated in the first two years E|MERGE have extended far beyond the limited time-frame of the residency, catalyzing ongoing and new collaborations as well as career opportunities.
For 2012, the residency has been extended to twelve days, to give the artists more focused project work time. The residency time-line is incredibly intensive. These extra days will allow the artists to engage at full capacity, and garner the most out of their experience.
Resident artists receive staff support, housing, food, unlimited studio time, workshops, and a performance production. A fee from artists covers food expenses. However, this does not cover Earthdance expenses for the support staff and housing.

What past E|MERGE Artist Residents have to say:
"E|MERGE is one of the most innovative arts residencies
imaginable. It is incredible to have at one's disposal, a group of exquisitely
talented interdisciplinary artists who not only have skills, but also have
concentrated space and time to work together. The collaborations that result
are unique and surprisingly unpredictable... As an artist the Emerge residency
gave me both the resources and the time to create what would not have been
possible to create elsewhere. The place became as much a part of the content of
what was created as the content of the piece itself."
-Kristen Greco, choreographer
"Artists are meant to learn from each other, and to defy the hierarchical relationships that have perpetuated mentor/student dysfunction, internalized oppression, isolation, etc. E|MERGE presented a model for interrogating those relationships, breaking them apart, and re-forming them in new ways."
-Emmy Bean, actor/singer/puppeteer
