About this project
WHAT IS GIVING ME LIFE (IN THE LAND OF THE DEADASS)?
giving me life /gɪvɪg mi laɪf/ idiom. gay, black slang for anything that brings you joy.
deadass /dɛd æs/ idiom. a slang term from New York City, which means to be completely and totally serious.
1. Combined together, "Giving Me Life In The Land of The Deadass” represents the journey to finding joy even in a seriously harsh world. Trust and believe, in the times we're living in, we all need it -- especially for those of us from marginalized communities!
2. "Giving Me Live In The Land of the Deadass" is an Official Selection of the New York Television Festival's Independent Pilot Competition.
WHAT IS THE SERIES ABOUT?
The show follows six Black and Latinx friends as they struggle to live and love in NYC. Each season will have six episodes, with each episode featuring one friend on a shenanigan-filled adventure in a city that gives “no fucks” about an earnest heart or a living wage. The series gives life to characters that are vastly underrepresented in mainstream media, and allows them to take centerstage, showcasing the complexity of race, gender, sexuality and class through a comedic but thought-provoking lens.
WHO ARE THE CHARACTERS?
An idealistic “artivist,”who believes she can change the world before the world changes her. She has a problem accepting reality and boundaries in the city with no limits. Her life gets more complicated when she loses her job and her college crush, Gil, rejoins her circle of friends.
A no-nonsense, career-driven, former valedictorian, who works at an investment-banking firm while studying for her GMATs. A beacon of style and taste -- she's only willing to date women and men who are socialites. She's got her whole life figured out -- but with her high standards, can she find someone to share it with?
His natural charisma, humor and deep spirituality make everyone – even strangers – want to be his best friend. Travis has found a successful, church-going, God-loving man. He has the perfect life...or does he?
A free-spirit who's been taking random jobs and turning couch-surfing into an art form, with the hopes of one day becoming a restaurateur. And although he won’t say “no” to a crazy night out or a one-night stand, he’s a romantic at heart and is looking for the right woman to settle down with. But will his wild ways get in the way of love?
A weed-smoking middle school guidance counselor who's a peacemaker among her friends. With her easy-going demeanor, Jess is everyone’s confidante. Although the ladies love her, she has a problem letting women in — afraid that they might mess with her Zen-like way of life.
A geek-chic, sci-fi fantasy connoisseur who's not afraid to let his Blerd flag fly. Conservative, Gil constantly finds himself struggling between doing what’s expected of him versus what’s truly in his heart.
Their stories are our stories. Not only do they deserved to be told, but we need to be the ones telling them. But we can't do it without you!

Although we are living through "the television renaissance," we can only name a small handful of comedy or dramedy series that star diverse actors (whether it be Black, Latinx, and/or LGBTQ). The fact that we can name them on basically one hand means that we are still thirsty for new shows that challenge today's norms and celebrate the lives of people whose very existence challenge the status quo. We do exist, after all. :)
Help us push the boundaries of television!
