This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Fri, May 17 2019 4:00 AM UTC +00:00.
As many of you know, I am a very passionate, overly ambitious person and music has been one of the most consistent passions I have pursued throughout my life. Two years ago, I decided to take a chance and put medical residency on hold to pursue music. In doing so, my plan is to release three EPs leading up to my debut album. And that brings me to this Kickstarter to create the second of those three!
What is this Red Roses project?
In January 2017, I had the idea to make Coupe Cathedral, which is going to be a character development movie with flashbacks and all in music album format (essentially an overly elaborate concept album). The theme is that how we handle relationships and conflict is affected by our past life experiences and when we don’t know those experiences for others, we can have a hard time understanding why people react to things the way they do.
Because doing all of this in the constraints of pop music lyrics would be nearly impossible, I came up with the idea to make 3 EPs that are prequels to the story to help in the process of developing the characters over time. (like the Marvel Universe rather than trying to explain multiple characters and stories at once like Justice League…sorry DC. Do better!)
The first EP, “to Santa and Little Brothers”, goes through the story of main character’s childhood and experiences with girls, conflict with his family, and battle with depression.
The second EP, “Red Roses”, goes through the story of how he starts dating his girlfriend.
The third EP, “Lillies of the Field”, describes the conflict that begins to arise in the relationship as the main character (who still doesn’t have a name clearly) wrestles with some of the realities of being a Black male in America and in a interracial relationship in a time of racial tension.
Each EP will also develop sonically with character from dark and moody pop to R&B-inspired pop to R&B/hip hop (but I’m not a rapper).
This project is to create the second EP!
Why do you need money?
Making music, even if you’re trying to ball on a tight budget, cost a lot. I’m fortunate to know a lot of talented musicians who are will to give discounted rates to help make this project. Even then, $7,000 is the minimum I would need to make this EPs. Having money to cover the cost of making the music would give me the chance to put my own money towards promoting and marketing my music so more than just my friends and family here it.
Where is all this money going?
Here is the budget for this project. Trimmed down to the bare necessities (…the simple bear necessities), the budget looks like this:
Production total: $3000
Recording total: $1000
Post-production total (mixing & mastering): $2000
Kickstarter fees: $550
Perk costs: $450
Project total: $7000
Will it be worth it?
OH YEA! The first EP is out and I can say without a doubt that I’m 100% proud of it. I feel like I’ve been working my whole life from the time I told my parents at 8 years old that I wanted to be musician to now for this project and to Santa and Little Brothers feels like my thesis paper that I’m so excited to share.
And almost every person working on this project is a local Austin or Dallas producer/musician so you’re not only helping me but also a bunch of really talented people who do this for a living. It’s a gift that keeps on giving! It’s practically a local economy stimulus package!
I love making music, telling stories, and doing things with excellence, so please help me make this crazy project idea of mine a reality by donating money to this project. You won’t regret it! Love ya a lot!
Risks and challenges
I plan on releasing "Red Roses" in the fall and at the latest by the end of this year.
You've probably heard of many music releases being delayed and that is a possibility with this as well. In working with multiple people and the need to book studio time, there is a chance that things will take a little longer to complete, but the project should be complete before the ball drops for 2020.
With that said, Red Roses is currently in the works and most of the songs are already written and ready for production so I feel confident that I'll be able to stick pretty close to the release schedule I have planned.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
