"When all in the world understand beauty to be beautiful, then ugliness exists; when all understand goodness to be good, then evil exists" - Lao Tzu
THE DESIGN: I move from the word to its opposite using only synonyms.
I take a word and take its SYNONYM, then I take the synonym and take its synonym (and so on). 13 words.
I hand drew each individual letter (several times) and created an original font that appears no where else but these shirts.
(These are Hanes Tshirts. If the funding is successful I will be able to print the shirts on better quality tshirts!)
VIDEO COMING SOON!!!GETTING A SHIRT
These shirts are all white with black font.
If the goal is reached, I will be able to screen print these designs on great quality (American Apparel, Next Level) tshirts. The designs can be printed on all sizes, on both crew and V-neck shirts.
"All things in their fundamental nature are not nameable or explicable, They cannot be adequately expressed in any form of language."- Ashvagosha
I like to think about words as sort of boxes that society has agreed upon to contain such or another meaning. Some words have a pretty definite definition. “PHONE” “WAVING” When we talk we use these “boxes” to communicate to each other an idea. The problem with such boxes is that we try to use them when communicating emotions and ideas that lack objectivity. Words that we developed as a way to communicate deeper feelings or emotion. Words such as Beauty, Happiness, Goodness.
But, what do these words really mean? To US? What do we mean by them when we use them to communicate with others?
The subjectivity of these words creates emptiness in these boxes. A VOID.
With these shirts I want to "reveal the void". I want people to think about the words I'm including (and the space left empty). Reveal the imperfection in the definitions that allows them to blend into each other and transition into its opposites. These imperfections are what make words, and their use in poetry and literature, "beautiful". Authors fill the void in such a way that speaks to us on a level that transcends the conscious meaning of the word.
If we wish to do the same, transcend the word, perhaps we should look to the void in the words. To the empty space.
"Form is emptiness, and emptiness is indeed form. Emptiness is not different from form, form is not different from emptiness. What is form that is emptiness, what is emptiness that is form" - Buddhist Sutra
