The Gilded Age is about a group of performers, the Branning Troupe. Half actors and half carnival folk, the group travels throughout the countries of Victorian Era Europe. For some it offers a direction to their lives, others get the adoration of the crowds, and the rest find simple refuge from a world which has cast them out.
The plan for The Gilded Age came from an image of a western style gunfighter with a mechanical arm. Immediately my mind started scrambling with thoughts of a Steampunk world approaching a crossroads of not only technology and magic but of the direction the world would take. Amongst that loose backdrop, I set the characters of Hanna and Elias on a mission to save King and country.
However, that is the type of plan which requires a readership. In this day and age to ask potential readers to buy into an unknown story/creator is a difficult proposition. To hope that they stick around for a four-issue story-arc... I wasn't sure.
I rethought the plan, reworked the story, and came up with something bigger, yet easier to digest. Each story would be done-in-one. They would tell stories that could be enjoyed by anyone picking up a random issue. The issues would have overlapping characters, but by and large, each issue would focus on one or a pair of characters.
The key would be that I was slowly building up my world. And making the readers care about various characters by giving each the screen time they deserved. And by doing this I allowed for different types of stories within the same world. Whether that is Western or Horror or a Heist or something Fantastical, the hope has always been to build the world from the character's eyes rather than try and hit you with one thousand years of history.
We've collected all four issues into this Volume One with an amazing brand new cover from La'Vata O'Neal.
We are raising funds primarily to get this full Graphic Novel, The Gilded Age: Volume One, printed.
The book is finished. Complete. 100 total pages including all 4 covers and original artist sketches.
All we literally need to do is raise funds for copies of the collected graphic novel, get the finished copy to the printer, and get the book to readers, new and old. In addition to this, we're hoping to use these same funds to begin to get the books into a variety of locations, including future conventions, comic book stores, book stores, and libraries.
Thank you for taking the time to view the project. I'm excited for the opportunity to share The Gilded Age with you.
Risks and challenges
While this is the first Gilded Age Kickstarter, I was highly involved in the Route 3 Kickstarter, and have learned a lot by going through that process.
There should be very little risk as the book is done and ready to go to print.
Digital rewards will be sent a couple of days after the Kickstarter ends. While we've anticipated getting the print books sent out as soon as we receive them, we know that there can be bumps in that road - so we've set that target for April 2018.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
