Rooboard Balance And Core Board For Strength And Fitness
The exercise professionals secret weapon. A functional fitness product designed for busy lives by enhancing our exercise time.
You will transform your core and postural strength, balance, stability and fitness. Designed by Londoner Mason Gilmour-Platt to stay in shape for surfing the Rooboard combines the functionality of many pieces of fitness equipment in a single portable package.
"We are using Kickstarter for a couple of reasons. It gives fellow fitness enthusiasts a chance to purchase the Rooboard at more than 40% discount. And, we can produce to order which lowers the cost, especially for North American pledges as we can ship in bulk for individual distribution. Basically, we want to save you money." MasonGilmour-Platt, Rooboard inventor.
Current users of the Rooboard include surfers, city workers, professional boxers, MMA fighters and members of the British Combined Services Disabled Ski Team. These very early stage Rooboarders have seen huge gains in their stability, agility and postural strength.
The instability element forces the core and stabiliser muscles to engage at all times which in turn increases the intensity of the exercises. This is the secret to the performance of the Rooboard and means you have a shorter workout session for enhanced results.
Sports coaches and personal trainers and users say a 5-10 minute workout can be the most intense you have ever had.
It's been a wonderful journey thus far and as requested it is time to offer the Rooboard with a choice of colours and bring the Surfgym® workouts back into body transforming prominence.
Some of the benefits of using the Rooboard include:
- Postural strength and spinal support
- Balance and stability
- Functional fitness
- Increased calorie burning through HIIT
- Muscular symmetry
- Incredible core strength
- Correcting imbalances
Your Kickstarter colour choices are: burnt orange, olive green, stealth black and ocean blue.
Good things do come in small packages. Single limb and seated training only require a platform as large as the foot, hand and contact width of the posterior while seated. At only 30cm long the Rooboard is probably the smallest balance board or core trainer on the market but it is also the most usable and has been designed for an incredible amount of exercises.
It has an indented EVA grip surface which is also raised 3mm above the deck for extra cushioning. This aids comfort greatly and makes it easy on the hands, feet, bum and forearms.Made from solid polypropylene with a convex centre for extra strength the Rooboard deck is extremely strong and designed to flex to cushion explosive exercises.
The deck has three concave indentations on its bottom surface which enable it to be used as a balance board, fitness step and angle/slant board. The balance pads fit below these indentations. It can be used with one pad or both pads depending on the ability or exercise preference of the user.
Extremely resilient to stress and changes in shape, each deck comes with two EVA foam balance pads. Using computer modelling we were able to discover the perfect degree of hardness for the pads. This mixture of hardness and give in order to create the instability or ‘wobble’ is key to the incredible performance of the Rooboard.
By placing the fulcrum point against the deck rather than the ground we eliminated the sinkage and damage problems caused by other balance products. The Rooboard can be used indoors or outdoors and will not damage your flooring.
The Rooboard was designed to be portable and to be used in almost any location. You can exercise in the office, at home, outdoors or in the gym. They are perfect for commuters and those who use a standing desk.
Because your workout area is so small when using a Rooboard the locations you can exercise is only limited by your imagination. We have been told of the Rooboard being used in stairwells in the workplace, in airports during long haul layovers and even on a plane to improve circulation.
The Rooboard was born out of a passion to increase fitness, strength and balance. It had to increase muscular symmetry and performance for action sports like surfing, skating and skiing. And, it had to fit busy proactive lifestyles, including those cheeky moments when you want to workout quickly and discreetly.
It has been a wonderful fitness and start-up journey for us and we hope the Rooboard can also enhance your lifestyle as it has for many others.
A portion of revenue from every Rooboard sold is donated to SurfAid.
A few years ago I invited friends and fellow surfers to participate in the workout I used to stay balanced, agile and in shape for surfing. I still surfed as often as possible but this was becoming more difficult as I worked long hours in London. I called the workout Surfgym®
We expect Surfgym® to be one of the fastest growing workouts in 2016. As an early adopter you will have a unique opportunity to grow your fitness business and add another revenue stream with a professional licence to instruct Surfgym®.
Your license will include marketing and business growth support, ongoing training and the right to train under the Surfgym® brand, anywhere in the world.
As an early adopter and Kickstarter funder you will receive a lifetime Surfgym® Professional Licence for only £50 or as part of the £100 and £200 pledge packages. This will save you the £150 training and enrolment fee and the £20 per month membership fee.
Each Surfgym® workout session is 10 minutes long and focuses on a specific muscle group or muscular action. The sessions can be added together as per the users requirements or performed as an isolated unit. The degree of intensity and effort can be adjusted to accommodate the varying levels of fitness and ability in a mixed class setting.

A New Zealander now living and working in London with my family. I hold a Diploma in Sports Studies from Otago University and worked in the health and fitness industry for 16 years. I now work as an asset manager in corporate community development.
I have competed in triathlons, multi sports and have run one marathon. Happiest in the ocean or mountains I still surf as often as possible and have recently started wild swimming.
I exercise on the Rooboard for 20 minutes everyday. My postural strength, functonal fitness and balance is the best it has ever been. I am definitely in the best all round shape of my life.
Over the last twenty years I have trained many clients, including athletes, surfers and friends in many different disciplines from speed and agility, functional fitness, plyometrics, body weight training and endurance to mobility and rehabilitation. I have used hundreds of different pieces of equipment from the sublime to the ridiculous and have seen many fads come and go.
I purposely took a slow grow approach when I launched the Rooboard and now with Surfgym. I wanted to produce a product and workout that I was proud to call my own and had every confidence in. I also wanted this small lifestyle business to complement my life and create a sustainable and scaleable experience. A perfect balance.
Risks and challenges
There are no risks. The founder and inventor funded all research and development into the product himself before successfully launching the Rooboard in 2014. Over 1500 units have already been purchased, mostly through word of mouth, in Europe and the US.
Manufacturing, shipping and distribution pathways are already established. All costs are known and are included in the pledge amounts including import, export and tax.
Each Rooboard is checked for quality and finish by the inventor himself before being distributed.
Distribution of the Rooboards is likely to be a little earlier than June but this depends on the final number of units ordered in each colour. The more the better we say.
The Surfgym® fitness classes are currently being conducted in private sessions in London to fine-tune the finished product.
The licence, trademarks, copyrights and contractual details are already in place. Advance filming has taken place and will be trialled to a larger audience in February 2016. All participants will have signed NDA's.
There will be several endorsements from well-known surfers and fitness professionals. Kickstarter funders will be kept up to date with all developments leading to the official launch.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
