About

Design Philosophy   

We have combined the versatile abilities of the 3D Delta printer with a superior rigid and simple construction built around an interchangeable effector/head. You are not limited to only printing high-resolution 3D objects in ABS and PLA plastics. We also have the modules to extrude wet materials (composite resin paste, carbon nano paste, ceramics and food). This sounds like a lot for one 3D Delta printer but by designing the most rigid Delta structure to date, it gives us the opportunity to branch out into multiple media.

Design Progression

Two years ago we were experimenting building 3D Delta printers in our robotics shop. After several iterations it became clear that the majority of these designs, although quite capable, most had the same shortfall of lack of rigidity. The lack of rigidity affects the Delta printer in several areas. We were also frustrated by the high parts count and the complexity of setting up the printer accurately. We initially produced a total of five different design variations before we came up with a simplified yet extremely rigid, easy to assemble design. The major portion of the printer can be assembled in less than 15 - 30 minutes (not counting the electronics).

Why does the Delta need to be rigid?  

By having a completely rigid structure you can carry heavier loads on the effector head without having problems of flexibility in the printer components. If you were to carry a peristaltic pump or an extruder head with geared stepper motor on a regular Delta you would have noticeable problems with vibration and tower shake/movement especially at higher speeds.

Simplicity by design

 A lot of effort went into this design to simplify assembly without sacrificing rigidity or strength. All of our parts are matched hole technology produced on our CNC equipment. This means the design starts in SolidWorks and goes directly into the milling machine to accurately and precisely drill the alignment holes in both the upper and lower Can segments and the Makersslide rails at the same time. The structural components are built out of heavy aircraft grade aluminum. Next they are spun on a CNC metal spinning machine to a precise shape and size. Because of this method no complicated alignment is necessary, our design can literally be put together in 15 - 30 min even by a beginner (major structure). 

UV LED array, Paste Extruder and Console

During the development we also came up with a process that allows a standard 3D printer to extrude composite matrix paste. It is similar to what we do with ABS and PLA (FDM) but it has completely different properties because we use UV cured epoxy and other composite resins. This opens up a complete new world of possibilities. We can extrude with a fine nozzle (2mm) all the way up to 10mm. The curing starts as soon as the composite matrix comes out of the nozzle. So this doesn't limit the height because of sagging or collapse due to the extruded material not being able to support its own weight. What's the advantage to composite matrix extrusion? It's all about the material properties of the composite. Some of these composite resins are extremely chemically resistant and structurally far superior to ABS and PLA. There's also the opportunity to add reinforcement material such as carbon nano-tubes and many other composite microfibers to the matrix mixture. This means that some of the components can actually be finished structural working parts for high stress applications in extremely corrosive environment. Imagine printing to any height with no limitations, the only limitation is how big you want to build the printer.

Clay Extruder

3D printing clay is at its infancy and we have developed a fully controllable peristaltic pump extrusion system. This gives us the ability to not only extrude different types of clay but to control the speed on the fly and to stop and start the extrusion during the printing process. So you're not limited to producing simple vases, now you can extrude more complicated designs similar to FDM PLA.

 This is what's really unique about our products. Our printer is strong enough to carry the weight of 400 ml (1 pint) reusable paste container on top of the geared stepper motor and effector Head. Additionally we have two systems for containing the paste our 400 (34 oz) and the other one is the 1000 ml which is mounted in the top of the printer. This gives you the ability for commercial or large scale continuous printing of food or clay.

Food Extruder

With ZAGI-18 and our unique peristaltic pump arrangement there's no need for syringes or high pressure air assist for extruding food. Our peristaltic pump is driven by a high precision geared stepper motor which controls the pump completely in both directions. This means we can stop the print and start it at any time and also reverse before we lift the nozzle, producing cleaner prints. So now we can print food similar to printing PLA FDM plastic, you can go as high as you like as long as your material will support itself. Speaking of materials, this unpressurized arrangement is capable of extruding materials like cake icing and confectionery products that are not too thick. We also have a pressurized arrangements for higher volume professional work if needed. We utilize certified medical grade tubing for our pump assembly. This assures our customers that the printed material is food safe with no contaminants from our mechanism. The pump is easy to clean after disassembly, the tubing can be discarded or cleaned with dish washing liquid.

 
 

Our second goal for the Delta style printers was getting away from the standard Bowden style extruder and its shortcomings. With the Stepextruder mounted on the effector it is a much better choice for accurate printing. But in the past this meant heavy assemblies which affected the performance of the Deltas to the negative. By concentrating on keeping the weight to a minimum we now have all of the advantages of on-board Stepextruder.

History

We have a long history of many businesses behind us with customer satisfaction being our top priority. We come from not only a robotics background but also from composites all the way up to complete aircraft manufacturing facility.

Our design and engineering experience is stretching back 4 decades and three generations. We have the ability to produce a superior structure for the Delta platform. Our facility is unique in equipment; we have aircraft quality CNC machines for rapid prototyping, production and custom robotics. What we learned from the aircraft manufacturing was that the matched-hole technology is the only way to produce a rigid structure while maintaining extreme accuracy during the assembly. Our entire Delta platform is manufactured on CNC equipment and all of the machine and hole drilling is performed on the CNC machines. 

In the near future we will be able to produce a large-scale Delta platforms for extruding not only food and clay type materials but also structural composite and other structural materials.

Risks and challenges

There is always some risk in business but we believe the risk factor of our project is very low for several reasons.
We don't use any external vendors for the main structure, almost all of the machining and manufacturing is done in-house with our own CNC machines. We have already run a small production run for testing and finalizing cost structure, so we know it's feasible and we know the cost. Organizational risk is very low, our family has been in business for over 35 years and we're excited to kick off this project.
We believe we can keep to our estimated schedule and there shouldn't be any delivery delays.
