THANKS FOR DYING PRESS AND BUZZ!!
Laurence was asked to write an article on FilmCourage.com to discuss the filmmaking process for THANKS FOR DYING! Check it out here for exclusive behind-the-scenes stories!
THANKS FOR DYING was featured on "Kickstart This" a weekly column by Ben Pearson on FirstShowing.net, alongside "Police Warfare" (inspired by Michael Mann's film Heat) and "Tube", an open souce animated film! Check out the article!!
About The Film
THANKS FOR DYING is an improv-driven “mockumentary” feature film that follows the antics of three misfit production companies as they prepare trailers for their overly ridiculous film ideas ("Double Dynamite", "Soy Identities", and "Hot Wacky Blood: The Love Apocalypse") to pitch to a major film studio. These production companies each have three or four extremely odd yet somewhat likeable characters who each have a misplaced sense of ego for their work that you have to see to believe. If you’ve seen the shows, “Arrested Development” or “The Office”, you’re in the ballpark.
Here is a sneak peek of one of the incredi-bad trailers that is revealed to the studio towards the end of the film:
Will the studio go for their ideas? Observing their journey and seeing just how awesome-ridiculous their trailers become is just as entertaining as one could hope for.
Thanks For Dying was filmed in 14 days with a highly-trained improv troupe and a veteran, documentary-style film crew. Shot in areas all over Los Angeles county (including an abandoned mental hospital), the result was a film that captures a unique and fresh humor while jabbing a mocking finger at Hollywood and the entertainment culture. Post-production finished in early January and the film is almost ready to enter the market.

What We’re Doing
Now that the film is almost ready, we need your help to get it out into the world! We’ll be entering the film into festivals across the nation in order to generate an audience and get it picked up by a distributor! We’re offering a chance to become a part of the road-trip tour while experiencing multiple film festivals across the country. For those that have always wondered how independent films go from creation to your home or the big screen, this is a fun opportunity to experience the film festival circuit alongside a great film you helped get there!
Who We Are
To put it simply, we are two independent filmmakers who eat, drink and breathe filmmaking. We started by making a short film telling the true stories of Cuban refugees fleeing Cuba during Castro’s takeover in the late 1960’s, which ran in over 20 festivals worldwide.
What’s So Fun About The Film Festival Circuit?
Glad you asked. Do you like to watch films? Do you like exciting competitions where you get to root for a project you helped get off the ground? Are you yourself a filmmaker or aspiring filmmaker that wants to get more exposure? Most importantly - do you like to PARTY?
If you answered “umm, YES!” to any of these questions, then you’re going to love this ride. These festivals are a combo of experiencing brand new films and fun parties that put you right in the middle of the art of independent filmmaking and the people that find a way to make it happen every day. Our plan is for the film to travel to multiple festivals over the course of the summer, fall and winter of 2012.
How Your Pledges Will Be Used
Every cent of your pledges will be used to pay for the final finishing sound and FX touches, as well as get the film submitted to festivals across the country. These festivals require a submission fee as well as promotional materials for the film if it is selected to be a part of their competition. If selected, the film will be screened in front of audiences from all shapes and sizes of the film industry, including reviewers, press, distributors and most importantly, our target audience! These people will all be fundamental in the film reaching the next stage: a distribution deal that will ensure the film is seen in homes and possibly even theaters nationwide!
Where Will These Festivals Be?
We are submitting to festivals nationwide, with a focus on festivals in metropolitan California, New York and Chicago. We have specifically targeted festivals in these areas as our target audience is most represented in these locations.
Attending The Festivals
We will be updating you on our festival submissions and progress. Once the film has been confirmed in a festival, we will forward all information you will need about the festival and most importantly, what time our film is going to be screened. We will continue to update you with each and every festival your pledges help the film into.
Will I Get To See The Film Before A Festival?
ABSOLUTELY! We will be hosting a screening and party for all of our fantastic pledge donors after we’ve reached our funding amount. Location and date TBD – or if you choose, you can wait to see the film for the first time in one of the festivals! For those that DO want to see it beforehand and have a celebratory drink with the filmmakers, we will be having this party at the beginning of this coming summer.
What’s In The Digital Download Package?
Everyone who donates at least $10 will receive our digital download package. This will include the following:
-Thanks For Dying movie promotional material. Poster, wallpaper and “Behind The Scenes” photos
- A video from the Producer, telling the story of the creation of this film
- Official Thanks For Dying promotional trailer
Can I Gift An Incentive?
YES! Spectacular idea. If you would like to donate to the film but give the reward to someone as a gift, go through all the normal process of making a donation in your name. For billing purposes, this action must be in your name. After our deadline, we will send a message to you on Kickstarter. (It will be forwarded to the email address you provided) We will request things like your t-shirt size and address from you at that time. Please reply with all the person’s information that is to receive the reward. We will make sure they are the person who receives the reward.
Once The Film Gets Distribution, When Will It Release?
The plan is to have the movie release sometime in the beginning of 2013. Rest assured all of us involved will make sure YOU know when it’s due to release.
How Will Laurence Get My Number? How Will You Get My T-Shirt Size?
If you are donating, you will get a message from Laurence pretty soon requesting your phone number and T-shirt size. Please reply to him. He has a lovely phone voice, and he wants to thank you over the phone personally.
Once we cross our deadline (May 27) we will immediately begin manufacturing and completing incentives for everyone involved. You will get a message from us requesting information from you like your T-shirt size, address, etc. At that time, please reply to us as soon as possible so that we can complete your incentive.
Can I Increase My Pledge Once It’s Been Made?
YES! Once you donate to our campaign, you may want to change your incentive reward to a different one, or increase your pledge amount. To do so, go to Kickstarter and sign in. If you go to our campaign page, the green “Back This Project” button has been replaced with a blue “Manage Your Donation” button. Click it and you can enter a new amount, or choose a new incentive.
What Happens If The Money Isn’t Raised In Time?
Unfortunately, nothing. If our goal isn’t met before the deadline, no money changes hands and the film can’t move forward. We want to avoid this scenario at all cost!
With that in mind, feel free to help us spread the word! Talk about it, post about it and point people to our Kickstarter page!
Can We Exceed The Goal?
YES! What an amazing problem to have. Kickstarter will allow as much money as is given before the deadline. We have a whole plan outlined for Marketing and PR efforts in case of additional funding, all focused on building more buzz and spreading the word. More fuel could mean bigger and bigger goals for this film... AND much bigger, incredible rewards we have yet to reveal!
How Do We Contact You?
Glad you asked! You can contact us directly at email@example.com. We check it. We will get back to you. We promise!
Is The Film A 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Entity?
Unfortunately the film is not set up as a non-profit. Donations are raw gifts. Non-tax deductible.
If I Donate, When Can I Redeem The Incentive?
All incentives, big and small, will only happen if our goal is met. If we do meet our goal, immediately after our deadline we will start to manufacture and ship all physical merch directly to you. It will be our priority to schedule the more personal incentives as soon as possible. You will hear from us. (More on this as we get closer to our deadline)
Any Other Questions?
Just ask us. We’re here for you. Hi-five.
