About this project
In a 72-hour continuous performance that is part intergalactic jam session and part haunted house party, Theater Plastique invites you to experience a space opera unlike anything else. In an immersive theatrical event as vast as the cosmos, 88 performers will write original music using Dickinson's poetry as a libretto, and every genre of space music imaginable. Like Emily herself, we will strive to once again create a universe in a single room.
Emily Dickinson OUTER SPACE! is the second chapter in Theater Plastique's award-winning POP Trilogy, a triad of performances based on the work of American poets. After a successful workshop at the FURY Festival of Ensemble Performance in San Francisco this summer, Theater Plastique brings this show to the east coast to New York's brave and prestigious Bushwick Starr theater.
Thanks to the amazing support of our hosts at The Bushwick Starr, our costs for this production are minimal, but we still need your help to make this production a success. We need to pay for the boring things like transportation and set storage. But more importantly, we need to pay for the physical costs of this production. We are creating an interactive and immersive space that our audience and our performers will inhabit for this 3-day-long marathon performance. We're building an Igloo and Communal Stardust beds for when people need to rest. Our 88 performers will be dressed in fabulous costumes inspired by Pip & Pop. There will be a giant Disco Cake that will serve as both a place to sit, as well as a platform for our performers. We've broken down the costs below, so you can see what your funds will support.
FUNDING WILL COVER
- $600 - Disco cake (set design)
- $200 - Space Igloo (set design)
- $200 - Communal Stardust Beds (set design)

- $300 - Audience flashlights
- $750 - Astronaut set construction
- $800 - Costumes inspired by Pip & Pop
- $250 - Transportation and storage

This is a party you will not want to miss.

Risks and challenges
Where do we begin? A performance that will last 72 hours! 88 performers who will need to be rehearsed separately by a team of assistant directors, and then coordinated into one cohesive product! A giant disco cake! This production is filled with enormous challenges, but in our opinion, that's what makes it worth doing.
The most complicated element is going to be compiling all of the great work being done by our talented performers into one cohesive performance. The good news is that we have the support of an amazing organization (The Bushwick Starr) who are providing space, marketing, PR, and the administrative support that is essential for an undertaking this huge. So even if we fail to hit our goal, we will still have the space and the performers, and the show will go on.
But without your support, it will jeopardize most of the physical elements of our production. No igloo, no disco cake, no stardust beds... We can be idealistic and claim that for theater to occur all you need are performers and an audience, but we really want that disco cake. And you do too!
So long story short, this is going to happen. We have enthusiastic and talented people all working to create an amazing weekend of theater that will be unlike anything else. Your support will ensure that all of the elements get put into place and your presence will be felt in this intergalactic party that we are making for you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
