We've been working mega hard and have a lot to show you! We have been contemplating different ideas for a stretch goal, streamlining our production process, and collecting informal orders (don't worry if you haven't received an email or message from us yet). Before we dive deeper, all of us at Prima Coastal would like to thank our 379 backers for the $23,087 they have raised. Here's a little something we want to throw into the mix!
If we hit a crowdfunding total of $25,000, every backer will receive a second key chain UV flashlight. We spent a lot of time designing lava rock necklaces, bracelets, and even other rings, but no idea seemed to fit into our production schedule or budget without disrupting the process; and we definitely don't want to bite off more than we can chew. We decided that these handy lights are so good at charging our Ignite! rings, that we wanted to make sure your's will stay lit for twice as long, for FREE once we hit 25k! We hope to amp up our equipment and workshop after completion of this campaign to bring a much wider assortment of products to our brand, and we thank you again so much for the support to help us get started on that.
Thanks to hundreds of our backers, we reached our goal in under one day. We can't express how ecstatic we are to bring these rings to life. We spent some time mapping out how we're going to produce several hundred rings. Here's a calendar:
With this schedule, we can create over 1000 rings by the original, April 2018, shipping date we had set in place. If, in the event that we reach a quantity of rings we can't produce as a small team, we will be more than pleased pick up a few members! We have a lot of offers for help coming our way, and would love to put them to work :)
Forged from Lava
Our Ignite! rings are made with lava rock. We chose lava rock as an experimental material in our ring making process. We have worked with various metals, polymers, and resins, but wanted something new. Lava rock was an early choice thanks to our visits to volcanoes and black sand beaches in Hawaii. The natural coloration and texture of lava rock seemed a little too perfect not to try.
It took some experimentation to get the consistency just right, but after a few tries we found a method that works. Molds were made using an original polymer mixture and the broken down lava rock. We call these Lava Stones.
We shaped them to size using drills and lathes, then attached them to a glow core. The fit has to be just right, but with accurate molds and tools we made it work!
After a little bit of refining...
Glow Cores are Lit!
Our Ignite! glow cores are forged from our original polymer mixture and phosphorescent glow material.
Our cores glow in six different colors, and can be charged by sunlight or a UV flashlight. The colors we chose for the glow cores contrast the lava rock extremely well, providing a look similar to lava underneath a bed of lava rock. The glow is meant to last. Since our polymer is infused with the phosphorescent glow material, it will last the entire life of the ring.
The Hidden Layer
Our rings aren't only meant to look sleek and feel great... they're also meant to last. To make sure that our rings last in any of life's situations, we added an extra material between the glow core and lava stone to provide an immense increase in strength; raw carbon fiber.
We originally had two methods for strengthening our rings. We first tossed around the idea of using a block of carbon fiber, and shaping it to fit the ring. We found that this method would waste more material and be much harder to work with. Raw carbon fiber provided us with a few advantages. First, we can apply it with little to no waste. Second, it doesn't affect the thickness of the final product. Finally, it provides a big boost to the strength of the ring.
Final Product and Rewards
Once we figured out how to make a glowing ring with the look of lava rock and the strength of carbon fiber, we went straight to the drawing boards. We wanted to create a couple of simple yet elegant designs. The V1 model incorporates a lava rock band that is sanded and polished to a smooth finish. The core glows in one of six colors, shown in the image above.
Our second design features a similar concept, but with an added level of intricacy. We decided to cut a groove into the lava rock band and insert an inlay. These inlays are colored the same six colors that our cores glow.
The inlay on our Ignite! V2 rings took some time to perfect. Not only did we want the inlay to highlight the lava rock, we wanted it to glow too. First, we experimented with our phosphorous polymer mixture, but the outcome had us reshaping the ring too often. It didn't look too pretty either... Then, we brainstormed materials that would save us time, allow a vibrant color in daylight with a bright glow at night. We stumbled across quartz sand and thought we'd give it a try. We added dye and phosphorescent material to the quartz, laid it into our Ignite! rings, and voila... a beautiful inlay in the light, and a glowing band at night.
Our V3 model was designed for those who want more than one color of glow. The color of the glow in the inlay and core can be customized between any of our six colors.
How can you help?
A simple question with a simple answer. One way is to back us. Simply choose the pledge you want to back us with, and we match it with a reward. The more backers we have, the more materials we can buy, and the quicker we can get to production. Another way to help is by sharing this to your friends and on your social medias. Let them know that kickstarter is the earliest and cheapest way to get our Ignite! rings. We can't thank you enough for the support you give, and can't wait to send you your reward!
We plan to launch our campaign Tuesday, January 16, and end it in 30 days. Once we reach our goal, we want to show our gratitude by using our own funds to immediately start production. We plan to make them first come, first serve. We can not thank you enough for all of the support and can't wait to ship out all of your rewards! You are our top priority!
Your donation will be a great help, and we plan to put it to good use. First, we plan to use it for the materials and labor required to make our product. Any extra donation funds go towards advancing our business with newer tools, parts, and hopefully a more official work space. We look forward to sending out your rings, and we are grateful to our backers to help us accomplish our goal.
Risks and challenges
As with any endeavor, there are countless obstacles that must be overcome to guarantee success . With over two dozen prototypes created, we have taken the precautionary methods to guarantee the highest quality construction and aesthetic appeal in ours rings. Extensive research has been done to ensure that we have chosen the best materials for our design. Costs have been accounted for and it is our hope that any extra money will help to expand our project and create new ideas. Depending on the success of our project and the number of backers, the time frame for delivery could potentially be increased or decreased.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
