About

A United States Flag Survived What?!

Almost 30 years ago, the American space program was going strong, sending space shuttles up to space while engaging the exploration excitement of a generation. As a child, I remember waking up at 4 am to gather as a family around our little tv as one space shuttle after another was launched. But on January 28, 1986, our blood went cold as news spread of the explosion of the Challenger. We sat in shock. We cried. We mourned the loss of an amazing crew while wondering what could have gone wrong. This was a devastating day in American history.

But for a small Boy Scouts of America troop, based in Monument, Colorado, the day was even more devastating. Years earlier their Scoutmaster, named Bill Tolbert, had come up with an ingenious idea to give the troop a project to get them excited about scouting and about doing something together. He presented the idea to put their troop’s American flag on a space shuttle. Luckily, Bill had the connections within NASA to get this “mission impossible” accomplished. After their flag was bumped off of several missions, NASA finally announced that their flag would join the first teacher in space on shuttle mission 51-L: the same shuttle mission that exploded during take-off killing all aboard.

The troop was devastated, knowing their flag was gone along with the astronauts and the shuttle itself. But months later, when walking out the door to go to work, Bill saw the headline on his daily newspaper reading “NASA to Return Flag to Boy Scout Troop”. His heart skipped a beat as he realized their flag had not only been found, but was going to return to their troop. After being reunited with their flag at a special ceremony at Falcon Air Force Base, the flag was designated the official flag of the Bicentennial of the Constitution. The troop had the opportunity to take it to Philadelphia and present it to the nation on national television.

I have been inspired by this story since I heard it as a youth growing up in Colorado, as I too was a devout NASA follower and an active Eagle Scout. In 1988 I even had the opportunity to meet this troop while working as a camp counselor and to assist them in raising the Challenger flag in a special flag ceremony at Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch. After completing a patriotic themed film called Forgotten Heroes: An Honor Flight Story, where I traveled with and interviewed a group of World War II veterans, I have felt inspired to tell more patriotic stories and this story was next on my list to commit to film.

What is the goal of the film? As a filmmaker, my goal is to reunite Troop 514, the troop that made the goal, endured the tragedy together and then stood on that stage to reclaim their flag. Through their stories and experiences we can learn the value of reaching out for what may seem like impossible dreams and overcoming tragedies. This is a story that has affected people all over the world and needs to be committed to film so it can continue to inspire people.

In order to tell this story, a production budget will be required to pay the costs of reuniting these scouts and leaders and to produce the film. We have carefully put together a production budget that will cover the costs of the film, if funded. We have carefully set timelines to ensure that the film is completed on-time and within budget.

What does my donation pay for? Producing films like this can be expensive. Costs include reuniting the troop, with all their travel costs, the travel of filmmakers and crew to necessary filming locations to properly tell the story, licensing the proper historical footage, permits, music production costs, state and federal taxes, etc. Essentially, your donation will be used to pay for the production of this film. My time and that of the crew will be donated.

When will the film be produced and released? The goal is to raise the necessary production budget through the rest of 2015 as well as track down all the people involved. Cameras will begin to roll in February 2016, with most filming currently being targeted to be completed by July 2016. Then the film will be edited with the film premier and the DVD release approximately December 2016.

Can I keep track of the film as it is created? Absolutely! Every donor, regardless of donation size, will be given access to our private Facebook community and private website where you can see what we are working on and how it’s coming along. And, for those interested in big donations, take a look at the $5,000 reward where you can be part of the feedback team as the film is in edit! (Note, “feedback team” means I will welcome your suggestions to make the film better, but does not constitute dictator power over the film at this stage. As the director/producer of the film, and the one ultimately responsible for its success, I still get “final say” as suggestions are made. Your input will be of great value to me and you will enjoy the collaborative experience.)

Do you have experience doing this kind of thing? Yes I do! I have produced a total of 9 feature-length documentary films during my career. My latest film, Forgotten Heroes: An Honor Flight Story, can be watched online at www.forgottenheroesfilm.com, and tells the story of a group of World War II veterans who travel together to be honored at the World War II memorial in Washington DC. It was producing this film, and seeing the impact that it is making as I have attended film screenings throughout Oregon, that has made my want to follow it up with the Challenger Flag story. In addition to making documentary films, I work as a video producer for an Oregon-based IT training company. If I am not creatively engaged with a camera in my hand, I just don’t feel whole!

Risks and challenges

I think this is the time to get this story committed to film, and I am excited to make the best film I can as quickly as possible. But, documentary filmmaking is an art, not an exact science, and there could be some bumps and hiccups along the way. If production obstacles cause delays, that could mean that I get the film out to you, our backers, later than anticipated. But, based on my experience making films and the strong team I am putting together, I am confident that I can make a great film and get it out there on schedule.
