When we were young we loved going to the movies. We would watch in amazement as colorful characters lit up the big screen. And when we got home, we would act out the scenes we had just witnessed.
But our relationship with film changes as we grow up. As we get older, it's not enough to just watch a film. We want to connect with a film...we want to get lost in a film...to somehow become a part of the film. Even if we're just an extra in the background.
Film is unlike any other art. It's not ephemeral like theater or live music, and it doesn't just capture a single moment like a photo or a painting. It is a living, enduring portrait of us. When we sit down to watch a film -- a good film or a challenging film -- we are moved by what we see. Our heart races as the hero narrowly escapes death, we cower in our seats when the villain is just around the corner, and we cry when two lovers finally find one another. We return time after time, and we allow cinema to move us and change us.
That's the experience that film brings us...and it makes us into better people.
And so we want to bring PUSH! Film Festival to Bristol, TN/VA – we want to give people in our region the gift of film and all that film brings us.
PUSH! Film Festival is a first-year event that will take place on the weekend of June 12—14, 2015 in bustling Historic Downtown Bristol, TN/VA. As a celebration of the cinematic and visual arts in the heart of the twin cities of Bristol, the festival will bring diverse films to our community and showcase the best regional filmmakers. PUSH! aims to expand the artistic image of our region, engage new audiences in the world of film, and inspire creativity in all of us. The festival will play host to exciting parties and meet-ups for filmmakers and audience members alike. PUSH! will offer something for people of all ages; you won't want to miss this unique cultural experience!
How you can help:
For the past several months, a growing committee of dedicated film lovers has been working hard to make PUSH! a reality. Our members represent diverse and unique factions, all deeply invested in this project and our community. We've been reaching out all across our region, making connections with community and business leaders, other arts organizations, and potential supporters. In addition to the support already volunteered by our community leaders, we have been gifted a little seed money that has enabled us to secure a couple of the venues and will help with some of the initial costs.
The support we've received so far has been great! But we need YOUR help in order to produce a truly special event. The money you pledge will be integral to our success as it will help fund the fundamentals of the PUSH! Film Festival, including:
- The films that we bring in – from classics and indies to documentaries and dramas.
- A film competition with a variety of categories, including ones dedicated to Tennessee and Virginia filmmakers, and related competition prizes
- Quality Q&As, talks, and demonstrations about film and behind-the-scenes
- Upgraded equipment at a couple of the venues (a long-term investment!)
Our vision for PUSH! is for it to become an annual event that grows each year. We want this film festival to be a real investment in the creative economy of our community, and for it to become a thriving attraction that brings new visitors, new ideas, and new opportunities to our region.
With your help – and with the backing of our community – we can make PUSH! into a reality and a success. So please take a moment to consider how you can help financially support this festival. Even a little bit goes a long way, and we have some great rewards for your contribution. Please share PUSH! with your friends, coworkers, family, and neighbors and ask them to support this great project – and ask them to get excited about the festival and share it with their networks too!
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch this video and learn about our vision. With your help, we can celebrate the magic and wonder of cinema, and give the gift of film to our region through the PUSH! Film Festival.

Risks and challenges
As with any first year project we have a lot of ground work to put in place before we can light up the screens. Moving forward we must ensure that all of our venues are equipped with the right tools and volunteers to make this festival a success. With your support and that of the community through this Kickstarter we will be able to provide our locations with everything they need.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
