Before I Die is a global, community-oriented public art project that invites people to reflect on their lives and share their personal aspirations in public space. The original wall was created on an abandoned house in New Orleans by artist and urban planner Candy Chang.
Since then, passionate residents have created walls in their own communities and now more than 100 walls have been created in over 10 languages and in over 30 countries, including Kazakhstan, Argentina, Korea, Italy, Australia, Germany, and South Africa. It's time to bring this to the Magic City.
The wall is a positive civic engagement project that will help Birminghamians remember what is important to us, understand our neighbors in new and enlightening ways, and improve the well-being of our community and ourselves. The project has been featured on NBC, CNN, TED, and Oprah Magazine.
We are going to build this wall near Regions Field in downtown Birmingham. In the fall, we plan to partner with REV Birmingham to turn it into a traveling exhibit that will make appearances in neighborhoods all around the Birmingham metro area.
We’ve got a plan, but we need your help to make it happen. Our goal is aggressive: to raise $2,000 in two weeks. Please back us however you can, tell your family and friends about this project, and when the wall opens, come out and share your dreams with the rest of the Magic City. Thank you.
Risks and challenges
Once funded, there is a very low risk of this project not happening. We've already secured permission from the building owner and found a licensed contractor to do the work. Our only outstanding item is the city sign permit, however we are already working with the right officials to get approval through the appropriate channels in time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
