Cooks Who Feed - Fighting Hunger by Reducing Food Waste

CA$ 13,778

167

I'm a mom of three, a wife, and a foodie.  About a year ago, I learnt that about a third of the food we produce gets thrown out. From that point on, I was compelled to help.  I started Cooks Who Feed with the mission of feeding the hungry by reducing food waste.

At Cooks Who Feed we produce beautiful,  handcrafted aprons.

When you buy one of our aprons, you're gonna want to wear it as a cape. This is because you will have...

Reduced food waste

Helped fight hunger

Helped employ poor women, and

Fed their families.

That's pretty super!!!

Let me tell you how we accomplish all this.

Our Corporate Giving

At Cooks Who Feed, we've committed to support charities that share our mission; fighting hunger by reducing food waste.  We provide these charities with corporate contributions that are proportionate to our sales.  We do this so every apron sold creates impact. The amount of our contribution ensures that for every apron sold, our charity partners can provide 100 nutritious meals to those in need.

To date, we’ve partnered with 3 accomplished and award-winning charities; Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, Second Harvest and Feeding India. Here’s a bit on each charity:

Rescuing Leftover Cuisine

Rescuing Leftover Cuisine has rescued over 2.5 million pounds of food and delivered over 2.3 million meals.

Second Harvest

Through its network, Second Harvest provides 34,000 meals daily.

Feeding India

Since 2014, Feeding India has served over 16 million meals.

Combined, these charities have served over 20 million meals by using food that would have otherwise been thrown out.

At Cooks Who Feed, as we grow, our goal is to keep partnering with organizations that fight hunger, focus on reducing food waste, and have proven to be effective and impactful

Our Production

We put a lot of focus on minimizing our impact on the Earth. Some of the things we focus on are reducing our production waste, minimizing the number of shipments and using scrap fabric for packaging instead of plastic.

We’re also socially responsible when it comes to our production team. We work with WORK+SHELTER, an NGO in India that hires women who live in poverty, most of whom have never been given the opportunity to gain an education and are victims of domestic abuse. The NGO provides these women with paid training, a fair wage, and income security. We’re proud to partner with WORK+SHELTER and work with their team of artisans exclusively to produce all of our products.

And yes, even our aprons are socially responsible. At Cooks Who Feed, we only use local, organic and recycled fabrics to create our aprons. So not only are they made with love, they are earth-friendly.

So Why Kickstarter and What's the Goal?

The goal for our campaign is 250 aprons!

We decided to do a Kickstarter campaign because preorders will allow us to fund our first big production run.  A decent size production run will also allow us to get better prices from our suppliers.

If we have a really successful Kickstarter, we want to bring our other apron designs to life.  We have 4 more designs already completed and have a small line of children's aprons.

Risks and challenges

Should we get more orders than we expect, it may take us longer to fulfill our orders. Our production team can only produce so many aprons a day. Our artisans work a maximum of 8 hours per day as we encourage a work/life balance. We also pride ourselves on the quality of our aprons, which can only be achieved when time and attention to detail goes into the product. Our partner NGO does continually hire and train more women, but of course, this all takes time.

Unexpected Supply Chain Speed Bumps

There's always a possibility that things outside of our control may impact our fulfillment timeline. If something like this comes up, we'll make sure to keep constant communication with our backers!
