If the optics were focused like a flashlight, this much light would be incredibly painful for any pedestrian/car that happens to get caught in your overly focused 10degree beam. Additionally, a focused beam doesn't allow for anyone to notice you outside that narrow beam. This is how many other bike lights are designed and it is the opposite of what we have designed for. Overly powerful focused beams do very little to increase your own visibility.
By diffusing and spreading the high quantity of lumens throughout the custom optics in our lights, you will end up with a vibrant and intense glow around you visible from any angle. These lights are designed to match the light quantity and light distribution of car lights. Since we share the road with cars at night, we need to match the illumination they have so that we can be best noticed on the road.
A modern LED car tail light can be up near 300 Lumens with no focused beam. However, Lumens are only a measurement of total light output (not intensity). The Flares are actually more intense than a car tail light since they are smaller, but still have the same amount of light.
Daytime LED running lights are less standardized in terms of their Lumen quantity, but with High mode one, your bike will appear much like a modern car on the road during the day or early evening. Then at night, Medium or Low will provide longer run times since eyes take in more light when dilated.
