GHOSTWATCH - The drama that terrified a nation...
In 1992 director Lesley Manning and writer Stephen Volk first joined forces to make the ground-breaking BBC “Halloween” drama Ghostwatch, controversially made as if it were a live broadcast from a haunted house. It’s still remembered vividly by its fans 25 years from its inception, with articles this month in The New Statesman and Daily Telegraph, as well as on countless websites and blogs online.
Ghostwatch is a drama that constructed to be a live broadcast from a haunted house on Halloween night 1992. First and foremost the aim was to create a good ghost story for television as well as the ask the questions 'What do you believe in? What do you think? Who do you trust?.' Both Stephen & Lesley weren't prepared for the onslaught of madness that followed.
Ghostwatch caused a huge furore on its original transmission, jamming the switchboards at the BBC, even causing questions to be raised in Parliament – but to fans it was a high water mark in the genre. Many call it “legendary” in scaring them witless, but also call it one of the most remarkable and unique dramas the BBC has ever produced.
It has also recently been voted in the “Top 20 British Horror Films of All Time.”
Lesley and Stephen have both worked on many films and TV series since that fateful and incredible collaboration – and remained very close friends ever since – so the question is…
What are they making next?
“Extrasensory had a long gestation period, some of which was a lonely obsession, but once I showed the script to Lesley and she was as enthused by its possibilities as I was, it suddenly became alive and real” - Stephen Volk, screenwriter.
“Extrasensory is an extraordinary story. It’s universal and really touches your heart and it has this fantastic visual, epic backdrop, something I think Stephen is very good at, which is true, pure, gold-seamed drama” - Lesley Manning, director.
Our exciting creative team.
As well as Ghostwatch, Lesley Manning has directed the multi-award-winning film My Sisterwife and the BAFTA-nominated Drover’s Gold, as well as the play and film versions of The Agent, and Leila, winner of the Audience and Jury awards at the Austin Film Festival, now available on Amazon Prime. In 2013 she directed Honeycomb Lodge which won best film at the Delhi International Film Festival, and in 2016 her short Curtain Call showed at Cannes and was shortlisted at Fastnet Film Festival.
Stephen Volk is the BAFTA-winning writer of the award-winning ITV drama series Afterlife starring Andrew Lincoln and Lesley Sharp. His feature screenplays include The Awakening starring Rebecca Hall and Dominic West, Ken Russell's Gothic, The Guardian (co-written with director William Friedkin), and, ITV’s spooky and compelling mini-series Midwinter of the Spirit starring Anna Maxwell Martin and David Threlfall. He is also the author of three short story collections: Dark Corners, Monsters in the Heart (which won the British Fantasy Award in 2014) and, most recently, The Parts We Play.
Producers Debbie Gray and Myf Hopkins have many years combined experience in Film, Television and Music. Debbie produced BAFTA-nominated and award-winning Northern Soul, the debut feature film of Elaine Constantine and recently The More You Ignore Me, by Jo Brand, and starring Sheridan Smith. Myf joined Jim Henson's Creature Shop as a Producer, quickly rising to Head of Production. She oversaw the creation of animatronics, prosthetics, digital animation and visual effects on feature films, television and commercials including: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Tomb Raider II and Around the World in 80 Days, and the feature film Honeycomb Lodge directed by Lesley Manning.
We have also brought together some tremendous, brilliant heads of department, all raring to go….
Not least, the award winning, legendary composer Harry Gregson-Williams who has scored films such as The Martian (2014), all four films in the Shrek franchise, & The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) as well as Director of Photography, Gabriel Beristain who has shot countless feature films, most notably Blade II (2002), S.W.A.T (2003) & Blade: Trinity (2004).
“Extrasensory is one of those unique projects that any cinematographer would be delighted to be involved with. The immediate and extremely satisfactory reaction to the script is based on the fact that there is an intrinsic, evocative visual reference, embedded in every scene of the film. The images that the script inspires and requires are related to the soviet era iconography, reflected in the cultural and artistic demonstrations of the time including the architecture, the industrial design and the ideological propaganda, that produced endless samples some of them now absolutely iconic.” Gabriel Beristain, Director of Photography
