This project is created to raise funds for the translation of Sergei Loiko's novel AIRPORT into English. Loiko was the only foreign correspondent who spent four days with Ukrainian "Cyborgs" during the 2014 Donetsk siege. His novel is a fictionalized account of what he witnessed there with his own eyes, and many of the book's characters and plot lines are based on the real people he met and events he experienced.

The first edition of the book was published in Russian and Ukrainian in Kiev and sold over 40,000 copies in 2015. Despite the book's popularity, Sergei Loiko has not earned any profits from sales because his purpose for this book is to create awareness about the Russian-Ukrainian war, and the Donetsk airport siege in particular, and commemorate the heroism of the Ukrainian "Cyborgs" who defended the airport.

When the book was being printed and published in Russian and Ukrainian, Sergei received many inquiries and requests to translate the novel into English. Most of these came from the members of the Ukrainian diaspora. They believe that the English-language readers will greatly benefit from reading the book as it explains many of the complexities of this ongoing conflict in the heart of Europe.

The funds raised through this project will cover the costs of translation of the novel into English. The total cost of the translation is $12,000 but we are asking for only $7,000 as a minimum to create the project. Our hope is that the project attracts a large number of backers to raise the full amount needed. We also hope that the backers who contribute to the project will share it with their friends and colleagues so that the project gets more supporters.

We have designed various levels of rewards so that all backers know that they "own" the final product, i.e. English translation of the book, and made it happen. While most of the rewards indicate February-March next year (2017) for delivery, it is only because publishing the book in English after the translation is completed will take time. We will give the backers an option of receiving the book in Russian or Ukrainian earlier if they so choose.

Our agency, Brave New Russian World, has helped the author to make the book available on Amazon in both Russian and Ukrainian, and in the first two days there, it shot up to #1 Hot New Release among foreign language books for both versions. You can browse through reader reviews for the Russian version. They show how significant this book's impact is: all reviews are 5 stars only!

We are happy to announce that Alexander Cigale is translating AIRPORT! Alex is one of the top American translators of poetry, whose work has appeared in many prestigious literary journals. He is a 2015 NEA Literary Translation Fellow whose first book, Russian Absurd: Selected Writings of Daniil Kharms, is forthcoming in 2017 from Northwestern University Press. We are confident that Sergei Loiko's AIRPORT, as translated by Alexander Cigale, will make a valuable contribution to the discourse on the Russia-Ukraine relationship in the West.

More information about the book in Russian and Ukrainian is available on the book's website: http://aeroportloiko.com

About the author: Sergei Loiko, reporter, photographer, translator, and writer, was born in Moscow in 1953. He served in the Soviet army and later earned a degree in philology. In 1989, Sergei became a translator and reporter for the Associated Press and later a producer for the British television company TV/am and contributed to Novaya Gazeta and Echo of Moscow radio. Sergei has covered armed conflicts, revolutions, and wars in Romania, Tajikistan, Chechnya, Georgia, Afghanistan, and Iraq. His documentary book Shock and Awe: The War in Iraq came out in 2003. For the past twenty-three years, Loiko has been the Moscow correspondent and photographer for the Los Angeles Times, specializing in wars and armed conflicts. In this time, he has written more than a thousand articles and published more than six hundred photographs, many of which have been reprinted in hundreds of newspapers and magazines around the world. Sergei covered the Ukrainian revolution and subsequent war virtually nonstop from the first day, 30 November 2013, until February 2015. In 2015, for his work on the war in Ukraine, Sergei Loiko was awarded one of the highest prizes in American journalism, the Overseas Press Club’s Bob Considine Award, “for its guts, credibility, originality, depth and sophistication of interpretation, and its engaging writing style.” This year, he was awarded the prestigious Los Angeles Times editorial award for “Best Reporting in 2014.” He now lives in Texas, USA, and Moscow.

Risks and challenges

If the project is successfully funded, the only challenge for the book to be published will be to find a reputable commercial publishing house that would be interested in printing and distributing the book. This is why we have delayed the project rewards with the book in English to next year. However, we will be working tirelessly to secure a publishing contract while the book is being translated to speed up the process and make it available earlier. We also promise to keep the backers constantly updated about the progress of publication.
