About this project
Welcome to Natalie Rhea Productions' new Kickstarter Campaign! Thank you for your incredible support and helping us bring this film to life. Kickstarter is all or nothing, meaning that we will need to meet our pledge goal by March 1, 2014 or the funds will be returned.
About The Film
“Raining Fire: What Lies Beneath The Ashes” is an independent documentary by Natalie Rhea, which follows the repercussions of the 2011 Bastrop fires - the worst wildfire(s) in Texas history.
The soil that lies beneath Bastrop County is poisoned. Car fumes, chemicals and other hazardous materials which burned in the flames were carried into the soil, washed deeper by rainwater, and absorbed by smoke. Thriving gardens full of nutritious fruits and vegetables are now considered toxic for consumption. Trees cut down and processed into mulch are saturated with oils that hinder both plant fertility and the health of the soil - yet are sold back into surrounding communities and abroad! Additionally, as mother earth cycles naturally to replenish her ecosystem, the steps human inhabitants are taking only hurt and hinder the process.
“In a moment the ashes are made, but a forest is a long time growing.”
Furthermore, over 2 years have passed since the disaster and there are still many displaced families. Both government agencies and non-profit organizations have hands readily available and millions of dollars in grants and donations to aid in rebuilding. However, fewer families become eligible to meet qualifications as stipulations associated with this funding continue to rise.
Over 45% of the homes destroyed have income below the poverty line.
Money that is donated to help families, who do not "qualify," is then diverted to the county to do with as they please. Corporations that have made donations to these organizations have not been distributed. Homeowners that have found access to funds are further crippled when crooked builders take the money and run.
Something broken lies in the system, and we intend to find it.
The film explores the emotional, spiritual, physical and tactical process families go through following a disaster, an institutions procedures in bringing cases to fruition, and the impact a seemingly prevalent natural disaster has on the community, mother nature and of course, the heart and soul.
We want to investigate the legal and natural processes that followed the wildfires of 2011, and answer those burning questions the folks of Bastrop County, Texas, are yearning for. Not to mention, provide answers for victims of future disasters.

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
Documentaries created independently face an uphill battle getting made and distributed. If we are able to raise the funds we need for this film, we hope to get creative with the content and how we bring it to audiences.
It's all or nothing! If we don't reach our project goal, we don't get to keep any of the funds we've raised. Anything extra will go back into the project, making the film better, and distributed to a wider audience.
Risks and challenges
There are many elements to consider with documentary filmmaking, which pose risks, including initial research and investigation, archival and original footage and interviews, storage for HOURS of footage, travel costs, music beds and licensing, and final polishing with color correction. Not to mention the many facets of distribution to a large audience, including festival fees, marketing, and of course, Kickstarter rewards!
Although this is our first feature-length documentary, we feel like this project has an excellent chance of going on screen to huge numbers of people - not only because of the mass network we are engaged with, but the sheer drive we have to get this story out into the world.
We are firm believers in the power of independent documentaries! We continue to raise amazing support as folks become more interested in being a part of the story. We feel like we are well on the way to making a great and historically relevant film.
We are eternally grateful for your help!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
