Details on the project are below!
Our mission is to provide a comedy experience unlike anything else in the region. The Comedy Project won't just be another room with a stage. We plan to over-deliver in every possible way, providing consistently great and memorable, shows, food, drinks and ambience.
We will specifically be using the money raised on Kickstarter to transform the space into the fun, bomb-shelter-esque venue our city can escape to.
The decor and feel of the space has to walk the fine line between looking and feeling like the set of a post-apocalyptic movie but with the comfort, technology and accessibility of a modern venue. This project includes supplies and decor for the stage and seating area.
In addition to live performances on-site, we will facilitate classes to grow the local comedy community and to help enable the general public and business professionals to use improv tools and theory for career development and innovation within their organizations. The shows and classes will broaden awareness of the improv/sketch comedy art form and provide hands-on training and performance experiences in a manner which reflects the following core values:
· Honor and evangelize the craft of improv/sketch comedy.
· Use every opportunity possible to educate.
· Provide a collaborative work environment which embraces diversity as an essential component of creation.
· Compel our audience members to continually participate in our community with everything we do.
THE COMEDY PROJECT BIOS
Joe Anderson is a graduate of Western Michigan University's competitive theatre program. He is an award-winning director, writer and comedian who worked at the famed Second City comedy theater as a main stage understudy and in the touring company. He also spent 7 years as a board member of the all-volunteer, non-profit Dog Story Theater where he helped produce nearly 100 improv and sketch comedy shows.
Ben Wilke got his start at the famed Second City and Improv Olympic comedy theaters in Chicago. While in the windy city, he performed improv comedy for thousands of audience members before moving back to Michigan where he launched his stand up career. He has since performed in front of national headliners such as Jim Gaffigan, Garfunkle and Oats, Shane Mauss, Kyle Kinane, Roy Wood Jr., Heather McDonald, Mitch Fatel, and many more.
Risks and challenges
We are currently moving forward on a specific location downtown Grand Rapids but if that location is compromised, we will have to move quickly on one of our secondary locations.
Other challenges include some general public unfamiliarity with improv and sketch comedy as a live entertainment option and/or as a method for training businesspeople of all kinds.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
