The Vikings from Norway, Sweden and Denmark assemble a line of figurines with a rough culture known for being great merchants but even more for their ruthless raiding campaigns and excellent fighting techniques. The Vikings have strong roots in Norse mythology, and their Gods are not deaf to calls from the battle field.
The English knights and men at arms, desperate defenders of the English soil standing strong against the onslaught of Viking raids. Known for fealty to their lords and houses, honor dies with them until their final breath. Being well equipped with the latest technology in warfare, they present a strong line of defense against the invading Vikings.
Figurines are divided into specific classes, each one with its own unique ability cards and stats that make them behave differently on the battlefield. Before you enter a battle board it’s a good idea to balance your lineup of miniature figurines as you consider the particular challenge that awaits you. There are different ways to influence a Viking’s base stats, thanks to the selection of available weapons and armor pieces to outfit your group, not to mention the experience points they can get from battle to improve their overall stats.
Each figurine class has a set of ability cards that will be unlocked as he/she obtains more experience points to level up. Each figurine can have one ability card assigned at a time - so choose wisely! After using an ability card it will have cool-down period before the ability is ready to be used again (to avoid exploits). Powerful and deadly attacks, a much needed defense boost, a jump in speed for a set number of moves and more are available thanks to ability cards – time them right and they could save your life!
Battle Boards are levels you’ll get to play in WARTILE. These are hex-based miniature landscapes that give the feeling of playing on a real modeled game board brought to life. Each Battle Board will shine with animations, sounds, and effects that will create a magic blend between a realistic model and a digital fantasy landscape. Each game board is created around a visual theme - for example: sunny grass fields, rough stormy coastlines or cold snowy mountains. Each theme amplifies the gameplay experience for each board.
When a player completes a Battle Board there is a chance that it will unlock a new version of said diorama. What will this new version bring? You’ll get to experience the same setting but with a modified visual appearance, a tweak on the gameplay experience and objectives as well as a noticeable increase in difficulty, because if you’ve beaten this Battle Board before then you’re probably skilled enough to complete a greater challenge, don’t you agree?
And then we have Challenge Boards. Challenge Boards are a completely different beast while still giving you that WARTILE experience you seek. Each Challenge Board will present a specific experience or quest for the player to complete, and their difficulty will be greater than that of the story Battle Boards. These will be unique boards separate from those in the story mode, offering you extra content that when completed might unlock new Godly or Tactical cards to your collection or reward you with special weapons or armor pieces for your group.
Timing is key, and it will be the difference between life and death for your collection of loyal figurines! In combat there are a few simple rules that you must understand in order to greatly increase your chance for success.
Figurine cool-down is triggered every time a unit is moved or when it engages in combat. The cool-down prevents you from moving the figurine for a few seconds, but it’s still possible to use its ability cards. This is long enough as to keep players from spamming the same figurines over and over but short enough to keep this rooted in real-time strategy territory.
Something else to consider is that having the high ground makes you a harder target to hit, while flanking the enemy makes them an easier target for your attacks.
Pay attention to who fights who in the fray of battle. Position units with shields and high defense stats and skills so that they can take most of the hits from the enemies with the biggest axes, heaviest swords and shorter tempers. Also, do pay attention to the movement speed of each individual unit, because speed matters in WARTILE. Additionally, the height and material of the surface for each environment tile will also inflict movement modifiers to figurines walking on them.
By combining figurines battle styles, ability cards, movement ranges and buffs, you are able to make strong tactical and strategic decisions as the battle evolves.
In WARTILE, nobody is alone, because with Action Cards you are able to call the favors of the Gods or apply the Tactical traits of your cultural theme to the battle at hand. Action cards are a strong element in the game that can potentially change the tide of the battle if used wisely at the right place and at the right time.
Before each match you can assemble a deck of action cards, and during the battle three random cards will be drawn from your selected deck and into your hand. Every time you play a card, it will be consumed and replaced by a new random card taken from your deck. However, you can’t just activate them in exchange for nothing, because you have to earn this power as it fueled by a resource called Battle Points. You earn Battle Points by completing mini-objectives like converting relics, takin control of specific points in the board or by killing enemies.
This means that you can influence, but not specifically choose, what cards are drawn into your hand, so that you may better make the best of the situation you are in, and plan ahead for any and all possible scenarios for the battle that you are about to enter.
With a wide selection of different armor pieces and weapons to unlock you will be able to customize the look and stats of of figurines.
Would you like your whole band wearing the Armor of the Winter Wolf? Or maybe you favor the lighter variation of the Grizzly bear. Throughout your journey in WARTILE, new armor sets and types of weapons, shields and sigils will be unlocked, bringing more variety to the game and an extra layer of customization for you to find the right combination to survive.
We also have some Kickstarter Exclusive sigils, armor pieces, weapons and figurine skins as a thank you to those of you who pledge to support WARTILE at the corresponding levels, so that you can show to the world that you believe in WARTILE and helped to make it become a reality! And yes, Kickstarter Exclusive means that only those who pledge for the Kickstarter will have a shot at getting them for their copy of the game!
Challenge friends or peers to a multiplayer one vs. one match in one of our Multiplayer Boards! These have been specially designed to create a competitive arena with different game modes you can enjoy, meaning they offer a different experience from the Battle Boards and Challenge Boards in the game.
With WARTILE we really want to create a different multiplayer experience from the common competitive game modes you might have played on other real-time strategy releases. We’re still presenting a competitive experience but with an extra layer of narrative and motivation that showcases the why and the how you are going to take on a multiplayer session. For example, the Viking team might need to pillage an English city and kidnap some of its villagers while the English team is tasked with protecting the area and pushing the Vikings back into the sea. During the battle, the figurines from both sides will explore and learn more about their location, finding tomes of lore here and there as they advance in each Multiplayer Board, and these can be later read at the Library section as to not take your attention away from the action on screen.
The music for WARTILE is a very important element that complements the onscreen action with powerful songs that help battles feel alive. Music helps to immerse players into the universe we're building, and it will sometimes signal the impending bloodshed.
Check out a preview music track below, and be ready for us to talk more about the music for WARTILE in one of our project updates.
WARTILE is set in medieval fantasy universe, where greed and personal ambitions cast their shadow over life, and define the destiny of many - by the hands of few. As cultures clash in a constant battle of survival over power and dominance, the red line of history is painted across snowy mountains, stormy oceans and distant country sides, as seen by the eyes of the many figurines in the game.
Our first Campaign showcases the Vikings. The desperate King sits in his great hall, eyes focused upon the map in front of him, knowing that the tide is changing, loyalties are shifting, and that his power is waning. With one last effort he has sent forth sons and loyal warriors to summon the great Viking tribes of Scandinavia to rally them together for a run to conquer England. Figurines are moving to war as lands are divided. Will you have the skills to bring the Viking tribes to reason, and lead this ambitious conquest all the way to the coasts of England, or will your efforts be in vain?
With WARTILE, we hope to be able to grow the platform with a series of expansions that provide new content for players. We have many plans for WARTILE, but these plans require extra funding, which is why we’ll discuss them as stretch goals once we’re closer to the main goal. What would these stretch goals include? Perhaps new Viking figurines for the game, new Battle Boards, extra skills for figurines or more action cards! And there’s also major plans for a lot of extra content that would basically double the size of WARTILE, but that is a talk for another day.
The higher we can get WARTILE to climb past its main goal, here on Kickstarter, the bigger and better the game will be for all of you. Together, we can make a bigger and better game!
And along with those we’ve mentioned above, we are also joined by 3D character artist Kaushik Sara, 3D Environment artist Jonas Ronnegard, Technical artist Iulian Drug and Concept artist Chris Whelan, who every day help us to create outstanding content for WARTILE.
Risks and challenges
Developing video games is a very time consuming activity, but one we are used to thanks to our experience working on huge and high profile video game releases. We've worked for several years on WARTILE to take it where it is today, and once funded we'll expand on it in order to realize our vision.
If we ever end up running into the need to delay the game in order to polish things up and improve WARTILE so that it becomes the best game it can be, you'll be sure we'll communicate this to our backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
