A new concept, modern materials and precision quality.
Our Elegant Solution
No nail nicks, buttons, thumb studs or holes in the blade to catch, snag on clothing or break nails. No accidental opening in your pocket or closing on your knuckles.
Introducing the Shadetree Maglock folding knife. Our first design is modeled on the traditional equal end jack knife, which we trust will be just the first of many designs using this new concept.
We have updated the swiveling handle concept last popularized by Barry Wood, and replaced various problematic lock schemes from the past and replaced them with rare earth permanent magnets.
Modern Materials, Patent Pending Design
For this first model made using our patent pending design, we chose anodized 7075 aluminum alloy for the body and S30V, a premium stainless steel hardened to 59- 60Rc for the blade. The media blasted blade is high saber ground to an almost zero grind to ensure a keen edge. All other parts are stainless steel with the exception of the nickel plated high strength neodymium rare earth magnets.
First Prototype Run
For this introductory run we had the 7075 aluminum handles uniquely anodized in blue or green, then laser marked with our modified "Acorn" Made in the Shade logo, First Prototype Run, and a unique number on each knife.
Safe and simple operation
No nail nicks, buttons, thumb studs or holes in the blade to to catch, snag on clothing or break nails. No accidental opening in your pocket or closing on your knuckles. Easy opening with one or both hands.
Based on an old but little known design, the split handle jack knife operates differently from most other folding knives. The handles split and pivot in opposite directions to alternately stow and expose the blade. Previous swing handle designs used some mechanical means of locking the knife in the open and closed positions. Some relied on external hasps or clasps that could grab or snag and others used difficult to make and fit internal engagements.
Not only made in the USA, but locally and precisely constructed
We feel local is the way to go. Our home town of Jackson Michigan is an established center of manufacturing and after approaching many local precision manufacturers with our design, we chose Main and Company. They were not the most competitive bidder among the number of local manufacturers we met with but they impressed us with a can do attitude and a genuine interest in our project and we look forward to working with them on future projects.
Classic Metal Finishing and Mid Michigan Laser also in Jackson gave us great service in anodizing and marking. Both were helpful and easy to work with and we expect to do more work with them again soon.
Our Ultimate Goal . . .
Is to create a new American knife company and offer a a complete line of knives based on the Shadetree Maglock concept, from "Ladies and Gentlemen" personal folders to bushcraft and hunting knives as well as other tools.

Risks and challenges
Project Acorn, first prototype run
We are taking on most of the risk on this first run. The first run of knives are complete and the sili-pint glasses are here. They will be packed and ready to ship ASAP after funds are released and shipping labels printed.
If not funded, we will investigate alternate avenues to sell the first run of knives.
Stretch Goals, Production run
As a stretch goal, we hope to fund and produce a second run with a tentative ship date of September 30th. These will be in black anodize or titanium with some additional options, including lanyard tabs and pocket clips.
Shadetree Custom Composites is an established company with a history of doing what it takes to make happy customers. We wish to continue that history and want to commit Shadetree Knifeworks to that standard.
